Objective To explore the pathogenesis and prognosis of acute renal insufficiency in children.Method The pathogensis, clinical manifestation, treatment and prognosis retrospected and discussed by analysis of the clinical features of 34 children with acute renal insufficiency hospitalized in 2002-2005.Results Of 34 children, there were 15 females and 19 males, the age range from 16 days to 15.5 years old.Among pathogenesis of acute renal insufficiency, primary glomerular diseases occupied 35.3% and drug-induced acute renal insufficiency occupied about 29.4%.The mortality of drug-induced acute renal insufficiency was 20% of and about 30%(deve-)loped chronic renal insufficiency was 30%.Conclusions Primary glomerular diseases rank the dominant causes of acute renal insufficiency, while drug-induced acute renal insufficiency has poor prognosis. So it is important to treat primary glomerular diseases in early stage and emphasize the side effect of drugs to kidney.

OBJECTIVETo study the epileptiform discharges and sleep structure in children with nocturnal epilepsy.
METHODSA total of 54 children with nocturnal epilepsy (NE group) between December 2009 and June 2011 were enrolled in this study using a cluster sampling method. Their epileptiform discharges and sleep structure were monitored using nocturnal 12 h-video-echoencephalography (EEG) and polysomnography. Meanwhile, 40 age- and gender-matched normal children were enrolled as the control group.
RESULTSAll the 54 children in the NE group suffered from epileptiform discharges and a varied number of clinical seizures, especially at S1 and S2 states. Compared with the control group, S1 and S2 states had significantly higher proportions in the NE group, and S3 and S4 states and REM state had significantly lower proportions (P<0.01).
CONCLUSIONSEpileptiform discharges and clinical seizures are more common in children with nocturnal epilepsy, especially during the non-rapid eye movement sleep. Meanwhile, remarkably disordered sleep structure also exists.

?AIM:To observe the values and changing rules of angle Kappa in corneal refractive surgery under light and dark conditions.?METHODS:Two hundred and thirty-four eyes of 118 patients for corneal refractive surgery were enrolled for this study.Pupil diameters and angle Kappa values under light and dark conditions were measured by Keratron Scout corneal topography.?RESULTS: There were significant differences in pupil diameters between light and dark conditions (P<0.01). More angle Kappa of both eyes distributed in the superior nasal quadrant under light conditions, and more angle Kappa distributed in the superior temporal quadrant under dark conditions. The differences of horizontal and vertical offsets of angle Kappa under two conditions were statistically significant (P<0.01).?CONCLUSION: The changes of pupil diameters in light and dark conditions could affect angle Kappa and then affect the accuracy of corneal refractive surgery centered on angle Kappa.

A multi-functional microfluidic chip with multi-orifice flow fractionation ( MOFF) and magnetic capture technique was developed to specifically separate and capture the HepG2 cells in artificial samples. The chip contained a glass substrate and a polydimethylsiloxane ( PDMS) microchannel cover plate. The PDMS cover plate consisted of 3 injection channels of 10-mm-long, a MOFF separation zone and a hexagonal cavity cell enrichment-detection zone. Among which, the MOFF separation zone had a total length of 20 mm and was consisted of 80 semi-rhombic shrinkage / expansion units with a length of 0. 18 mm, a depth of 50 μm, a shrinkage area width of 0. 06 mm, and an expansion area of 0. 20 mm. The angle between each group of shrinkage / expansion units was 103. 0°. In this experiment, HepG2-blood cell suspension was used as the sample. Based on the principle that the magnetic bead surface-modified c-Met antibody could specifically bind to HepG2 cells, an immunomagnetic bead ( Anti-MNCs) suspension at a concentration of 50 μg / mL was prepared by surface carboxylated beads, EDC (1 mg / mL), NHS (1 mg / mL) and c-Met antibody. Under the optimized flow rate (50 μL/ min), a few HepG2 in suspension samples were efficiently captured at the detection zone of chip via a magnetic field; the carbon quantum dots were prepared by microwave heating with citric acid and thiourea to label HepG2 cells which achieved in-situ fluorescence visualization of captured HepG2. Cells captured in the chip detection area were counted by microscope. The capture rate of HepG2 cells was 88. 5% ±6. 7% (106 blood cells and 10 HepG2 cells per 500 μL). The results demonstrated that the developed multifunctional microfluidic chip may serve as a promising tool for separation and capture of tumour cells.

Background:Epilepsy is a chronic disorder characterized by recurrent seizures and has significant psychological and social consequence for everyday living.Epilepsy affects various aspects of ones' social life. The present study aimed to investigate the influence of marital status on the quality of life of adult Chinese patients with epilepsy. Methods:This study surveyed 805 Chinese adults who have been clinically diagnosed with epilepsy for longer than 1 year in 11 hospitals in Beijing. In this survey,532 (66.1%) participants were married. All of them completed the case report form with enquiries on demographic data, social factors, and illness. The marriage status of adult epileptic quality of life was the dependent variable, and demographic data and clinical data were independent variables, analyzed through the multiple linear regression analysis methods. The patients' quality of life was assessed using the Quality of Life in patients with Epilepsy-31 items (QOLIE-31) questionnaire, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 items (PHQ-9),and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 items (GAD-7).Results:The PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores in the unmarried group (PHQ-9 =6.0 and GAD-7 =5.0) were significantly higher than that of the married group (PHQ-9 =4.0 and GAD-7 =3.0).The scores of married adult patients with epilepsy on QOLIE (61.8 ± 15.3) and social function (70.9 ± 22.7) were higher than the scores of the unmarried patients aged between 20 and 44 years. The scores of married adult epileptics on the QOLIE (58.4 ± 14.6) and the energy/fatigue (62.1 ± 20.4) were higher than the scores of the unmarried patients (QOLIE =58.4 ± 14.6 and the energy/fatigue =62.1 ± 20.4) aged between 45 and 59 years. For the adult epilepsy patients, depression, anxiety, seizures within the last year, disease course, medical expense category, and marriage* age are negatively correlated with the quality of life.Occupation, educational level, and average monthly income are closely related to the quality of life. Conclusions:Married adult epileptic patients have better quality of life than that of unmarried adult patients in young and middle-aged age groups.Unmarried adult patients with epilepsy are more anxious and depressed than married adult patients.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variations associated with longevity in Bama elderly population from Guangxi.
METHODSMitochondrial genome of 20 individuals over 96 years of age was sequenced, and seven target single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) were observed by comparing with the standard rCRS sequence, and two were tested by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method in a larger population including 208 individuals of 90-113 years old, and 586 unrelated control individuals from Guangxi.
RESULTSThe 4824G frequency of the mtDNA4824A/G locus increased with age both in the long-lived elderly and in controls. And it was significantly higher in controls than that in long-lived population (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe mtDNA4824 A/G is not only an age-related locus, its mutation is also negatively correlated with longevity.
