AIM: To study the effects of guava polysaccharides on blood glucose level and antioxidant activity in alloxan-induced diabetic mice. METHODS: The animal model of diabetes was established by injecting alloxan into mice abdominal cavity. The mice were divided into five groups: normal control group, diabetic model group, guava polysaccharides group I,guava polysaccharides group II,glybenclamide group.Blood glucose level was determined with blood glucose monitor 3 d and 10 d after being given polysaccharides. The mice were anaesthetized and killed on the tenth day.Activity of SOD and concentration of MDA in blood serum and liver were determined. RESULTS: Compared with diabetic model group, the blood glucose level of guava polysaccharides group I and guava polysaccharides group II significantly decreased.Activity of T-SOD in blood serum and liver significantly increased, while concentration of MDA in blood serum and liver significantly decreased. CONCLUSION: Guava polysaccharides can significantly decrease blood glucose level and improve the antioxidant activity of diabetic mice.lt is a potential hypoglycemic agent.

Journal of Xi'an Jiaotong University(Medical Sciences) 1982;0(01):-
Both molecular weight 6000 and 1000 polyethylene glycol (PEG) have been used to induce thc fusion of hepatoma cell by two methods of centrifugation and stillstand. The results showed that 50% PEG of molecular weight 1000 and centrifugation increase the percentage of fused cells. The procedure of cell fusion has been examined. The cytoplasm has been fused when the cells start fusing in one hour and a half, and the neucleus start fusing in two horus and a half.

Chinese Journal of Pathophysiology 2000;0(12):-
Traditional concept has been that hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) are tissue-specific stem cells, which are restricted to generate the cell types of the blood and immune system. However, recent studies have shown that there is a higher plasticity of the HSC than previous expected, it can be induced to transdifferentiated into mature cells of other nonhematopoietic organs after transplantation in vivo. In this article, the recent advances in the plasticity of HSC and its potential clinical application are reviewed.

AIM: To study the expression and change of growth hormone receptors in experimental cirrhotic liver in rats. METHODS: Thioacetamide-induced liver cirrhosis was developed in Sprague-Dawley rats. The expression of growth hormone receptor and its mRNA was investigated by radio-ligand binding assay, revere transcript-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and digital image analysis in liver tissue or hepatocytes taken from normal control or cirrhotic rats with different stages of cirrhosis. RESULTS: Growth hormone-specific singular binding sties, namely growth hormone receptors, were detected in liver tissue or hepatocytes from rat samples with cirrhosis. The binding capacity of growth hormone receptors in rat cirrhotic live tissue was significant lower than that in normal control, and it decreased gradually along with the accumulation of collagen in the process of formation and development of liver cirrhosis. The binding sites of growth hormone receptors in rat cirrhotic liver cells were significantly lower than that in normal control. The expression of growth hormone receptor mRNA in rat cirrhotic liver tissue was also significant lower than that in normal control. CONCLUSIONS: The growth hormone receptor was expressed in cirrhotic livers at a reduced level in isolated hepatocytes or live tissue of cirrhotic rats, and lesser expression of growth hormone receptors was found in later stage of cirrhosis. The suppressed expression of growth hormone receptor was partly due to the reduced expression of its mRNA in cirrhotic liver tissue.

50 mm/h were detected in all the patients. Decreasing C 3 in 6 patients and C 4 in 5 were found. Conclusions SLE is one of the general conditions causing retinal vein occlusion. Visual acuity and barrier of retinal vein and capillary are damaged seriously in patients with retinal vein occlusion caused by SLE, which may be accompanied with other ocular or general lesions. It is suggested that retinal vein occlusion is relative with SLE activity.

Chinese Journal of Ocular Fundus Diseases 2000;0(04):-
Objective To investigate the clinical characteristic of ocular fundus complications in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods In 25 cases of SLE with the ocular fundus complications, the ocular fundus, the other ocular tissues, general lesions, and antinuclear antibody (ANA), anti-double-stranded DNA(anti-dsDNA), complement 3 (C 3), complement 4 (C 4)and erythrocyte sedimentation rate(ESR) were analyzed retrospectively. Results In the 25 cases, "classic" SLE retinopathy in 15 (25 eyes), retinal vein occlusion (RVO) in 9 (12 eyes), RVO combined with retinal artery occlusion in 1 (2 eyes), exudative retinal detachment in 1 (2 eyes), vitreous hemorrhage combined with neovascular glaucoma in 1 (1 eye), and optic disc edema except RVO in 3 (6 eyes) were found. Nine cases accompanied with other ocular signs and 21 with general lesions. Positive ANA and anti-dsDNA and elevated ESR in all of the patients, decreasing C 3 in 19, and C 4 in 17 were found. Conclusions SLE can cause serious ocular fundus complications accompanied with other ocular signs. Regular ophthalmic examination should be performed on the patients with SLE to detect and treat the ocular complications promptly.
