This paper reports the nursing care of 12 patients with idiopathic scoliosis treated with halo-pelvic traction preoperatively which focused on breathing training, traction frame management. One patient suffered from temporary brachial plexus injury and four cases suffered from superior mesenteric artery syndrome. With 14-21 day's traction and nursing care, the correction rate of Cobb angle was 35%-50%,the forced vital capacity was improved by 25%,and all the patients received orthomorphia surgery in time. It is suggested that the patients with severe idiopathic scoliosis treated by halo-pelvic traction could take out-of-bed activity freely. It could not only relieve pain and reduce mental pressure, but also improve the safety of orthomorphia surgery.

Body iron store is one of the important aspects of the iron status in a population. According to the model established by Cook and Finch, the iron stores of 254 middle-aged Chinese women were estimated. The median of iron stores was calculated to be -282 mg with the 5th percentile of -630 mg and the 95th percentile of 32 mg respectively. The risk factors of iron deficiency in these middle-aged women were menorrhagia (RR 4.55), application of intrauterine device (RR 1.88), history of blood loss (RR 1.65), and chronic gastrointestinal diseases (RR 0.84). The key point of the application of the Cook's model was discussed.

The presence of insufficient bone volume affects the implant healing and success. The aim of this study was to evaluate osteogenic capacity of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) on micro-arc oxidation (MAO) titanium surface. DPSCs were challenged at MAO and smooth titanium surface separately for different durations, and the bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) served as the positive controls. The osteogenic capacity of DPSCs on MAO titanium surface was assessed by using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, biochemical tests and real-time quantitative PCR. Data showed that DPSCs differentiated into osteoblasts and expressed bone morphogenetic genes on MAO titanium surface. The results of this study revealed that DPSCs had good potential to generate mineralized tissue on MAO titanium plates. The differential potential of DPSCs may be regulated by MAO titanium surface. The osteogenesis potential of DPSCs on the MAO titanium was similar with BMSCs.

To evaluate the neuroprotective effect of nerve growth factor ( NGF ) on acute angle-closure glaucoma patients after trabeculetomy.METHODS: Patients with viral keratitis who underwent trabeculectomy in treatment of acute angle - closure glaucoma in Xiamen Eye Center of Xiamen University from December 2011 to October 2013 were selected and completed the treatment, 61 eyes of 45 cases were followed up. The treatment group of 23 cases (32 eyes) with acute angle-closure glaucoma patients were treated by NGF gel for 3mo after trabeculetomy, while in the control group 22 cases (29 eyes) were treated by normal saline replaced NGF. All patients were followed up for at least 12mo, visual acuity, perimetry, retinal nerve fiber layer ( RNFL) thickness and cup/disc ratio of the patients were followed up during the treatment. The safety of topical use of NGF gel was also evaluated.RESULTS:ln all patients, the intraocular pressure ( lOP) was successfully controlled under 21mmHg and the visual acuity was markedly increased in the affected eye after trabeculectomy. Compared with control group, the postoperative lOP and visual acuity had no significant differences in treatment group (P>0. 05). The average light sensitivity of perimetry and mean defect were better than that in control group postoperative 6 and 12mo; The results of optical coherent tomography ( OCT ) and Heiderburg Retina Tomography ( HRT )-Ⅲ showed that RNFL thickness was significantly greater than that in control group, while cup/disc ratio significantly less than that in control group postoperative 6 and 12mo. Ocular surface damage, corneal endothelium to reduce and other eye complication were no observed in treatment group.CONCLUSlON:Acute angle-closure glaucoma treated by NGF gel after operation is effective and safe.

BACKGROUND: A large amount of in vivo and in vitro experiments have confirmed that, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) has been widely utilized in various tissues and cells, it can facilitate the wound healing.OBJECTIVE: To observe the efficacy and feasibility of gene gun-mediate delivery of human bFGF on the healing of deep partial thickness bum wounds.DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: Randomized design,an observational trial was performed at the Military Central Laboratory of Changhai Hospital in the Second Military Medical University of Chinese PLA between December 2007 and October 2008.MATERIALS: SD rats of clean grade, weighing 200-250 g, irrespective of genders, ware involved in this study.METHODS: Natural human bFGF gene was recombined and optimized, then eukaryotic expression vector pCI-neo-bFGF was constructed taking pCI-neo as a vector, and transfeoted with human embryonic kidney cells 293 T cells. Dot blot and Western blot methods were utilized to determine the bFGF expression. Rat model of deep partial thickness burn wounds was processed into transgene process using gene gun technique, pCI-neo-bFGF-transfected ones served as experiment group while pCI-neo-transfected ones served as controls.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Wound healing time was recorded and the efficacy was evaluated. The contents of hydroxyproline and collaganase Ⅰ in burn wound tissues were determined at 24 hours, 48 hours, 96 hours, 7 days, 10 days and 14 days following transgene process.RESULTS: the recombinant pCI-neo-bFGF was transfected with human embryonic kidney 293T cells. Dot blot and Western blot analysis have showed that, the constructed pCI-neo-bFGF expression vector could express human bFGF, and the expression of synthesized gene was remarkably higher than that of natural gene under fluorescence microscope; gene gun-mediated transgene experiment have showed that, the wound healing time was (13.00+1.31) days in the experiment group and (14.75±1.28) days in the control group, with significant differences (P<0.05). The contents of hydroxyproline and collagenase Ⅰ reached a peak at 5 days after the injury, that is 48 hours after transfection, and then gradually decreased and maintained at a certain level. The experiment group had higher hydroxyproline levels compared with control group at different time points (P<0.05, P<0.01); the collagenase Ⅰ in the experiment group was notably higher than that in the control group at 48 hours and 96 hours after transfection (P<0.01).CONCLUSION: Gene gun-mediated delivery of human bFGF can short the time of wound healing, increase the contents of hydroxyproline and collagenase Ⅰ during the healing period, accelerate the healing of deep partial thickness burn wounds.

Objective To investigate the neural circuit of inhibitory control in late-onset depressed patients(LOD) by functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI). Methods Fourteen late-onset depressed patients (LOD group) and thirteen elderly healthy subjects( control group) were recruited. The two groups were age, gender, and education matched. All the subjects performed a visual Go/Nogo task during the fMRI scan. Erect or inverted isosceles triangular figures were used for stimuli. The two groups were instructed to press a button as quickly and correctly as possible when the erect triangular figures(Go) were presented, but not to response when the inverted triangular figures(Nogo) were presented. The differences of brain activation between the two groups were compared. Results ( 1 ) During Go trials, there were no significant differences in reaction time and hit rate between the two groups (P > 0.05 ). During Nogo trials, however, the late-onset depressed patients showed much higher false alarm rate(0.09 ±0.06) compared with control group(0.04 ±0.02) (P<0.05=. (2) During Go trials , LOD group showed significantly greater activity in left postcentral gyrus, left inferior parietal lobule, right precentral gyrus, left paracentral lobule, right inferior parietal lobule, right anterior cingulate cortex, left middle frontal gyrus, right middle frontal gyrus, right superior frontal gyrus compared with the control group. Whereas during Nogo trials, LOD group exhibited greater activity in left inferior parietal lobule and left middle frontal gyrus compared with the control group. Conclusion This study suggests that inhibitory control dysfunction in late-onset depressed patients may be closely related to frontostriatal circuit impairment. Over activation in left middle frontal gyrus, right middle frontal gyrus and right anterior cingulate cortex may contribute to the pathogenesis of late-onset depression.
