International Eye Science 2007;7(4):921-924
· AIM: To compare the measurement of anterior chamber depth (ACD) and axial length (AL) by IOLMaster and contact ultrasonic (US) axial scan (A-scan).· METHODS: Measurements of ACD and AL were prospectively obtained in 137 eyes of 121 subjects with the IOLMaster compared with measurements with the US.· RESULTS: There was an excellent correlation between IOLMaster and US measurements for the ACD (r=0.823;P<0.001) and AL (r=0.996;P<0.001). The mean values of the parameters measured by IOLMaster and US were, respectively, as follows: ACD, 2.94±0.49mm, 2.58±0.51mm;AL, 24.37±3.04mm, 23.81±2.83mm. The mean differences of ACD and AL values between IOLMaster and US measurements were 0.36 ±0.30mm, 0.56 ±0.34 mm respectively, and they proved to be statistically significant (P<0.001), With the 95%limits of agreement (LoA) from -0.08mm to +0.38mm for ACD and from -0.09mm to +0.69mm for AL.· CONCLUSION: As noncontact biometry, IOLMaster provides accurate values. A high degree of agreement between US and IOLMaster was noted. It not only has the advantage of performing noncontact examinations, but also produces various additional data simultaneously and may thus obviate the need for multiple examinations. Further studies are needed to assess the interchangeability of measurements in clinical practice.

Objective To study predicting results of the back propagation (BP)neural network model for hematoma enlargement (HE)in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage. Methods The clinical data of 128 patients with cerebral hemorrhage admitted to the 309th hospital of People′s Liberation Army from January 2011 to December 2014 were analyzed retrospectively. The Matlab 7. 14 software was used to achieve BP neural network model for predicting hematoma enlargement within 24 hours in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (HE ≥6. 0 ml and HE ≥12. 5 ml). The mean square error (MSE)of the model and the accuracy of the overall prediction were calculated. The receiver operation characteristic (ROC) curve was drawn for predicting HE. Results When the BP neural network predicted HE ≥6. 0 ml and HE ≥12. 5 ml,the mean square deviations of the training set, validation set,and test set were 0. 061, 0. 143,0. 052 and 0. 023,0. 057,and 0. 065,respectively. The best fitting performance verification of hematoma enlargement was as follows:≥ 6. 0 ml for network training 11 times and the error value 0. 224;≥12. 5 ml for network training 20 times, and the error value 0. 057. The overall accuracies of predicting HE ≥6. 0 ml and HE ≥12. 5 ml were 92. 2% (118/ 128)and 96. 9% (124/ 128)respectively. Conclusion The BP neural network model have no special limitation for data. It can accurately fit the hematoma expansion model of cerebral hemorrhage.

Objective To analyse the diagnosis and treatment of testicular torsion. Methods The clinical data of 66 cases of testicular torsion were retrospectively analysed. Results Among the 66 cases,32(48.5%) paid the first medical visit within 10 h,and 24(36.4%)were confirmed diagnosis at the first visit.False negative results occurred with color Doppler flow imaging(CDFI),and 8 testicles were damaged due to the false negative diagnosis.Thirty-three patients without prophylactic contralateral orchidopexy were followed up for 6 months to 20 years, and one experienced recurrent torsion. Conclusion The testicular torsion must be considered when a sudden acute scrotum pain is occurred.Testicular damage is closely related to the torsion time, and delayed medical intervention contributes to the testicular damage.Highly suspected cases should be performed surgical exploration timely due to the false negative results with CDFI.Prophylactic contralateral orchidopexy is recommended.

Objective To study the main features of mechanical asphyxia——the pathological characteristics of petechial hemorrhage after high temperature effect (roasted, boiled) and its changing rules. Methods Rabbit model of mechanical asphyxia death with choking neck and death from anteposition hanging was established. The experimental rabbits were randomly divided into roasted group and boiled group (n=4, in each group). The laryngeal ventricles and cardiopulmonary tissues in the roasted group were roasted for 3, 6 and 10 min, and the positions of petechial hemorrhage were observed and photographed. The same organs and tissues in the boiled group were heated in boiling water (100℃), and were observed and photographed at 30 and 60 s.Then histopathological examination was performed on all the laryngeal ventricles and cardiopulmonary tissues. Results The petechial hemorrhage originating from laryngeal ventricle, trachea and lung did not disappear after high temperature treatment in the eight rabbits. The deepened color was visible to naked eyes and distinct from the surrounding normal tissues, with bleeding under the microscope. Conclusion Petechial hemorrhage caused by mechanical asphyxia would not disappear under high temperature, which might be related to the manner of death, the intensity and time of action, and the individual differences.

OBJECTIVETo compare the color differences of different metal bases and different opaque thickness, and evaluate the best thickness of opaque on different metal bases.
METHODSPrecious metal, gold sediment and Ni-Cr plates were prepared as bases, then opaque samples of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 mm thickness were fabricated on such plates. Minolta chromatics meter CR-321 was used to examine the color properties of these samples, and deltaE was calculated to evaluate the color difference of the specimens.
RESULTSFor the restoration based on Ni-Cr and precious alloys, the color of restorations was not affected by the color of metal bases as the thickness of opaque reached 0.3 mm, and the chromatic value deltaE < 1.5 NBS. For the restoration based on gold sediment, the color of restoration was not affected by the color of metal as the thickness of opaque reached 0.1 mm, and the chromatic value deltaE < 1.5 NBS.
CONCLUSIONDifferent opaque thickness was necessary to obtain ideal color appearance in clinic. As the opaque thickness increased, the color of restoration based on Ni-Cr and noble metal increased but the color of restoration based on gold sediment decreased.

Journal of Southern Medical University 2011;31(7):1220-1223
OBJECTIVETo assess the diagnostic value of 8 equations using different variables for determining the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in patients with cardiovascular diseases.
METHODSGFR was estimated in 208 patients with cardiovascular diseases by (99m)Tc-DTPA dynamic renal imaging, and the eGFR was derived from 8 equations using different variables.
RESULTSIn patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages 1-3, the eGFR calculated suing serum creatinine (SCr)-based equation was better correlated to GFR estimated by (99m)Tc-DTPA renal imaging than that derived from cystatin C (Cys C)-based equations, whereas in patients with CKD stages 4 and 5, the estimates by the latter equation showed a better correlation to GFR. Compared with (99m)Tc-DTPA renal imaging, MDRD-based equation and simple MDRD equation resulted in a higher eGFR in patients with CKD stages 4 and 5, the Rule equation had a lower eGFR in CKD stages 1 and 2, the Macisaac equation yielded a higher eGFR in CKD stages 2-5, and the Tan equation showed a higher eGFR in CKD stages 2 and 3. In patients with mild renal dysfunction, the Scr-based equation had a higher AUC(ROC) than Cys C-based equation, which was reversed in patients with severe renal dysfunction; the AUC(ROC) of the two equations were comparable in patients with moderate renal dysfunction. Compared with (99m)Tc-DTPA renal imaging, the modified MDRD equation and Arnal-Dade equation showed no significant difference in the eGFR in patients with CKD stages 1-5.
CONCLUSIONModified MDRD equation (or simple MDRD equation) and Arnal-Dade equation are superior to other calculation methods for estimating the GFR in Chinese patients with cardiovascular disease.

OBJECTIVETo observe the dynamic expression of calcium-sensing receptor(CaSR) in myocardium of diabetic rats.
METHODSThirty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 3 groups including control, diabetic-4 week and diabetic-8 week groups(n = 10). The type 2 diabetes mellitus models were established by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ, 30 mg/kg) after high-fat and high-sugar diet for one month. The cardiac morphology was observed by electron microscope. Western blot analyzed the expression of CaSR, phospholamban (PLN), a calcium handling regulator, and Ca+-ATPase(SERCA) in cardiac tissues.
RESULTSCompared with control group, the expressions of CaSR and SERCA were decreased, while the expression of PLN was significantly increased in a time-dependent manner in diabetic groups. Meanwhile diabetic rats displayed abnormal cardiac structure.
CONCLUSIONThese results indicate that the CaSR expression of myocardium is reduced in the progression of DCM, and its potential mechanism may be related to the imnaired intracellular calcium homeostasis.

OBJECTIVEThe goals of this work was to analyse the cost of Shenqi Fuzheng injection-an extraction of a Chinese traditional herbs on reducing adverse effects in lung cancer patients during chemotherapy.
METHODSIn a randomized cross-over trial, each patient completed two identical cisplatin-based chemotherapy cycles, one with Shenqi Fuzheng injection, another without Shenqi Fuzheng injection. Adverse effects and change scores of quality of life (QOL) during chemotherapy were compared in tow cycles. The direct cost dealing with adverse effect and cost-effectiveness analysis were taken.
RESULTSOne hundred and thirty were enrolled with 123 of whom were evaluable. The patient characteristics were well balanced between the two groups. The chemotherapy cycles with Shenqi Fuzheng injection spent 220.5 more Chinese yuan, but the adverse effect of leukopenia, thrombocytopenia and vomiting were slight different and the change of score of several QOL domains showed significant better as compared to those in another cycle.
CONCLUSIONShenqi Fuzheng injection could reduce the severity of toxicity related to chemotherapy and improve the QOL of patients and had some benefits in terms of cost-effectiveness.
