Objective To explore the effect of low constant direct current (LCDC) in the medullary cavity on repairing of rabbit radial defect as to evaluate its clinical value. Methods DBX was put into the segmental osteoperiosteum defect of rabbit bilateral radius. The rabbits were divided into 2 groups: group A (subject group) with the defects stimulated by LCDC and group B (control group) with the defects left untreated. In week 2,5 and 9, 4 animals from each group were put into death, and the radius was taken for study using photograph, electron microscope, histological & morphologic technique, and the contents of the Calcium (Ca) and ALP were determined. Purpose To explore the significance of three-dimensional reconstruction of fetus based on MRI scan data. Materials and Methods Three woman (more than 39 weeks' gestation) with a strong wish to have natural childbirth and voluntary to take the examination in Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University were recruited in the study. Mimics 10.01 software was used to do three-dimensional reconstruction. Results The fetal surface tissue showed low signal on the two-dimensional images, and amniotic fluid and lung, bladder, cerebrospinal fluid showed high signal. The placenta and uterine wall showed moderate to low signal. Those contributed to the clear boundary between fetal surface and other tissue surround. The three-dimensional fetus models were reconstructed successfully, which clearly demonstrated the main surface features and spatial position of the fetus. The fetal morphology and fetal position could be viewed in various directions. Conclusion Fetus surface can be reconstructed into three-dimensional model based on MRI data set, which has advantage of large visual field and can be observed at arbitrary angle. It provides a new method for morphological analysis and prenatal evaluation for fetal development and growth.

Objective To investigate the operative indication,timing,method,selective standards of fetieided fetus and the number of reduced fetuses of selective multifetal pregnancy reduction in second trimester,and the pregnancy outcome of multifetal pregnancy by this operation.Methods Trans-abdominal selective multifetal pregnancy reductions in 37 cases of multiple pregnancy (twins 6 cases,triplets 21cases, quadruplets 8 cases,and quintuplets 2 cases) during 12~(+1) -25 weeks were performed under ultrasound guidance.The fetus to be reduced was injected potassium chloride (KC1) intraeardiacally until the fetal heartbeat stopped gradually.Totally 46 fetuses were reduced.Periodic prenatal examination and monitoring of coagulation function were carried out after the procedure.The pregnancy complications and pregnancy outcome of all cases were recorded.Results (1) The successful ratio of reduction was 100% (46/46 fetuses) and the successful pregnancy ratio was 88.9% (24/27).(2) Among all the 37 cases,fifteen deliveried after 36 weeks,seven deliveried in 32-36 weeks,three deliveried in 28-32 weeks,two aborted after feticide,and ten cases were in pregnancy at the time of this study.The mean gestational age of all was (34.9?4.1) weeks,and the delivery ratio after 28 weeks was 92.6% (25/27).(3) The mean birth weight of singletons was (3014?640) g,and of twins was (2557?573) g.The neonates of three triplets all died except for in one case two fetuses were alive.(4) Except in two cases after reducing one fetus of monoamniotie twins,another one died within 24 hours,the remaining fetuses were all alive.(5) Pre- eclampsia occurred in three cases.None of the cases had blood coagulation disturbances.Conclusion (1) Selective muhifetal pregnancy reduction in second trimester can feticide the abnormal fetus objectively or reduce the fetal number effectively.It is a safe procedure to decrease the complications of multifetal pregnancy and increase the birth weight.(2) ff the intention is reducing the fetal number,we choose the fetus who lies in the fundus uteri and reduce the muhifetal pregnancy to twins.(3) It is advised to aviod performing the procedure during vaginal bleeding.We reduce fetus after vaginal bleeding stops for one or more weeks.(4) Selective second-trimester multifetal pregnancy reduction will not result in the disturbance of blood coagulation and the death of remaining fetus.The incidence of pre-eclampsia is decreased after muhifetal pregnancy reduction.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effects of maternal nutritional manipulation on fetal mRNA abundance of uncoupling protein UCP2, UCP3 and carnitine palmityl transferase 1 (CPT1), and find out an optimal maternal diet and targets for pharmacological prevention and treatment of obesity.

METHODSWistar pregnant rats were assigned to two groups which received a standard diet (SD) and a high protein diet (HPD) during pregnancy, respectively. After delivery, the male offspring were assigned to control group (CON) and high protein group (HP) according to their maternal diet, which were suckled by dams that received SD during pregnancy. Offspring were fed with SD from weaning (week 3) to week 8. Then CON were allocated to two groups: CON (SD during the whole experiment); HFCON (high fat control). HFCON and HP group rats were fed with high-fat diet (HFD) for 6 wk to induce obesity. At 0, 3, 8 and 14 wk of age, blood and tissue were collected for analyzing blood fat and abundance of UCP2, 3 and CPT1 mRNA.

RESULTSIn HP body weight and TG were decreased after weaning (F = 4.589, P = 0.039; F = 27.001, P = 0.000) and HFD (F = 16.076, P = 0.00; F = 71.518, P = 0.000). Obesity rates were significantly decreased in HP after HFD (chi2 = 8.076, P = 0.004). The abundance of UCP3 and CPT1 mRNA was persistently higher in HP than in CON or HFCON, and the abundance of UCP2 mRNA was also persistently higher than in CON or HFCON after weaning. Moreover the abundance of CPT1 mRNA was significantly increased after weaning and HFD compared with that after SD, the abundance of UCP2, UCP3 mRNA was also increased after HFD compared with that after SD.

CONCLUSIONSIncreasing protein intake during pregnancy might prevent offspring from HFD-induced obesity in adult, moreover might increase offspring the expression of UCP2, UCP3 and CPT1 mRNA. UCP2, UCP3 and CPT1 might participate in prevention and treatment of obesity by mediating fatty acid oxidation.

OBJECTIVETo understand the prognosis of the children with urinary calculi associated with exposure to melamine-contaminated formula.

METHODSA follow-up study was performed in 47 out-patients from the Third Hospital of Peking University who were diagnosed with urinary calculi associated with exposure to melamine-contaminated formula. Urinary tract B-ultrasound and renal function examinations were done during the 1 to 6-month follow-up.

RESULTSBy the 6th month of follow-up, spontaneous stone passage was found in 36 children (77%). The follow-up failed in four children. None of the patients had any complications. Spontaneous stone passage was not associated with the volume and the period exposed to melamine in formula, but was associated with the location of calculi. The time to spontaneous stone passage in boys appeared to be longer than in girls, but there were no statistical differences.

CONCLUSIONSSpontaneous stone passage can be found in most children and the prognosis of children with urinary calculi associated with exposure to melamine-contaminated formula is good.

OBJECTIVETo summarize the clinical pathological characteristics and treatment patterns of breast cancer in elderly women.

METHODSA total of 87 patients (≥ 60 years) admitted to our hospital between January and December 2007 were included in this retrospective study. The patients were divided into 60-69-year group and ≥ 70-year group, and their clinical pathological data and treatment modes were summarized and compared.

RESULTSThe tumor size (T2-T3), number of involved axillary lymph nodes,and positive rates of estrogen/progesterone receptors,over-expression of epidermal growth factor receptor 2, and ≥ 2 complication were not significantly different between two groups (P > 0.05). The ≥ 70-year group tended to have similar p53 gene mutation and Ki-67 labeling index with the 60-69-year group, although the P values were close to 0.05 (P = 0.09, P = 0.08,respectively). In the ≥ 70-year group, 33.3% of patients underwent extended resection,while in the 60-69-year group, all patients received modified radical treatment (P < 0.005). The percentages of adjuvant chemotherapy were 25% and 56.9% in the ≥ 70-year group and the 60-69-year group (0.005). The percentages of adjuvant endocrine therapy applied after surgery were similar in 2 groups (77.8% and 68.6% separately, P=0.347). Binary logistic regression showed that age,number of involved axillary lymph nodes,and estrogen receptor-positive rate were independently associated with adjuvant chemotherapy,while the pathological tumor size and complication were irrelevant. The 2-year disease-free survival rates of 2 groups were not significantly different.

CONCLUSIONSThe clinical pathological characteristics of breast cancer were similar in elderly patients who are 60-69 years old or ≥ 70 years. In the treatment pattern,patients who are ≥ 70 years tend to receive endocrine therapy rather than adjuvant chemotherapy.

A female infant was admitted to the hospital due to perioral cyanosis two hours after birth. The infant was born at the gestational age of 35 weeks by cesarean section with a birth weight of 2 400 g. Physical examination revealed wry mouth to the left side while crying, small auricles, and high palatal arch; fibrolaryngoscopy suggested bilateral vocal cord paralysis; echocardiography suggested ventricular septal defect; single nucleotide polymorphism testing showed 22q11.21 microdeletion. Therefore, the infant was given a definite diagnosis of asymmetric crying facies syndrome accompanied by 22q11.21 microdeletion. After 8-month follow-up, the infant still had asymmetric crying facies with presence of growth retardation.
