OBJECTIVETo determine the plasma DNA level and investigate its clinicopathological significance in women with cervical cancers.
METHODSBlood samples were collected from 42 cervical cancer patients, 20 patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade III (CINIII) and 20 healthy women. The plasma DNA was extracted using a commercial kit and detected by a fluorescentmeter.
RESULTSThe mean plasma DNA level in stage I cervical cancer patients was 12.78-/+5.58 ng/ml, significantly higher than that in CINIII patients (8.10-/+3.06 ng/ml) and normal controls (7.60-/+3.87 ng/ml) (P=0.001). The mean DNA level in stage II-III patients was 17.99-/+7.81 ng/ml, significantly higher than that in stage I patients (P=0.02). No significant difference was found in plasma DNA level between CINIII patients and the normal controls (P>0.05). When the cut-off for diagnosis of cervical cancer was 15.70 ng/ml, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value were 38.10%, 92.50%, 84.21% and 58.73%, respectively.
CONCLUSIONPlasma DNA level is closely related with malignant transformation and development of cervical cancer, and may become a useful means for differential diagnosis of cervical cancer.

Diabetes has become the third largest killer to human life and health, and its development is closely related to the intestinal flora imbalance caused by series of consequences. So adjusting the structure of intestinal flora becomes a new idea for the treatment of diabetes.Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has good curative effect in prevention and treatment of diabetes, and improvement on the structure of intestinal flora may be one of its important mechanisms. The article reviewed the research progress on prevention and treatment of diabetes by TCM single components (berberine, phloridzin, rheinic acid, etc),TCM single prescription (essential oil from Cinnamomum cassia, flower stalk of Coptis chinensis, total coumarin of Feucedani Radix) and TCM priscriptions (Gegen Qinlian Decoction,Shengjiang Powder,Buzhong Yiqi Decoction,Huanglian Jiedu Decoction,Wenyang Yiqi Huoxue Compound, etc.) based on new targets in intestinal flora,so as to provide reference for the development of TCM for prevention and treatment of diabetes.

OBJECTIVETo study the clinical characteristics, diagnosis and surgical effects of thyroid-stimulating hormone pituitary adenomas (TSH-omas).
METHODSThe clinical data of 19 patients (14 female and 5 male) with TSH-omas were analyzed retrospectively in this study from January 2001 to December 2008. The patients ranged from 20 to 70 years old (average 40.5 years old) and had disease histories from 1 to 228 months (average 55 months). Among these patients, 15 of them complained of thyrotoxicosis symptoms, while the other 4 patients' symptoms were associated with headache and/or visual disturbance caused by the tumor mass effect. Initially, 12 of the 15 patients with thyrotoxicosis symptoms were misdiagnosed with Grave's disease. As a result 2 of them received (131) Iodine, and one received subtotal thyroidectomy. All of these patients underwent transsphenoidal microsurgery.
RESULTSAverage follow-up period was 3.6 years (6 months-7 years). Pathological analysis of the surgical specimen showed pituitary adenoma in all patients, immunohistochemistry were positive for TSH in 17 cases, negative for TSH in 2, positive for growth hormone in 2, positive for prolactin in 1, and positive for adrenocorticotrophic hormone in 1. Postoperative MRI revealed that the tumors in 15 patients were removed totally, though 4 patients still had residual tumors. The thyroid hormone level tests suggested that 13 patients could be considered normal 3 months after their tumors were removed, though 2 of patients with normal postoperative MRI and thyroid hormones showed increased levels of TSH. For these 2 patients, tumors did not recur and their thyroid hormone levels returned to normal after pituitary radiotherapy. The cure rate was 11/19 after surgery and 13/19 after surgery plus pituitary radiotherapy.
CONCLUSIONSThe screening test for hyperthyroidism patients with high TSH levels is a key point to improve the accuracy rate in early diagnoses of TSH-omas. The transsphenoidal microsurgery is first choice to treat TSH-omas, while pituitary radiotherapy and somatostatin analogs are beneficially adjunctive therapies.

OBJECTIVETo study the best style of operation in the treatment of tumor invades adjacent structures (T(4)) cancer of the cardia and stomach fundus.
METHODSTwo hundred and one patients with T(4) cancer of the cardia and stomach fundus underwent operation. Of them, 31 were treated by laparotomy, and 170 by combined resection of the involved organs. The 3- and 5-year survival rates and the postoperative complication rate and mortality rate were analyzed in the patients who had under gone combined resection of the involved organs.
RESULTSThe median survival of the patients undergoing combined resection of the involved organs (29.3 months) was significantly longer than that of those receiving laparotomy (4.9 months). The 3- and 5-year survival rates of 170 patients who had under gone combined resection of the involved organs were 46.2% and 22.8%, respectively. The 3- and 5-year survival rates of patients undergoing total gastrectomy and proximal gastrectomy were 54.9% and 29.2% and 32.2% and 12.5%, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (chi(2) = 7.589, P < 0.01;chi(2) = 5.792, P < 0.05).The postoperative mortality rate and complication rate were 4.1% and 24.1%, respectively.
CONCLUSIONSThe patients without liver metastasis, widespread nodal involvement, peritoneal dissemination and local focus allowed by an en bloc combined resection in T(4) cancer of cardia and stomach fundus should undergo gastrectomy with a combined resection of the involved organs. Total gastrectomy should be performed to improve the curative effect.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the value of Compound Xuanju Capsule in the treatment of type-III prostatitis-related sexual dysfunction.
METHODSWe randomly divided 90 type-III prostatitis patients with sexual dysfunction diagnosed by NIH clinical criteria into an experiment group and a control group to be treated with Compound Xuanju Capsule and antibiotics, respectively. We analyzed the therapeutic results based on the scores on chronic prostatitis symptom index (CPSI), prostatitis-related sexual function index (PSFI ) and self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), and compared them between the two groups and with the baseline data.
RESULTSThe degree of prostatitis-related sexual dysfunction was not correlated with that of prostatitis symptoms. Prostatitis symptoms and sexual function were significantly improved in the experiment group than in the control (P < 0.05), and the SAS score was markedly lower in the former than in the latter (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONCompound Xuanju Capsule can not only alleviate the symptoms of type-III prostatitis, but also improve its related sexual dysfunction and anxiety.

This study was purposed to investigate the inhibitory effect, apoptosis, Bcl-2 and P-gp expression of K562/AO2 cells by hyperthermia combined with adriamycin. The working concentration of adriamycin against K562/AO2 was determined by MTT assay. The hyperthermia and chemotherapy were used alone or in combination, then the cell survival rate was detected at 48 hours. The inhibitory effect was evaluated by MTT assay. The apoptosis rate, Bcl-2 and P-gp expression of K562/AO2 were determined by flow cytometry. The concentration of adriamycin in the experiment was defined as its IC(50) at 48 hours action. The results indicated that the hyperthermia at 40, 41 and 42 degrees C for 60 minutes showed obvious inhibitory effect on K562/AO2 cells (p < 0.01). Adriamycin chemotherapy combined with hyperthermia showed more obvious inhibitory effect on K562/AO2. According to flow cytometric analysis, the hyperthermia and adriamycin used alone or in combination could obviously increase the apoptosis rate and down-regulate Bcl-2 and P-gp expression of K562/AO2 cells (p < 0.01). It is concluded that the adriamycin chemotherapy combined with hyperthermia for 60 minutes shows obvious inhibitory effect on K562/AO2 cells, which increases the apoptosis rate and down-regulates expression of Bcl-2 and P-gp.
