BACKGROUND: Focal ischemic model made by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) is much similar to the process of onset in human cere bral infarction, whereas in the process of modeling some problems such as selection of nylon strand with improper diameter and inserted depth would result in modeling failure. OBJECTIVE: To improve MCAO model of focal cerebral infarction. DESIGN: Single-factor design, animal experiment. SETTING: Department of Pediatrics, Affiliated Maternal and Children's Hospital of Guangzhou Medical College. MATERIALS: The experiment was conducted in the Experimental Center of Guangdong Province from January. 2002 to March 2004. A total of 24 healthy Wistar rats were randomly divided into sham-operation group and model group with 10 rats in each group.METHODS: In rats of the model group, the common carotid artery (CCA) and external carotid artery (ECA) were isolated and ligated. A strand was inserted via the incision on CCA near the furcation between CCA and ECA as deep as possible with the depth of (2.0±0.2) mm. The diameter of nylon strand was 0.2 mm, the top of nylon strand was treated by melting paraffin. The interrupted time of blood circulation was 3 hours. Rats in the sham-operation group were treated by slightly drawing back the nylon strand to the CCA immediately after inserting.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: ①Neurobehavioral rating: It was conducted at 3 and 12 hours after ischemia with the score ranged 0-4 points.The higher the score was, the severer the neural functional deficit was, 1-3 points signified successful modeling. ②Area of cerebral infarction: Rats wereexecuted at 12 hours after ischemia. Then, brains were quickly removed and stained with tetrazolium chloride (TTC). The percentage of cerebral infarction area was calculated. ③Observation on pathological changes under light microscope.RESULTS: All of 20 rats entered the final analysis.①Eight out of 10 rats in the model group represented contra lateral tumble or draw outward circles, positive Homer's syndrome can be seen in the ligated side (3 points);One rat was disable to completely extend the claws in the contra lateral side of ligation (1 point), one rat had no neural symptoms.②Some pathological changes can be seen in the model group such as swelled cerebral tissues in the ligated side, which were bigger than the contra lateral side and were in pale; The cortex, basal ganglia and thalamus in the ligated side after TTC staining were in pale, whereas the cerebral tissues in the sham-operation group were in red with clear border.③There was no infarct in the sham-operation group, and the percentage of cerebral infarction area in the model group was (22.40±4.52)%, the infarct area of rats in groups were fundamentally same.CONCLUSION: It is necessary to adapt the strand with appropriate diameter, inserted depth and interrupting time for successful modeling.

Objective To observe the change of gastro-intestinal hormone levels about syndrome type of stagnation of liver qi, deficiency of spleen and stomach, liver qi stagnation and spleen qi deficiency in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and to probe into the correlation between TCM syndrome type and gastro-intestinal hormone levels. Methods One hundred and three cases of patients with IBS were divided into liver qi stagnation group (35 cases), spleen and stomach deficiency group (30 cases) and liver qi stagnation and spleen qi deficiency group (38 cases), with normal group (10 cases) as control. Objective To discuss the safety of percutaneous puncture drainage for liver abscess in patients with blood coagulation dysfunction. Methods A total of 85 patients with liver abscess, who were admitted to authors’ hospital during the period from January 2013 to January 2014 to receive ultrasound-guided percutaneous puncture drainage, were included in this study. According to the international normalized ratio of prothrombin time≥1.5 and platelet count≤50 ×109/L, the patients were divided into group A (normal coagulation group,n=67) and group B (coagulation dysfunction group,n=18). The occurrence of postoperative complications was recorded and the results were compared between the two groups. Results In both groups, no statistically significant difference in hemoglobin level existed between preoperative level and postoperative one, and no bleeding complications occurred in all patients after the procedure. Conclusion For patients with liver abscess complicated by blood coagulation dysfunction, percutaneous puncture drainage treatment is safe and reliable.

Objective To investigate the relationship between osteopontin and urolithiasis. Methods Concentrations of urinary osteopontin and crystal components were determined. Results Relative concentrations of urinary osteopontin in normal, pre and postoperative stone former group were 29.30 ,26.17 and 10.84 respectively. Objective To investigate the relationship between urolithiasis and vitamin D 3 as well as vitamin K 3. Methods 36 adult male SD rats were randomized to control group、stone forming group、vitamin D 3 group、vitamin D 3+stone forming group、vitamin K 3 group and vitamin K+stone forming group.OPN and its mRNA of kidneys were detected,and the crystal components in urine were determined. Results Vitamin D 3 and vitamin K 3 could enhance the expression of OPN mRNA in rat kidneys of stone models.Vitamin D 3 could increase the concentration of calcium in urine significantly.Vitamin K 3 could inhibit the excretion of oxalate in urine and also inhibits the deposition of oxalate crystals in kidney. Conclusions The results indicated that vitamin D 3 may promote stone formation via various mechanisms,whereas vitamin K 3 could inhibit this process.

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a newly recognized disease entity. IgG4-RD is characterized by a single or multiple masses in one or more organs; a lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate with a high percentage of plasma cells within the lesion staining for IgG4; a peculiar pattern of fibrosis known as "storiform" fibrosis; and elevated serum IgG4 concentrations. IgG4-RD can occur in various organs, including pancreas, kidneys, lungs, retroperitoneum, and prostate gland. The head and neck involvements of IgG4-RD have been chiefly described in Mikulicz disease (MD), Küttner's tumor, orbital? inflammatory pseudotumor, and idiopathic hypertrophic pachymeningitis (IHP) previously. Recent studies reported that IgG4-RD could also involve ear, nose and throat. Here we reviewed the literatures about ear, nose and throat involvement by IgG4-RD, in order to provide some theoretical bases for the diagnosis and treatment of IgG4-RD.

Excessive gestational weight gain has already become a global clinical and public health problem that seriously affects maternal health. Excessive gestational weight gain not only increases the cesarean section rate and induces adverse pregnant outcomes, but also affects offspring development and health. This article reviews the effects of excessive weight gain during pregnancy on offspring health and its underlying mechanisms. Excessive gestational weight gain may increase the risk of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases of the respiratory tract, diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, mental or psychological illness among offspring, and the pathophysiological mechanisms include inflammatory response, intestinal flora dysbiosis and epigenetics theory. However, further studies are required to validate these hypotheses and to evaluate the effect of excessive weight gain at different gestational stages on offspring health, so as to provide insights into reasonable management of weight gain during pregnancy and improvements of offspring health.
