This survey was conducted from January 1991 to May 1991. Two hundred and eight residents in 4 government supported homes for the aged and hundred and eleven living in the community in Taegu, Korea, were examined to evaluate the depression and the anxiety of the aged with combined anxiety and depression scale (CADS) and somatization symptom check list (SCL). There are no significant differences between residents in the home for the aged and those living in the community on the total scores of CADS and SCL. However, in the case of the total score of CADS of the female subjects in the home for the aged were significantly higher than those of the community residents. The elderly in the home for the aged tended to have pure depression, while community residents were likely to have anxiety and depression. Fifty-two subjects of home for the aged and sixty-nine of the community scored over 50 points of CADS, which indicates considerable depression or anxiety. In psychosocial factors, the subjects who in the following situations had statistically significant higher scores than others. The results were as follow. Poor health, unhappiness, unsatisfaction to the past occupation, pessimistic thought in future view for both group and unsatisfaction of the relationship with familiar people for the elderly in the community. The SCL scores of two groups subgrouped by under 49 and 50 on CADS showed significant differences between each subgroup on all of the SCL items. It could be suggested that somatic symptoms for the aged is a sign of depression.

The corpus callosum is the main interhemispheric connection in human brain. Agenesis of corpus callosum may partial or complete, and it may have not functional abnormalities. Its prenatal sonographic diagnosis is difficult because of fetal head position, especially in a cephalic presentation. We experienced a case of complete agenesis of corpus callosum. The prenatal sonographic findings was disproportionate dilatation of lateral ventricle, which were suggestive finding of agenesis of corpus callosum or hydrocephalus. We could confirm the diagnosis of complete agenesis of corpus callosum by postnatal MRI.

Higenamine was isolated originally from Aconiti tuber from Aconitum species and recently Higenamine was synthesized. The purpose of this study is to investigate the adrenergic effect of Higenamine on rabbit cardiovascular system. Blood pressure, cardic output, systemic vascular resistance and heart rate were measured after intravenous injection of Higenamine(2-100microg/kg/min). The effects of Higenamine were compared with those of other sympathomimetic drugs. The changes in the cardiovascular systems after pretreatment with Propranolol, Atenolol and Hexamethonium were also studied. The following results were obtained. 1) Higenamine increased the cardic output and the heart rate and decreased the blood pressure and the systemic vascular resistance. Those changes were dose-dependent. The duration of action of Higenamine was 5 to 8 minutes. 2) The effects of Higenamine were similar to those of Isoproterenol. The amount of Higenamine was more than 100 times the required amount of Isoproterenol in order to obtain the same casdiovascular effects. 3) The effects of Higenamine were blocked by Propranolol, The increase of cardic output and heart rate were blocked by Hexamethonium. Higenamine has stimulating action on beta1 and beta2 receptors. But Higenamine is much less potent than Isoproterenol.

PURPOSE: This study attempted to identify influential variables on types of smoking in adult smokers, which have been derived from Q-study. METHODS: A survey was conducted with 328 adult smokers at community settings in Seoul, South Korea from April 2006 to July 2006. To identify the influential variables related to smoking, variables from the Trans-theoretical model(i.e., self-efficacy for smoking abstinence, smoking temptation, process of change, decisional balance(pros and cons)) and nicotine dependency were analysed by ANOVA. Post-comparison tests were also done. RESULTS: The scores of nicotine dependency and smoking temptation were higher in habitual craving types than any other types, while the scores of self-liberation and self-efficacy for smoking abstinence were higher in self control types than any other types. CONCLUSION: Specific smoking intervention methods for each of the smoking types needs to be developed, based on how different groups of individuals gets into a decisions to quit smoking within their contexts.

Rapid administration of solution containing dextroae results in marked hyperglycemia and osmotic diuresis hut a balanced electrolyte solution containing maltese does not increase blood sugar. 30 patients were chosen at random and divided into 3 groups j.e, one group received 5% dextrose in water, the second group received Hartmann solution and the third group, 5% maltose in a balanced electrolyte solution. The Patient's blood was collected in the operating room prior to the start l.V. infusion, for the measurement of blood sugar, insulin, osmolarity and electrolrtes in various conditions of N.P.O. Intravenous fluid was administered at a rate of 10 m1/kg/hour while anesthesia was induced and maintained with an endotracheal tube in place. Blood samples were taken one hour. 2 hours and 3 7ours f:on the time 1,V. infusion started, In the of 5% dextrose in water groups, the value of blood sugar and insulin was 88.5+/-12.1 mg% and 14.60+/-7.67 un/ml at NPO, 257.7+/-60.8mg% and 70.75+/-37.55 un/m1 at 1 hour, 298.8+/-84.4mg%: and 143.19+/-50.32 un/ml at 2 hours and 228.6+/-75.8% and 127.71+/-56.98 un/m1 at 3 hours. Although the b1ood sugar and insulin values increased markedly. but potassium and chloride were 4.74+/-0.55 mEq/l and 101.1+/-2.9 mEq/l and 4.11+/-0.31 mEq/l, 107.4+/-2.3 mEq/l and 3.75+/-0.41 mEq/l, 176.4+/-2.7mEq/l and 3.89+/-0.50mEq/l, 106.3+/-2.2 mEq/l and shoewed mild decrease, by the way, osmolarity and serum sodium did not changed. In contrast to the 5% dextrose in water groups, there are no changes in the blood glucose. insulin levels, osmolarity or and electrolrtes in the either Hartmann or Elitol (Elitol=5% maltose contained in a balanced electrolyte solution) groups. There was a slight increase in osmolarity with maltose but it was not significant. Accordingly it is concluded that rapid infusion of harmann or 5% maltose contained ina balanced electrolyte solution affects the blood sugar and insulin levels insignificantly compared to the dextrose cont5aining solution which increase the blood sugar and indulin levels markedly.

The May-Hegglin anomaly is a rare autosomal dominant trait characterized by platelet abnormalities in the peripheral blood and large (up to 5mu) pale blue staining inclusions in the cytoplasm of neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, and monocytes. We experienced a case of May-Hegglin anomaly in a 7 year old male and another case out of his family. His initial complaints at the admission were petechiae and intermittent epistaxis. Diagnosis was confirmed by peripheral blood smear and family study. We report the case with brief review of related literature.

Myotonic dystrophy is the most common systemic disease causing myotonia. We report the case of respiratory failure in a patient with myotonic dystrophy after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. We carried out neurologic testing, electromyography and DNA testing in this patient and electromyography in the family of the patient. Through electromyography and DNA testing, this patient was diagnosed with myotonic dystrophy type I. Myotonic dystrophy is characterized by gradual decline of muscle tone and myotonia. It is important that this disease be excluded through preoperative history taking, physical examination and family history taking.
