There has been no report on human infection of Hymenolepis diminuta in Korea until the first 3 cases were reported by our members after the identification of those eggs in stool in 1964. However, the distinct differentiation between H. diminuta and H. nana would often be difficult by the shape of eggs without adult worm. In 1965, authors found the additional case revealed the eggs in stool and succeeded to obtain three adult worms of H. diminuta from 10 years old boy in Pusan. The characteristic morphology of egg and adult worm were discussed to compare to those of H. nana. Conclusively, the first human infection of H. diminuta in Korea was reported after the identification both the eggs and adults worms

Patients with rickets frequently are seen by orthopaedic surgeon with complaints of growth disturbance, limb deformity, weakness, and multiple fracture. Among them, bow leg deformity is the most common and difficult orthopaedic problem. In growing child, however, if effective tretment is given sufficiently in early age and early disease process, the deformities usually correct spontaneously and there is little need for orthopaedic treatment other than careful observation. The orthopaedic treatment may be required to correct deformities that cannot be expected to improve with growth. A clinical study was done for 11 cses of rachitic bow leg deformity who were treated at the department of orthopaedic surgery, Catholic medical College and Center from Jan. 1978 to Dec. 1981. Results obtained were as follows: 1. The most common patients age group was in 1 to 2 years of age and there was no sexual difference. 2. Associated deformities with rachitic bow leg were rachitic rosary (5 cases), double wrist (3 cases), coxa vara (1 case), and Harrison's groove (1 case). 3. Low Ca * P solubility product, below the level of 30 (mg/dl)2 suggested active form of rickets in all cases. 4. Laboratory values such as Ca * P solubility product and alkaline phosphatase improved at 3 weeks after administration of vitamin D in 7 cases, 3 at 6 weeks, and no improvement in one case even at 6 months after treatment. 5. Six months after treatment, the average amount correction of tibiofemoral angle was 9° (43.7% of initial angle) in group 1, 13.3° (47.0%) in group II, 4.9° (29.6%) in group III, and 3.3°(25.6%) in group IV. 6. Through this study it is suggested that the more growth correction of the rachitic bow leg deformity in a younger child below the age of 2 is obtained with growth by treatment, whereas a little or no growth correction can be expected after the age of 3 or 4 years.

Tumor angiogenesis has been found to have prognostic significance in many tumor types for predicting an increased risk of metastasis. We assessed tumor vascularity in 28 cases of borderline malignancy and 71 cases of carcinoma of the ovary which had been resected and diagnosed, using the highly specific endothelial cell marker CD34. The numbers of microvessels were counted in 200 magnification in three highly vascularised areas. The numbers of microvessels in carcinomas were higher than that in the borderline malignancy of serous and mucinous tumors. The number of microvessels of mucinous carcinomas was significantly higher than that of serous carcinomas. There were neither significant differences in the number of microvessels according to histological tumor types (p=0.075) nor significant differences in the number of microvessels according to FIGO stages (p=0.072). But in serous carcinomas, the number of microvessels was higher in the FIGO III-IV stage than in the FIGO I-II stage (p=0.017). This study showed higher neovascularization in malignant tumor than borderline malignancy, and in the advanced stage (FIGO III-IV) than less advanced stage (FIGO I-II) of serous carcinomas.

We report one case of bilateral naviculo-medial cuneiform coalition in ten year old girl. She complained of pain in the medial aspect of the mid-foot related to long periods of standing and activity. Routine roentgenographs, specifically lateral views showed a bony bridge between the navicular bone and medial cuneiform. A biopsy revealed as fibrocartilaginous tissue. The bony bridge consists about one third in lateral view and 30 degree cephalad tilting in the antero-posterior view. Bilateral resection arthroplasty, with interposing flesh muscle fibers of the abductor hallucis, was performed for restoration of motion in the naviculo-medial cuneiform joint and relief of localized pain. Four months after surgery, pain around the mid-foot had almost complete subsided. One year postoperative, neither recurrence nor disability was observed. We will discuss the diagnosis and treatment of this rare case of bilateral naviculo-medial cuneiform coalition.

To investigate MR artifacts induced by metallic implants, scans were obtained using both the ferromagnetic Drake lip and the non ferromagnetic Yasargil clip. Scan were taken through the area of clips using geometrical phantom. The MRI was performed by spin echo technique and gradient echo technique on both 2.0T and 0.5T MR unit. The luthors evaluated the nature and differences of artifacts in each sequence and parameter. Artifacts induced by both lips were noted in the direction of frequency encoding gradient, and consisted of region of signal loss abutted in one side by survilinear region of bright signal. Geometric distortion of image was marked in the Drake clip, out was minimal in the Yasargil clip under both 2.0T and 0.5T. Artifacts were more pronounced in the gradient echo technique than those of the spin echo technique on both 2.0T and 0.5T. Although there were no differences n the nature of artifacts induced by the Drake clip among each parameter in the spin echo technique under 2.0T, artifacts were slightly more pronounced on T2 weighted image under the 0.5T field, but no differences were found in the nature of artifacts induced by the Yasargil clip in the spin echo technique under, both the 2.0T and 0.5T fields. Marked artifacts were induced through the small area of the Drake clip which were included in the scan plane, but induced artifacts were small when a small area of the Yasargil clip was included in the scan plane. It seemed likely hat artifacts were slightly more pronounced in the 2.0T than the 0.5T field in both clips, but objective evaluation of the difference was difficult, In conclusion, these results can be an essential basis for the interpretation of MR images or patents with metallic inplants.
