We describe four patients with herpes-associated erythema multiforme, who had clinical and histopathological features consistent with the so-called erythema multiforme minor. The appearance of lesions of herpes simplex were followed with intervals between 6 and 10 days by the recurrent developments of erythema multiforme several times in a year in each patient. Sinee herpes simplex virus infection is considered one of the major factors provocating erythema multiforme one may have to pay more attention to patient's history to define the nature of erythema multiforme.

OBJECTIVE: The kinetic indices of apoptosis and cell proliferation m a histopathologic spectrum of the cervical neoplasia were evaluated to clarify the correlation between cervical neoplasm and apoplasis. Specific lesioas included cervical intraepithelial neoplasia(CIN), catcinoma in situ(CIS), and invasive carcinama. METHODS: Archival samples from normal cervical epithelium(n=7), low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions(LGSIL, n=17), high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions(HGSIL, n=17), invasive squamaus carcinoma(n=7) were evaluated for apoptosis and cell proliferation. Apoptotic cells were identified with terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-labeling of the 3'-OH end of DNA nucleosomes, and then apoptotic index(A.I sum of apoptotic bodies/ 1000 tumor cells) and total cell count(* 400 magnification) were calculated. RESULTS: In normal squamous epitheliam, Apoptotic bodies were mainly localized in ial layers, for low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions(HGSIL) in superficial and intermediated layers, for high-pade squamous intraepithelial lesions(HGSIL) in intermediated and parabasal layers, for invasive carcinoma in full thic of squamous epithelium. Apototic indces(AI) in invasive carcinoma(mean: 6.21) were significantly higher than indices for high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions(HGSIL, mean: 0.98) and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions(HGSIL, mean: 0.98) were significantly higher than indices for low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions(LGSIL, mean: 0.12)(p<0.01), the total cell counts increased significantly as the specimens progressed toward invasive disease. (p<0.01) CONCLUSION: Apoptosis in cervical neoplasia appears to be closely related to poliferation and progression of the cervical squamous epithelial cell. This phenotype may allow identification of premalignant lesions with the potential to transform to cervical cancer.

The study was designed to evaluate the significant roles of SSRI in rat of depression model. Chronic exposure to mild unpredictable stress has been found to depress the consumption of sweet 1% sucrose solutions in the Sprague-Dawley rats. We applied the variety of 11 types of stress regimens and identified depressive behavious(developed by Willner) in 70 Sprague-Dawley rats. Rats in experiments were stratified into 6 groups, i.e.; 3 kinds of SSRI(paroxetine, fluoxetine, sertraline), clomipramine, choline and saline control. Memory function was evaluated by passive avoidance learning and retention test. The authors determined how long memory retention would remain improved with 24 hour, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 4 weeks at training-testing interval in depressive states of the Sprague-Dowley rats. The results were as follows; 1) There were to significant differences between the 6 groups at the 24 hour training-testing interval. 2) The paroxetine treated group showed significant differences from the control group at the 1 week and 2 weeks training-testing interval. 3) The paroxetine and the fluoxetine treated groups showed significant differences from the control group at 3 week training-testing interval. 4) The paroxetine and the choline treated groups showed significant differences from the control group 4 week training-testing interval. In summary, paroxetine had on effect on long term memory processing from 1st week to 4th week. Also, fluoxetine(or 3rd week) and choline(at 4th week) had effect on long term memory processing. Sertraline, clomipramine were ineffective on memory processing during 4 weeks observation. Possible explanations why paroxetine had early effect on memory processing than the other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are rapid bioavailability, which is the characteristics of pharmacokinetics of paroxetine. In clinical situation, author carefully suggest that SSRI would be beneficial to improve the memory function caused by depressive neurochemical changes.

A 56-year-old woman presenting a 10-year history of atrophic discoid patches with underlying subcutaneous nodules was seen. These skin lesions were distributed on the upper arms bilaterally. Biopsy specimens taken from the lesional skin showed epidermal and dermal changes consistent with the discoid lesions of the cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Deep dermis and subcutaneous fat tissue revealed sclerosis and fibrinoid alterations of the collagen and necrosis of fat cells, the features corresponding to the lupus ei ythematosus profundus. She had no laboratory evidences suspective of systemic lupus erythematosus or other connective tissue diseases. This patient with lupus erythernatosus profundus which cleveloped subsequent to the discoid lesion is consiclered to be a rarely encounteririg observation in lupus erythematosus.

In Systemic lupus erythematosus several correlations with anti-Ro antibodies have been noted. They are the increased incidence of photos nsitive skin disease, rheumatoid factor positivity, Sjogren's syndrorme, and a greatly increased incidence of the DR 3 hapIotype. In this study we examined the prevalence of anti-Ro anibodies(not concerned for anti-La, Sm, RNP) by double immunodiffusion method among thirty two Korean patients with systemic lupus erythematosus who had positive results on routine fluorescent antinuclear antibody test. We also have seen skin manifestations on these patients, and examined if there is any difference of the incidence for each skin sign between anti-Ro positive and negative subgroups. From the data obtained, the proportion of anti-Ro positives among these patients with systemic lupus erythematosus was 53% Regarding to the difference of the incidence of cutaneous rnanifestations between the two subgroups, the photosensitivity reaction was recongnized as a uniqu symptorn rnore prevalent (p<0. 05) in anti-Ro positive subgroup with the frequency of 65%.

Lichen planus is rare in Korea. and oral lichen planus is even rarer. To our knowledge, this is the first case reporting in Korean dermatological literature. 57 year-old man was seen for erythema with white striation on the oral mucosa in December 1981. The initial lisior s appeared on the buccal mucosa of left side of oral cavity 10 months ago. Thereafter he noticed similar lesions on the right side of buccal mucosa, hard palate, left side of upper and lower gingiva and left side of the lower lip. Histopathological and direct immunofluorescence studies showed typical features of lichen planus. Administration of griseofulvin(0.5gm. of Fulvicin' daily) for 4 weeks resulted in no clinical improvement. Oral retinoid(25mg of Ro 10-9359 daily) for 11 weeks resulte3 in healing of lesions with no side effect except slight dryness of the mouth.

A case of benign lichenoid keratosis(BLK) developed in a 25-year-old female is presented. She had two erythematous plaques with slightly verrucous surfaces on the lips for 4 weeks. A biopsy specirnen taken from the periphery of the lesion revealed a focal parakeratosis, the absence of granular cells, and hydropic degeneration of the basal cells in the epidermis. The upper dermal infiltrate composed chiefly of lymphacytes intermingled with a few histiocytes was also seen. The direct immunofluorescent study showed depositions of a few cytoid bodies and fibrin around the areas of the dermoepidermal junction. These plaques on her lips, demonstrating lichenoid tissue changes, cleared in 8 weeks from the evalution, without any treatment.
