2.Evaluation of the SLAP Lesion Using a Low-field (0.2T) Magnetic Resonance System.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic capabilities of the low-field (0.2T) magnetic resonance (MR) system in the detection of the superior labrum anterior to posterior (SLAP) lesion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred fifty patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging of the shoulder over a 7-month period. Forty-six patients underwent arthroscopic surgery, and the surgical results were correlated with the findings of the MR imaging. Arthroscopic procedures were performed within a mean of 8 days after MR imaging. MR imaging of the shoulder was conducted as follows: shoulder coil; T1-weighted spin echo, coronal-oblique images; T2-weighted gradient echo, coronal-oblique and axial images; and T2-weighted spin echo, coronal-oblique and sagittal-oblique images. Prospectively, one radiologist interpreted the MR images. RESULTS: The results of surgery were as follows: SLAP II in 26 shoulders, SLAP III in 1 shoulder, SLAP IV in 1 shoulder, normal labrum in 6 shoulders. For SLAP lesions with a higher grade than type 2, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy of the low-field MRI were 85.7%, 55.5%, 75%, 71%, and 74%, respectively. CONCLUSION: There was relatively good agreement for the comparison of the MR results obtained using a low-field MR system with the surgical findings for identifying SLAP lesions.

3.Characterization of Species of Cladobotryum which Cause Cobweb Disease in Edible Mushrooms Grown in Korea.

Four Cladobotryum isolates were collected from four different commercially grown mushroom types infected with cobweb disease in Cheongdo-gun and Chilgok-gun of Gyeongbuk Province, Korea in 2010. The isolates were identified as C. mycophilum from Agaricus bisporus and Pleurotus eryngii, C. varium from Flammulina velutipes and Hypsizygus marmoreus. The cultural characteristics of the four isolates were investigated using potato dextrose agar (PDA) media under nine different temperatures ranging from 5~32degrees C. Rapid growth of the isolates to colony diameters of 47~82 mm was observed at conditions of 18~22degrees C. No growth was observed at 32degrees C. C. mycophilum produced a yellowish red pigment while C. varium produced a cream colored pigment after cultivation for 25 days on PDA. Phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region and partial 28S rDNA from the four isolates confirmed they were C. mycophilum and C. varium. Cross pathogenicity tests revealed that the two isolates of C. mycophilum were highly pathogenic toward three mushroom types, but not toward H. marmoreus. The two isolates of C. varium were less pathogenic than those of C. mycophilum, but were pathogenic toward all mushroom types evaluated.

4.Hematologic Findings of Toxemia Mothers and Their Babies.

OBJECTIVE: Hematologic abnormalities in toxemia mothers and their babies have been documented. The purpose of this study was to explore the hematologic findings in mothers with toxemia and postnatal hematologic findings in their babies. The relationship of hematologic findings between toxemia mothers before delivery and their babies immediately after birth was also examined. METHODS: Forty-six pairs of singleton toxemia mothers and their babies born by C-section with 28 to 35 weeks of gestation from Jan. 1995 to Dec. 1999 were enrolled. Fifty pairs of singleton normotensive mothers and their babies with the same gestational period and delivery method were matched for control group. Blood samples of mothers were performed before delivery, and those of their babies, were done immediately after birth, day 3 and 7 of life. Hemoglobin(Hb) concentration, total white blood cell(WBC) count, absolute neutrophil count(ANC), and platelet count were examined. RESULTS: Toxemia mothers have significantly lower platelet count compared with controls(191,000+/-83,200/mm3 vs. 252,000+/-92,700/mm3, p<0.05). There were no difference between both groups in Hb, WBC and ANC. On the first day of life, Hb was significantly higher(16.97+/-2.36g/dL vs 14.32+/-1.5g/dL, p<0.05), but WBC, ANC and platelet count were significantly lower in babies born to toxemia mothers than those of control group(p<0.05 for all). In babies born to toxemia mothers, Hb was significantly decreased until the seventh day of life(16.97g/dL, 15.48g/dL, 14.61g/dL, p<0.05), however, WBC and platelet count were significantly decreased until the third day of life and then incresed until the seventh day of life(11,832/mm3, 8,334/mm3, 10,104/mm3 for WBC, p<0.05, and 152,220/mm3, 144,720/mm3, 214,090/mm3 for platelet, p<0.05, respectively). CONCLUSION: Hemoglobin concentration was significantly higher, whereas WBC, ANC and platelet were significantly lower in babies of toxemia mothers than those of control group. In babies born to toxemia mothers, Hb was significantly decreased until the seventh day of life, however, WBC and platelet count were significantly decresed until the third day and then increased until the seventh day of life. There was no relationship between hematologic findings of toxemia mothers and their babies.

5.Liver Abscess in Childhood.

We have presented an analysis of cases of liver abscess from the record of the Department of Pediatrics, Yonsei medical College, during the 10 year 8 months period from Jan. 1969 through Sept. 1979. The incidence of admission in pediatric was 0.05025%. There was male preponderance. The most frequently encountered symptoms and sings were fever and chill, anorexia, hepatomegale, pain and tenderness on right upper quadrant of abdomen. The pathogenetic mechanisms were lodgement in the liver of hematogenously dissemination, ascending infection of cholangitis, trauma. Cryptogenic liver abscess was seen in two cases. There were 5 cases of pyogenic liver abscess and 3 cases of amebic liver abscess. Undetermined etiology was noted in 2 cases. Roentgenography including scan is the most helpful diagnostic tool available. Only one patient with post-traumatic liver abscess was expired.

6.Outbreak of Rust Caused by Coleosporium asterum on Solidago virgaurea var. gigantea in Ulleung-do.

From June to October 2012, severe outbreaks of rust disease on Solidago virgaurea var. gigantea were observed in 5 different regions of Ulleung-do, Korea. Typical rust symptoms appeared as yellow spots, uredinia on leaves, and massive urediniospores covering the entire plant. Severely infected plants became discolored and died. On the basis of its morphological and molecular characteristics, the causal agent was identified as Coleosporium asterum. This pathogen has been reported as rust disease on S. virgaurea in the Canada and United States. In Korea, rust disease on S. virgaurea var. gigantea was reported as Uromyces rudbeckia in 1992. To the best of our knowledge, C. asterum is a novel rust pathogen on S. virgaurea var. gigantea in Korea.

Marssonina coronaria associated with apple blotch disease causes severe premature defoliation, and is widely distributed in Korea. Thirteen isolates were collected from orchards located in Gyeongbuk Province from 2005~2007. All isolates displayed over 99.6% and 99.2% sequence similarity to each other in internal transcribed spacer regions and partial sequences of 28S rDNA, respectively. The isolates were phylogenetically closely related to Chinese isolates. Selected isolates did not differ in their pathogenicity. The optimum conditions for fungal growth were 20degrees C and pH 6 on peptone potato dextrose agar (PPDA). Peptone and mannose were the best nitrogen and carbon source, respectively. Fungal growth was better on PPDA than on common potato dextrose agar. This study provides valuable information for integrated disease management program and facilitates the routine culturing of M. coronaria.

8.Complications and Perinatal Factors According to the Birth Weight Groups in the Infants of Diabetic Mothers.

PURPOSE: This study was performed to compare complications and perinatal factors according to the birth weight groups in the infants of diabetic mothers(IDM). METHODS: Three hundred and one singleton diabetic mothers and their babies of more than 30 weeks' gestational age admitted in the department of Pediatrics, Chonnam University Hospital from January 1996 to March 2002 were enrolled. Complications and perinatal factors were compared between large for gestational age(LGA) and appropriated for gestational age(AGA) infants. RESULTS: Hypomagnesemia was observed in 37.5%, jaundice in 21.3%, hypoglycemia in 11.1%, hypocalcemia in 7.0%, and birth injury in 19.6%. Congenital anomaly was noted in 24.9% with cardiovascular anomaly most commonly. In the LGA group, the frequencies of jaundice, hypoglycemia, tachypnea, and birth injuries were higher, and the interventricular septum was thicker than the AGA group. In the LGA group, Cesarean section rate, maternal height, weight before pregnancy, weight gain during pregnancy, and the incidence of unawareness of gestational DM were significant compared with the AGA group. CONCLUSION: In the LGA group, the frequencies of jaundice, hypoglycemia, tachypnea, and birth injuries were higher, and the interventricular septum was thicker than the AGA group. In the LGA group, maternal height, weight before pregnancy and weight gain during pregnancy were larger, and the incidence of unawareness of gestational DM was higher compared with the AGA group. These results suggest that careful examination and management are needed to detect the high risk, pregnant DM mothers with possible LGA babies.

9.Detection of Rib Fractures in Minor Chest Injuries: a Comparison between Ultrasonography and Radiography Performed on the Same Day.

PURPOSE: We wished to compare the ability of ultrasonography and radiography performed on the same day to detect rib fractures in minor chest injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred and fifteen patients with minor chest injuries were selected. Radiography and ultrasonography were performed on the same day with these patients. Chest wall pain was the only presenting symptom. Two radiologists performed ultrasonography. Fractures were identified by a disruption of the anterior margin of the rib and costal cartilage. The incidence and location of fractures and complications revealed by radiography and ultrasonography were compared. RESULTS: Radiographs revealed the presence of 70 rib fractures in 50 (23%) of 215 patients and ultrasonography revealed the presence of 203 rib fractures in 133 (62%) of 215 patients. Ultrasonography uniquely identified 133 rib fractures in 83 patients. Ultrasonography identified a 2.9 fold increase in the number of fractures in a 2.6 fold number of subjects as compared to radiography. Of the 203 sonographically detected fractures, 201 were located in the rib, one was located at the costochondral junction, and one in the costal cartilage. There were no complications seen by either radiography or ultrasonography. CONCLUSION: Ultrasonography reveals more fractures than those that may be overlooked on radiography for minor chest injuries.
