1.Pulmonary Cavernous Hemangioma: A case report.

The pulmonary cavernous hemangioma is usually from birth and there may be without symptoms until adulthood. Larger or multiple pulmonary angiomata with considerable pulmonary arteriovenous shunts may cause cyanosis, finger clubbing, dyspnea and frequently accompanyingbruit. Recently, we experienced a case of cavernous hemangioma of the lung. A 34-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for surgical evaluation of a 4 cm solitary, round nodule in the right upper lobe on the chest X-ray and CT scan. She had no symptoms. Laboratory findings are within normal limits except for elevated glucose levels. At surgery, the mass was well encapsulated and easily excised from the peripheral portion of the posterior segment of the right upper lobe. Grossly, it consisted of a 4 cm in diameter, round, soft, sponge-like, hemorrhagic, slightly lobulated mass with a smooth external surface. Microscopically, the mass was composed of vessels, which were thin walled, dilated and filled with blood. The wall of the abnormal vessels was thin and composed of endothelium and fibrous connective tissue with only a little smooth muscle. Immunohistochemically, the wall of the dilated abnormal vessesls showed negative reaction for cytokeratin(low and high) and epithelial membrane antigen but weakly positive reaction for UEA-1 in focal areas.

2.Leiomyosarcoma of the penis.

Leiomyosarcoma of the penis is an extremely rare disease. We have encountered a case of leiomyosarcoma of the penis in a 45 year old man. On staging work up. local invasion to corpus cavernosum. but no evidence of lymph node metastasis was evident. After the confirmation of leiomyosarcoma by excisional biopsy, the patient underwent partial penectemy. Herein we report this case with the review of literatures.

3.A case of Aicardi syndrome with cleft lip and palate.

A case of Aicardi syndrome with cleft lip and palate was experienced at the Department of Pediatrics, College of Medicine, Hallym University, and the patient's infantile spasm was treated with ACTH. In previous studies, four cases of Aicardi syndrome accompanied by cleft lip and palate were reported. We present the fifth case of Aicardi syndrome with cleft lip and palate in the world. Thus, facial clefts may be found as an occasional manifestation of Aicardi syndrome.

4.Multiple Biliary Papillomatosis: A case report.

Multiple biliary papillomatosis involves an epithelial field change of the intrahepatic and extrahepatic portions of the biliary tree. Pathologically it is benign, occasionally with dysplasia, but the clinical behavior is regarded as having a low-grade malignant potential. Such malignancy is rare but the prognosis is poor if it is impossible to remove the tumor completely. Here, we report one case of multiple biliary papillomatosis in the biliary tree.

6.Quantitative and Qualitative Estimation of Bacteria Contaminating Human Hairs.

Human hairs have been known to be easily contaminated with microorganisms. This study was performed in order to measure what bacterial species and how much microorganisms contaminate human hairs in specific place. Virgin human hairs were left at 6 positions in inside corner and beside window in a laboratory for 7 days. The number of viable bacterial cells, which were determined by most probable number method, contaminating the human hairs was measured at a maximum of 10(6)/g hair and a minimum of 10(3)/g hair in inside corner and maximum of 10(6)/g hair and a minimum of 10(3)/g hair beside window. The bacterial cells-contaminating human hairs were observed via fluorescence light microscopy after 4',6-diamino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining. The bacterial community contaminating human hairs was analyzed via the thermal gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE) technique, based on the diversity of the 16S-rDNA variable region. In total, approximately 20 bacterial species were detected from 12 groups of hair samples. In this study, general experimental methods-fluorescence staining, TGGE and MPN-were combined to develop new method for observation and estimation of bacteria contaminating human hairs.

8.Role of p53 gene mutation in tumor aggressiveness of intracranial meningiomas.

The mutations that occur in the p53 tumor suppressor gene have been studied in various human malignant tumors. However, little is known about this gene in meningiomas. To investigate the relationship and frequency of p53 gene mutations, the p53 polymerase chain reaction-single stranded conformational polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) and immunohistochemical study were performed on the 41 intracranial meningiomas (21 benign, 11 atypical, and 9 malignant). The higher the p53 protein expression rate, the poorer the histologic grade (9.5%, 72.7%, and 88.9% in benign, atypical and malignant meningioma, respectively) (p=0.000). The p53 protein expression rate was higher in recurrent meningioma (71.4%) than in nonrecurrent meningioma (10.5%) (p=0.002). PCR-SSCP method was performed in positive p53 protein immunoreactivity cases. p53 gene mutation rate was higher in the atypical (62.5%) and malignant (25%) meningiomas than in the benign meningioma (0%) (p=0.232). Also, the rate was higher in recurrent menigioma (20%) than in nonrecurrent meningioma (0%) (o=0.495). Among five to eight exons of the p53 gene, the mutation was observed on exon 7 more frequently. In conclusion, p53 immunoreactivity and p53 gene mutation are closely correlated with histologic grade and histologic atypia of intracranial meningiomas. p53 gene mutation would be considered as a useful marker to detect the progression of intracranial meningiomas.
