OBJECTIVETo evaluate the effects of acupuncture on post-stroke spastic paralysis.
METHODSA systematic evaluation including all the relavant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or quasi-RCTs of acupuncture and moxibustion for treatment of post-stroke spastic paralysis were carried out according to the method recommended by the Cochrane Collaboration.
RESULTSNine hundred and seventy-eight patients being included in fourteen papers met the enrolled criteria. However, their methodological quality was relatively poor. Meta-analysis of nine trials indicated that there was no significant difference between the treatment groups and the control groups in Ashworth scores, Carr-Shepherd scores, nerve defect scores and hip adductor tension scores. Whereas the Fugel-Meyer scores in one trial and the Barthel scores in three trials were better in the treatment groups than those of the control group.
CONCLUSIONA reliable conclusion can not be drawn from the present data because of the defects in methodological quality and insufficient numbers of trials, especially lack the long-term terminal outcomes, although it appears a tedency that acupuncture can improve the conditions of post-stroke spastic paralysis. Therefore, it is necessary to perform more multi-central RCTs of high quality in future.

The main aim of the Surveillance of Cerebral Palsy in Europe (SCPE) network was to develop a central database of cerebral palsy (CP) cases across Europe. Monitoring trends in prevalence rates of CP should contribute to collaborative studies on risk factors or quality of life for children living with CP. A multi-centre collaboration of CP registries used a clear definition of CP to accurately and consistently identify cases of CP. The rate of CP within the collaboration varied from 1.5 to 3 per 1000 live births. For the birth cohort 1980 to 1996 (n=9128), 53.9% of the CP children had a bilateral spastic CP, 31.0% had unilateral spastic CP, 6.6% were dyskinetic and 4.1% ataxic. Among CP children, 20.4% had a birth weight less than 1500 g and 25.5% were born before 32 weeks gestational age. Intellectual impairment corresponding to an IQ<50 was found in 29.5% of CP children. The proportion of CP children unable to walk, even with aids, was 30.3%. Twelve and a half percent of CP children were known to have a severe visual impairment. It was concluded that registers are the best means to implement epidemiological research into CP.

8.Advances of studies on acupuncture and moxibustion for treatment of language disorder in children with cerebral palsy.
Chinese Acupuncture & Moxibustion 2009;29(9):772-774
The literatures about the therapeutic effect of acupuncture and moxibustion on language disorder in children with cerebral palsy were reviewed. The symptoms of language disorder in children with cerebral palsy and the procedures of rehabilitation treatments were analyzed. The acupuncture intervention on language disorder in children with cerebral palsy was investigated. It showed that the acupuncture intervention may markedly improve the condition of language disorder in children with cerebral palsy. However, the effectiveness is compared between comprehensive therapy and single therapy in the current literatures on acupuncture intervention. Therefore, the compa rison between comprehensive therapies was lacked, and the advantage of acupuncture intervention combined with other therapies was not demonstrated. In the future, the studies should focus on the combination of various therapies and the different effectiveness of different therapies. Furthermore, the studies should focus on the mechanism of acupuncture. Therefore, it may contribute to build a comprehensive treatment system in which acupuncture is dominatant for cere bral palsy in children.

In this study, we reported a case of progressive pseudorheumatoid dysplasia in Peking University Third Hospital. A 56-year-old male patient presented with hip joint pain for more than 40 years and multiple joints pain with limitation of movements of these joints for 28 years. This patient suffered from joint pain and impaired range of motion of the hip, knee, elbow and shoulder gradually, associated with difficulty in walking and inability to take care of himself. He was diagnosed with "femoral head necrosis" or "ankylosing spondylitis" in local hospitals, but the treatment of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and sulfasalazine was not effective. Up to the age of 14, the patient displayed normal physical development, with the highest height was about 158 cm, according to the patient recall. However, his height was 153 cm at present. There was no history of similar illness in any family member. Physical examinations descried limitation of movement of almost all joints. Enlargement and flexion deformity of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints of the hands resulted in the claw hand appearance. Limited abduction and internal and external rotation of the shoulder and hip could be find. He had normal laboratory findings for blood routine test, biochemical indexes and acute phase reactants such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). Furthermore, HLA-B27 and autoimmune antibodies such as rheumatoid factor (RF), anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) antibody and antinuclear antibody (ANA) were all negative. X-ray of the hip showed loss of the joint space and irregularities of the femoral head, both femoral head were flattened, it could be see hyperplasia, osteophytes, bilateral femoral neck thicken, neck dry angle turned smaller. The radiological findings of the spinal vertebra indicated kyphosis deformity, narrowing of the intervertebral discs, vertebral syndesmophytes and flattening of the vertebra. However, there was no clues of bone marrow edema in the lumbar MRI. At last, genetic testing for the Wnt1-inducible signaling pathway protein 3 (WISP3) gene was done and indicated compound heterozygous mutations: 756C>G and c.866dupA. These two mutations were derived from the patient's mother and father (the patient's parents each had a heterozygous mutation). Two exons of the WISP3 gene had nucleotide changes leading to amino acid mutations. According to the patient's history, symptoms, physical examinations, radiological findings and genetic testing, the final definitive diagnosis was progressive pseudorheumatic dysplasia.

Journal of Clinical Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery 2007;21(10):450-452
OBJECTIVE:
To investigation the further inquiry the reasons of cerebral palsy child's hearing lose, and giving the hearing lose children of cerebral palsy overall medical treatments in time, this paper has given the academic comprehensive analysis of the reasons of this synthetic symptom above.
METHOD:
By the means of the medical checks of ABR, OAE and acoustic immittance measurements, we have investigated the reasons, and analyzed the types of all cerebral palsy children in our hospital from January to December in 2005.
RESULT:
The result of medical checks in 484 cerebral palsy children showed that there were 160 abnormal cases (33.06%), and we marked OAE medical check to the 92 abnormal cerebral palsy children, there are 36.90% passing rates. among which the passing rate of slight hearing lose (72.00%) is obviously higher than that of the serious hearing lose (4.20%).
CONCLUSION
The symptoms of serious suffocation, premature delivery, and jaundice are not only the main factors given rise to the cerebral palsy, but also are the main reasons led to cerebral palsy child's hearing lose.
