1.Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology of Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Lung: A Case Report.
Korean Journal of Cytopathology 1990;1(2):170-174
The mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a rare tumor in the lung. A case of bronchial mucoepidermoid carcinoma diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology is presented. The smear showed many intermediate cells with occasional mucus-secreting cells. Malignant squamous cells were not present. The cellular arrangement of intermediate cells was overlapping and grouped in ball-like fashion. These cytologic features are unique for diagnosis of this tumor.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a common malignant tumor of the salivary glands, but rare in other sites. Only 10 cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of liver have been reported, and there was 1 case of double primary cancer of hepatocellular carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The definite diagnosis and pathogenesis are still controversial. However, hepatocellular carcinoma is the second most common cancer in Korea. Its etiology is better known compared to mucoepidermoid carcinoma. We report a rare case of double primary cancer of mucoepidermoid carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma in liver.

4.Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Palpebral Conjunctiva.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2006;47(10):1669-1672
PURPOSE: We report our experience with a case of a nodular lesion of the lower palpebral conjunctiva with histologic features consistent with mucoepidermoid carcinoma. METHODS: A 72 year-old man presented with a left lower palpebral conjunctiva lesion. 3 x 3 mm sized flat pedunculated yellowish red mass was observed. Incisional biopsy proved the mass a mucoepidermoid carcinoma and wide local resection was conducted. RESULTS: Hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections showed lobules of tumor cells, consisting of predominantly epidermoid cells and scattered islands of mucin-secreting cells. Mucicarmine-stained sections demonstrated strong positivity, consistent with the diagnosis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma. CONCLUSIONS: In any case presenting palpebral conjunctival lesion, mucoepidermoid carcinoma should be differentiated, and it is necessary to confirm the diagnosis through biopsy.

Malignant laryngeal tumors include a variety of histologic types with different biologic features, each calling for a different therapeutic approach and giving rise to a different prognosis. We experienced a case of laryngeal adenosquamous carcinoma which is an extremely rare neoplasm in larynx. The lesion is histologically distinctive because of the presence of mixed areas of unequivocal adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Differential diagnosis include adenoid squamous cell carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma. It is found that combined surgery and additional radiation therapy is necessary because the biologic behavior and prognosis of this neoplasm are considered as more aggressive and worse than that of conventional squameus cell carcinoma.

Acinic cell carcinoma(ACC) is the third common malignancy in major salivary gland. Fine needle aspiration cytology is a useful tool for the diagnosis of salivary gland lesions. However, some low grade malignancies, such as ACC and mucoepidermoid carcinoma show relatively high false negative rate, mainly due to deceptively benign cytomorphologic appearance. We experienced a papillary-cystic variant of ACC, having different cytopathologic features compared with those of classic ACC. Our case showed monolayered sheets and papillary clusters without any acinic structures or naked nuclei of the tumor cells. Foamy proteinaceous material was seen in the background. The tumor cells had a large amount of granular cytoplasm and eccentric nuclei. Many vacuolated or clear cells were also noted.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1998;36(4):737-741
Mucoepidermoid carcinoma on the lip is a very rare disease, consisting of epidermoid and mucus-producing cells histologically. A 47 year old female had had an asymptomatic, palpable, bean-sized nodule on the center of her upper lip for 2 years. Histological findings showed multiple oval nests consisting of epidermoid & clear cells and cystic spaces filled with faintly eosinophilic amorphous material in a fibrotic background throughout the dermis, subcutis, and muscular layer After a diagnosis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, Mohs micrographic surgery was performed for complete removal, and A - T flap with M plasty was designed for appropriate repair.

The appearance of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lung during in childhood is an uncommon neoplasm. Symptoms of progressive bronchial obstruction proceed the recognition of this lesion. Adequate surgical resection precludes the need for further radiation therapy or chemotherapy. The patient underwent bronchoscopy to investigate the cause of chronic coughing, which revealed a tumor. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma. He was treated by lobectomy. The patient has been well and free of recurrence.

9.Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology of High Grade Neoplasm and Spindle Cell Lesion of Salivary Gland.
Korean Journal of Cytopathology 2005;16(2):75-87
Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a very useful tool in the preoperative diagnosis of lesions of the salivary gland. Surgical therapy of high-grade malignancies (salivary duct carcinoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, squamous cellcarcinoma, carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma, small cell carcinoma, and sebaceous carcinoma) is different from that of benign lesions or low-grade malignancies. Therefore, the recognition of high-grade malignancies is important in salivary gland FNAC. Although recognition of high-grade malignancies of the salivary gland by FNAC is not difficult, precise classification of these malignancies is often impossible. Additionally, because of its rarity, FNAC of spindle cells and mesenchymal lesions of the salivary glands is a tool that is not familiar to many cytopathologists. The characteristic cytomorphologic features of these lesions are reviewed here with a discussion of specific diagnostic problems.

Korean Journal of Cytopathology 1999;10(2):133-143
Fine needle aspiration cytology of the salivary lesions was performed on 221 patients at Soonchunhyang University Hospital for 10 years. Of 221 aspirates, 6 aspirates(2.7%) were inadequate, 116 cases(52.5%) were non-neoplastic lesions, 76(34.4%) cases were benign neoplasms and 23 cases(10.4%) were malignant neoplasms. The cytologic diagnoses could be correlated with histologic findings in 58 cases. FNAC correctly discriminated between neoplastic and nonneoplastic lesions in fifty-seven lesions and failed in a case, and overall accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were 98.3%, 98.0%, and 100.0%. FNAC correctly discriminated malignant neoplasms from benign neoplastic/non- neoplastic lesions in fifty-three cases and failed in five cases, and overall accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were 91.3%, 72.7%, and 95.7%. Among three false negative cases, two mucoepidermoid carcinomas were misdiagnosed as mucocele and benign neoplasm, and an acinic cell carcinoma were misdiagnosed as Warthin's tumor. Two false positive cases were a Warthin's tumor misdiagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma and a pleomorphic adenoma misinterpretated as suggestive of malignancy. In conclusion, diagnostic accuracy of FNAC of salivary lesions is high, and the possibilities of low grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma and acinic cell carcinoma should be considered on hypocellular smears with mucoid or fluidy background.
