Cytopathologic findings of two cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea are reported. The carcinomas grew as a intratracheal mass. By bronchial washing, brushing and/ or post-bronchoscopic sputum cytology, large cohesive sheets, lobulated clusters, or three dimensional ball-like structures were obtained. They had numerous cyst-like spaces containing characteristic globular basophilic material. The tumor cells were uniform and had a small amount of cytoplasm. Nuclei were small and hyperchromatic. Nucleoli were occasionally observed. The cytological diagnosis was confirmed by bronchoscopic biopsies.

Primary tracheal tumors are relatively rare. Here we report one case of primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea which was ever misdiagnosed as asthma and hysteria. In this case, the pulmonary function test was normal, and firstly no obvious abnormalities were found in laryngoscopy, bronchoscopy and CT scan of chest. Later a sagittal and coronal reconstruction CT scan of trachea showed a mass situated in the subglottic trachea. Lastly a laryngoscopy was again done after a tracheal incision and showed a small mass in the posterior wall of the subglottic trachea, and tumor ablation was performed. In addition, we reviewed the literature of primary tracheal tumors and summarized the epidemiology, presenting features, available therapeutic options of the disease.

Central malignant salivary gland tumor of the mandible is rarely observed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, which only comprises a small proportion of cancer patients. In this study, a patient with central adenoid cystic carcinoma of the mandible is presented, and relevant literature is reviewed.

6.Cytologic Diagnosis of Basaloid Neoplasms of Salivary Gland.
Korean Journal of Cytopathology 2005;16(2):67-74
Although fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has become one of the primary tools for diagnosing salivary gland lesions, some of these methods continue to confuse pathologists. The most common problems occur so-called basaloid neoplasms. Basal cell adenomas are frequently misdiagnosed as pleomorphic adenomas, and in worse cases, as adenoid cystic carcinomas. The cytologic diagnostic accuracy of basaloid neoplasms could be increased by a better understanding of the histology and the nature of the tumor cells. These are displayed well in aspiration smears. A consideration of differential points on the basis of the epithelial-stromal relationship is offered in this paper.

Canalicular adenoma is a rare benign tumor that arises in the minor salivary gland. Clinically, it usually presents as an asymptomatic nodule on the upper lip or buccal mucosa. It is necessary to histopathologically differentiate canalicular adenoma from basal cell adenoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma. Canalicular adenoma shows tubular structures composed of 1 or 2 layers of columnar cells and intraluminal hemorrhage. Squamous morules, which seem to represent metaplasia, are a unique finding for this tumor. Immunohistochemical staining is often helpful for the diagnosis of canalicular adenoma, which is positive for S-100 and CK (AE1/3). Herein, we report a case of canalicular adenoma in a 71-year-old man who presented with an asymptomatic nodule on the upper lip. As far as we know, this is the first report of canalicular in Korean Dermatology Journal.

A case of metastatic adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lung, originated from the trachea, was diagnosed by fine needle aspiration. Although the cytologic features of adenoid cystic carcinoma have been well described, it is easy to confuse adenoid cystic carcinoma with more common primary small cell neoplasms of the lung, i.e., small cell carcinoma, well differentiated adenocarcinoma, and carcinoid tumor of the lung. The features distinguishing adenoid cystic carcinoma from these neoplasms include 1) tight, globular, honeycomb pattern of cells, 2) acelluair basement membrane material in the lumen, and 3) cells lacking true nuclear molding and having bland chromatin pattern. The mcrphologic feature of metastatic adenoid cystic carcinoma in this case was so distinctive as to permit a definite diagnosis by aspiration cytology.

9.Non-radiologic Methods for Predicting Vesicoureteral Reflux in Childhood Urinary.
Journal of the Korean Society of Pediatric Nephrology 1997;1(1):38-45
To evaluate the diagnostic findings of salivary gland tumors, we reexamined aspiration cytology smears of 7 cases of pleomorphic adenoma, 3 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma, and 3 cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, performed during April 1986 to March 1990, which were com?med by surgical excision and histologic diagnosis. The results obtained are summarized as follows ; 1. All cases of pleomorphic adenoma showed branching cellular clusters of epithelial and myoepithelial cells. Acellular elements including myxomatous and chondroid components were observed. There were no cellular pleomorphism and nucleoli. Keratinizing squamous epithelial cells and keratin pearls were noted. 2. The smears of adenoid cystic carcinoma showed cell balls or cell cords containing a central hyaline core. Nuclear atypism and the nucleoli were frequently observed. There were no keratinizing squamous epithelial cells. 3. The smears of mucoepidermoid carcinoma showed mainly sheets or clusters of intermediate cells and some mucin-producing cells. Some nuclear pleomorphism was observed. Mucinous material and many inflammatory cells were present in the background.

Adenoid basal carcinoma of the cervix is very rare tumor. It is slow-growing and locally invasive tumor amenable to simply hystrectomy. It is common to be associated with severe dysplasia and carcinoma in situ(CIS) of cervix Occasionally, concommitant microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma or adenocarcinoma may also be seen. Differential diagnosis includes adenoid cystic carcinoma, which is more aggressive tumor associated with regional lymph node involvement and late pulmonary metastasis. We have recently experienced a case of adenoid basal carcinoma of the cervix in 61 years-old woman, which is presented with a brief review of the literature.
