Objective To assess the ability of the new software SonoAVC to measure follicular volume and to compare these volume calculations with those made by conventional methods. Methods Three-dimensional ultrasound imaging was used to acquire volumetric data from the ovaries of 50 women undergoing controlled ovarian stimulation as part of in-vitro fertilization treatment. SonoAVC was used to automatically measure the volume of follicles and virtual organ computer-aided analysis(VOCAL) was also applied to measure volume, which was used as the standard of volume measurement. And the three perpendicular diameters (xyz diameters) of follicles were manually measured by conventional two-dimensional(2D) ultrasound, which were used to estimate volume using the sphere formula. And the validity of each technique was compared using limits of agreement. Results One hundred and seventy-six follicles were studied. SonoAVC and VOCAL provided highly accurate and repeatable follicular volume measurements in all cases. Volumes estimated from manually derived follicular diameter measurements were less accurate and repeatable. VOCAL took more time in follicular volume of measurement than SonoAVC and conventional 2D displays. Conclusions SonoAVC provides highly accurate, repeatable,and efficient measurements of follicular volume.

BACKGROUND: The c-fos gene is commonly expressed in neurons,which may act as one of the signs of activities and reflection of injured neural cells.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression of hippocampal c-fos gene of rats with ischemic cerebral injury and the protective role of shenmai injection at the molecular level.DESIGN: Randomized controlled study.SETTING: Department of Histology and Embryology, Luzhou Medical College.MATERIALS: The experiment was completed at the Department of Histology and Embryology, Luzhou Medical College from January to March 2002. Totally 30 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into control group, ischemia group and treatment group with 10 in each group.METHODS: Bilateral common carotid arteries of rats in the ischemia and treatment groups were splinted for 30 minutes and reperfused for 1 hour to establish models of ischemic cerebral injury. Rats in the treatment group were injected with 2 mL/kg of shenmai (constituted with hongshen, dwarf lilyturf tuber and other Chinese herbal medicines) 30 minutes before ischemia. Rats in the ischemia group were not treated with any drugs, and rats in the control group were treated with sham operation but without splinting common carotid artery and giving any drugs. Hippocampal tissue of rats was obtained to make paraffin sections. In every group, one section from each rat was taken at random. Totally 100 neurons of every group were counted. Expression of c-fos gene in hippocampal neuron was observed according to the nuclear color of neurons (+++ as dark-brown mark;++ as brown mark; + as light brown mark; - as no brown mark).MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: c-fos expression of hippocampal neurons of rats in each group.RESULTS: Totally 30 rats entered the final analysis. Expression of c-fos gene in hippocampal neurons was significantly more in the ischemia group than that in the control group (+++: 24/visions, 7/visions, P ＜ 0.05); but that in the treatment group was less than that in the ischemia group (+++:13/visions, 24/visions, P ＜ 0.05).CONCLUSION: Shenmai injection can reduce the expression of c-fos gene in hippocampal neurons of rats with ischemic cerebral injury, and can protect neural cells of ischemic cerebral injured tissue.

OBJECTIVETo explore the curative effect and safety of acupuncture for mild cognitive disorders after stroke.

METHODSRandomized controlled trial was adopted and one hundred cases conforming to criteria were divided into a combined acupuncture and medication group (group A) and a medication group (group B), 50 cases in each group. The basic treatment of cerebrovascular disease was applied in two groups. The group A treated was with acupuncture at Baihui (GV 20), Shenting (GV 24) and Qucha (BL 4) etc. and oral administration of Nimodipine. In group B, Nimodipine was taken orally. The treatment lasted for 3 months, the scores of Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), modified Hasegawa Dementia Scale (HDS-R) and Barthel Index (BI) were observed before and after treatment in two groups.

RESULTSThe total effective rate in group A was 66.7% (32/48), which was superior to 30.4% (14/46) in group B (P < 0.05). The scores of MMSE, HDS-R and BI after treatment were apparently improved as compared with those before treatment in two groups (all P < 0.01). The improvements in group A were superior to those in group B (all P < 0.05). There was no adverse event reported during the treatment in two groups.

CONCLUSIONAcupuncture can improve activity of daily living and has significant effect in treating mild cognition disorders after stroke without adverse reactions.

Objective To investigate the expressions of estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) subtypes in human endometrial carcinoma tissues. Methods Thirty samples of normal endometrial tissue and 66 endometrial carcinomas were investigated using western blot assays and reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. Results (1)Both ER? and ER? mRNA were significantly increased in endometrial carcinoma compared with that in normal endometrium tissues. The relative value of ER? and ER? mRNA in endometrial carcinoma was 8.00?7.77, 3.84?2.57 and that in normal endometrium tissues was 4.15?3.55, 0.41?0.29, respectively. Objective To explore the clinical and pathologic features of Langerhans cell histiocytosis(LCH).Method Thirty-eight cases of LCH from both in hospital and outpatient department in dermatology and pediatry department from Jan.1991 to Jun.2006 were analyzed about the features of clinic,pathology and immunohistochemistry.Results The mean age of onset was 2.18 years old.The male /female ratio was 1.71.Skin lesions occurred in 78.9% of the patients.Among them,68.5% were as the first manifestation.The eruptions mainly distributed on trunk,90% of them presented as hemorrhagic maculopapules,nevertheless,3.3% of the eruptions showed as crust with hilar depression,which was similar to pityriasis lichenoides etvarioliformis acuta.Fever,hepatomegalia and splenomegia occurred in patients at a rate of 60.5%,68.4%,55.3% respectively.Thirty-one point six percent of the patients had got lymphadenectasis,the neck and inguinal lymph nodes were the common site to be affected.Ossature involvement occurred in 31.6% of the patients,which 8.3% got multiple injuries,howe-ver,91.7% got a solitary bone involved.Skull was the main site to be injured,else were lumbar,humerus,hipbone,an so on.Respiratory tract,auditory canal,mucosa were also the sites involved in this disease,but the incidence rate was lower than 10%,respectively.The laboratory data showed that 81.3% of the patients were anaemia,60.7% with abnormal subgroup of T-cell,and 32.1% positive for EBV-IgG.The skin histopathology data of 26/30 cases revealed that lichenoid infiltrates of Langerhans cells confined to the upper dermis.Cytologic features were cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasms,and longitudinally grooved or reniform nuclei.Lymphocytes and a few eosinophils also could be seen.Four cases of thirty showed that the proliferative Langerhans cells were with pale cytoplasms,besides,there were numerous eosinophils,and sometimes a few multinucleate cells were scattered.The immunity test of 20 cases of thirty displayed that CD1a(+)S100(+)KP-1(-).Biopsy of lymphaden and tumor of the skull of the rest 8 patients were all diagnosed as eosinophilic granuloma through both hematoxylin and eosin-stained section and immune marks.Conclusions Multiple systems can be involved in LCH.Hemorrhagic maculopapules,fever and splenohepatomegalia are common presentations in this disease.The morphous of nucles of histiocytes is particular,and to diagnose definitely,both CD1a(+) and S-100(+) are needed.
