1.Multipe CD-ROM Title Sharing System Using By Multiple Users.

A method is well known to backup the necessary and useful data into CD-ROM. It is, however, difficult for multiple users to simultaneously access these CD-ROMs which are scattered. In this paper, we have developed the system of which many user can concurrently access some CD-ROMs which are scattered in several locations. The system developed in this paper can be operated under a client/sever network and in window 95 for an easily usage. The system has, now, evaluated very good in some library of university, official department, and hospital in korea. The developing of the system is, further, to extend CD-Recorder, Juke-Box, and so on.

In the traditional cadaver dissection course, it is hard to demonstrate dissection skills to all the medical students because of limitations such as the high ratio of students to instructors and the lack of facilities. To overcome these limitations, we developed a digital anatomy dissection course. Through this system, it was possible to perform effective instruction of anatomic dissection. This method could provide the appropriate teaching in a short period of time. Furthermore, students can review the dissection course on digital files saved on a CD-ROM. Clinical cadaveric workshops can be provided by this method not only for students but also for continuing medical education for clinicians.

3.The Effects of a CD-ROM Educational Program for Sexual Violence Prevention on Sexual Knowledge of Middle School Students.

PURPOSE: This study analyzed the effects of a CD-ROM educational program for the prevention of sexual violence in relation to the sexual knowledge of middle school students. METHOD: A one group, pre-test-post-test design was used. The subjects of this study were 171 middle school students in Kangwon Province, Korea. The questionnaire included 34 items relating to overall sexual knowledge, and included questions on sexual violence. The collected data were analyzed using the mean, standard deviation and paired-t tests. RESULT: There were significant differences in the sexual knowledge by demographic characteristics between the pre- and post-tests. Of the 34 items, 20 showed significant differences in the sexual knowledge between the pre- and post-tests. CONCLUSION: The overall level of sexual knowledge of the students increased after taking the CD-ROM educational program. Further testing will be required to determine the effects of the CD-ROM using a control group and random sampling.

4.Development of a CD-ROM Titled 'Atlas of Pathology' for Medical Students.

The authors have made a CD-ROM titled 'Atlas of Pathology (AP)' for medical students to understand histopathologic findings with ease. We used a 35 mm film scanner to convert an existing file into digital images. A pathologist and two professional programmers collaborated to create the program 'AtlasMaster 1.0' based on (IBM) PC for organization of previously captured digital images. Minimum system requirement for the 'AP' was Pentium II 166 MHz, 32 MB RAM, Windows 95 or 98, 800 600 resolution, 16-bit color, 20 speed CD-ROM drive. The 'AP' was composed of a execution file (Pathology_Atlas.exe), a DB file (pathology.mdb), and reference files (*.bmp, *.jpg, *.txt). The DB file contained fields for chapter, section, disease entity, and information for location of reference files. About 1,000 color images for various kinds of gross and microscopic pictures were stored in the CD-ROM and those were classified according to the chapters, sections, and disease entities. The 'AP' was easy to manipulate, and had advantages of self-learning for students. It could be applied to other fields in which many images were dealt with, such as histology, radiology, endoscopy, dermatology, and plastic surgery. The 'AP' was handy and very useful for medical students to study pathology and it would be a powerful self-learning tool.

5.Establishing a Computerized Information System: Diagnostic test.

The purpose of this research was to develop an information system for diagnostic tests regarding their purpose, method. and notification, and to provide people in the field with easy access to information by using CD-ROM title or data communication. The Joint Application Design Method which is popular in developing information systems was used. First the user requirements for the target system were gathered and analyzed through a survey of patient and nurses in a number of hospitals. Thus. the functions which were to be included were analyzed in details. A list containing all the required tests and their content was defined to be used as the database in the system. Focusing on making the searching procedure easy to use. the researchers defined the input and the output of the system to have for a user-friendly user interface. Searching functions using not only, a name of the test category or a test name itself, but also a disease name were added. Furthermore, the function of maintaining an updated database in an efficient way was also included. This system is useful in that it provides an efficient and effective way to search for any necessary information about diagnostic tests and an easy way to keep the updated database. Based on user and system requirement analysis. user-friendly interface. and the well-defined database. all of which were designed and implemented in this research. it is expected that an Internet-based diagnostic test information system can be developed in a near future.

6.Development of the Health-Information System using a Multimedia Tool.

BACKGROUND: As people have been interested in healt,h and as the microcomputers with multimedia steeing have been supplied more and more, there is increasing need of multimedia information about health. The CD-ROM, which is a representative multimedia tool, is capable of interacting between information-provider and users, offering audiovisual interface, and saving great deal of knowledge. METHODS: We developed the health-information system to provide ordinary people with hea1th information using multimedia tools. It, has 7 parts ; self-diagnosis, exploring human body, drug information, hospital information, first-aid treatment, Q and A, and medical common sense. We got image data such as figures, photos, X-rays, electrocardiograms and pathologic specimens with scanner and film scanner, also moving image(video) with video-capturing program. RESULTS & CONCLUSIONS: We hope the multimedia health-information system to become a useful methodology of patient education and to be used as an information source in medical information network in the near future.

7.Interactive Atlas Using Web Bowser: CT and MRI of the Temporal Bone.

PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to construct an interactive atlas of the temporal bone using a web-browser and to provide a template for web-based teaching files, using free and shared applets and scripts on the internet. MATERIALS AND METHODS: HRCT and MR images of the temporal bone including its normal anatomy, tumors, trauma, inflammation, anomalies and vascular diseases were used in this study. Acquired radiologic images were transformed to GIF/JPG formats and to achieve appropriate image quality, were retouched. Text and image files of normal anatomy and diseases were written by HTML. JavaScript and applets were inserted in the HTML files for the interactive display of images and texts. In order to review anatomic features and diseases, a sarch index was also attached to the last part of the file. RESULTS: Using interactive images and texts, temporal bone anatomy and disorders were displayed. Scripts and applets were also useful for indicating specific points of interest when a mouse was placed over the anatomic sites. The atlas may be viewed in the form of a CD-ROM, or via the internet using any computer platform or web-browser. CONCLUSION: This web-based teaching file of the temporal bone offers dynamic and interactive education. It can be usefully employed as a template for the production of interactive educational materials, offering JavaScript and Providing suitable input for classes. It can replace texts and imaging contents.

8.Development and Evaluation of Sanitation Education Media for Restaurant Employers and Employees.

Presently, media for sanitation education consisting of a sanitation manual and a CD-ROM intended for restaurant employers and employees was developed and evaluated. The sanitation manual consisted of five principles: prevention of foodborne illness, personal hygiene, control of food production, instrument and equipment cleaning and sanitation, and management of environmental sanitation. The CD-ROM was composed of animations detailed real-life examples of Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, and Norovirus foodborned illness outbreaks; slides summarizing the five principles of the manual; and a poster entitled You can prevent foodborne illness listing and describing the principles. A 15 question evaluation survey was developed to gauge the efficacy of the animations. The survey was divided into five sections on comprehension of the instructions, content organization concerning understanding, content organization concerning the information presented, content organization concerning retention of interest (concentration), and recommendations concerning concentration. Ranked on a 5-point scale the survey produced a mean value of 3.80+/-0.39 and individual scores of 3.92+/-0.45 (learning instruction), 3.86+/-0.48 (understanding), 3.82+/-0.52 (information), 3.75+/-0.49 (concentration), and 3.67+/-0.58 (concentration-recommendation). Overall, evaluation results of the animation were good and easy to understand, with only a few respondents electing to watch the animations more than once. In terms of continuous and recurring education, sanitation training programs should be easy to learn and contain sufficient and specific examples of the importance of sanitation in achieving food safety.

9.The Creation of Dental Radiology Multimedia Electronic Textbook.

PURPOSE: This study was performed to develop the electronic textbook (CD-rom title) about preclinical practice of oral and maxillofacial radiology, using multimedia technology with interactive environment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After comparing the three authoring methods of multimedia, i.e. programming language, multimedia authoring tool and web authoring tool, we determined the web authoring tool as an authoring method of our electronic textbook. Intel Pentium II 350 MHz IBM-compatible personal computer with 128 Megabyte RAM, Umax Powerlook flatbed scanner with transparency unit, Olympus Camedia 1400L digital camera, ESS 1686 sound card, Sony 8 mm Handycam, PC Vision 97 pro capture board, Namo web editor 3.0, Photoshop 3.0, ThumbNailer, RealPlayer 7 basic and RealProducer G2 were used for creating the text document, diagram, figure, x-ray image, video and sound files. We made use of javascripts for tree menu structure, moving text bar, link button and spread list menu and image map etc.. After creating all files and hyperlinking them, we burned out the CD-rom title with all of the above multimedia data, Netscape communicator and plug in program as a prototype. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: We developed the dental radiology electronic textbook which has 9 chapters and consists of 155 text documents, 26 figures, 150 x-ray image files, 20 video files, 20 sound files and 50 questions with answers. We expect that this CD-rom title can be used at the intranet and internet environments and continuous updates will be performed easily.

10.Development of Cardiology Education System Using World Wide Web.

OBJECTIVES: Few disciplines in medicine encompasses such wide diagnostic and treatment modalities as cardiology. A traditional text and education system is limited in its efficacy to convey such variety. In order to address this problem, a comprehensive computer-aided education system that compiles and links the current knowledge of cardiovascular diseases is proposed. An availability of such system through CD-ROM and world wide web will contribute undoubtedly to the promotion and betterment of current understandings of cardiology all over the world. METHODS AND RESULTS:1) The information about the cardiovascular diseases has been complied and organized. Multimedia medical information includes text, audio features that allow the users to study actual sounds, and visual aids (slides, real-time demonstration, and schematic illustrations).2) Cardiology education system can be approached according to "Disease module" or "Laboratory test module". One can readily look up the disease of interest and see the results of different tests. Or one can choose the laboratory test or physical examination and study the differences among the diseases. "Self test module" is also available to help user's self assessment of his/her understanding of cardiovascular diseases.3) This cardiology education program is conveniently stored in CD-ROM and can also be accessible through the world wide web (http://med.chungbuk.ac.kr/~mccho/ web-cardiology/alogo.html). CONCLUSION: A multimedia approach for the study of cardiovascular diseases has been developed and is now avaliable in CD-ROM. The same information can be obtained from our home page through the world wide web.
