Korean Journal of Gynecologic Oncology and Colposcopy 1996;7(4):283-290
Prognosis and biologic behavior of malignant ovarian tumors have been assessed by clinical staging, morphological grading and many other variables. Recently DNA ploidy measured by flow cytometry has been suggested as an additional important indicator of the tumor behavior and prognosis. The author measured DNA ploidy, S-phase fraction and DNA Index in 36 patients of epithelial ovarian tumors(17 were malignant, and 19 were borderline) by flow cytometric analysis of paraffin embedded tumor blocks. Comparing with FIGO stage, tumor grade, histologic type and others, the author investigated the clinical significance of the results of flow cytometric analysis. Small ovarian cysts(<0.7 cm in diameter) are common in prepubertal children. Occasionally larger cysts occur in young girls with isosexual incomplete precocious puberty in the absence of LH and FSH elevation. The mechanism of production of these autonomous functioning cysts is unknown. A 3 year 6 month-old girl was referred to our department of pediatrics because of severe vaginal bleeding. On examination, she was tall and had breast enlargement of Tanner stage II. On hormonal study, FSH(0.38mIU/ml) was suppressed and estradiol(62.2pg/ml) was markedly elevated, and GnRH stimulation failed to evoke an increase in gonadotropin. Bone age was advanced. Pelvic ultrasonography showed both huge ovarian cysts. Brain MRI showed no abnormalities. We underwent both ovarian cystectomy and histological examination showed follicular cyst in left ovary and luteal cyst in right ovary. After ovarian cystectomy vaginal bleeding stopped and hormonal abnormalities were normalized. We report a case of autonomous ovarian cysts presenting severe vaginal bleeding treated with ovarian cystectomy.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase(G6PD) deficiency is the most common X- linked inherited disorder and is estimated to affect 400 million people worldwide. But the incidence of this disease is very rare in far-east Asia, especially in Korea. Many drugs and infections cause hemolytic anemia in patients with G6PD deficiency. We experienced a case of G6PD deficiency with chronic hepatitis B. The diagnosis was made by clinical symptoms, laboratory data including serologic test and bone marrow findings. We report a case of G6PD with chronic hepatitis with a brief review of related literatures.
