1.An immunohistochemical study of plasma fibronectin expression in basal cell carcinoma.

Previous observations have demonstrated that fibronectia (FN) is deposited high abundance in basal cell carcinoma (BCC) stroma. Since FN is a glycoprotein which promotes interaction between cells and extracellular matrix, it may been important component of slowly expansile carcinoma such as BCC. Furthermore, BCCs aggressiveness varies with it's histologic appearance. The authors investigated distribution of plasma FN (pFN) in 8 BCC cases with various histologic types (3 nodulocystic type, 2 infiltrative type, 2 keracotic type, 1 adenoid type) and 4 squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), which have a more aggrcisive biologic behavior than BCC using immunohistochemical staining. In normal skin, pFN was strongly positive at the clenzoepidermal junction and perivascular area with a linear pattern, and in the papillary dermis with a reticular pattern, and was weakly positive in the reticular dermis. In BCC, pFN was strongly positive in nodulocystic BCC, with the highest concentration along the periphery of the tumor island in a filamentous pattern, .hereas, it was moderately positive in adenoid, keratotic, infiltrative BCC stroma. In SCC, pFN was weakly positive around tumor the margins with a thin, coarse deposition These results show that with epidermal tumors, the degree of the pFN expression in stroma is propotional to their aggressiveness.

3.Clinical Observations of Pediatric Inpatients: Morbidity and Mortality.

This paper represents the clinical observations including the causes of admission and of deaths in pediatric age admitted during Jan. 1971 to Dec. 1975, into the pediatric ward of St. Paul's Hospital, Catholic Medical College located in the east zone of Seoul, covering the middle socio-economical classes in the regional and suburban populations. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Total admissions during 5 year-period were 2005, with the ratio of male to female 1.63/1. 2. In age distribution, the neonates and the infants less than 1year of age occupied 47.5%of total admissions and 65.9% of total deaths. 3. Major leading diseases of admission were bronchitis and pneumonia, gastroenteritis, pre-maturity, tuberculosis and upper respiratory tract infections, in order of incidence. 4. Total deaths were 129 and the mortality rate was 6.4%. 5. Major leading causes of deaths were pneumonia, pre-maturity, tuberculosis, septicemia, in order of incidence. The diseases of higher fatality rate were idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome, septicemia, encephalitis and encephalopathy, birth trauma and heart disease. 6. The death occurred within 48 hours after admission was 65.9% of total deaths.

4.Expression of Apoptosis, bcl-2, and PCNA in Uterine Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia and Invasive Carcinoma.

This study was undertaken to know the extent of apoptosis, expression of bcl-2 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in uterine cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN; 15 cases) and invasive carcinoma (27 cases) and to evaluate them as a prognostic marker. Apoptosis was analysed by using the in situ apoptosis detection kit and bcl-2 and PCNA were detected by the immunohistochemical method. The results were as follows: Apoptotic indices (AI) in the invasive carcinoma (mean: 4.3) were 10-times higher than that in the CIN (mean: 0.43). Bcl-2 was expressed 60% of the cases in the dysplastic cells of the CIN II and CIN III, 33.3% of cases in the invasive carcinoma and not expressed in the CIN I except basal cells. The expression of the PCNA was increased by the grades of CIN and was strong in invasive carcinoma. The mean survival time of the patient with invasive carcinoma was significantly decreased in the higher AI index (above 4.3) than in the lower AI index (below 4.3). There was no significant correlation between the extent of apoptosis and the expression of bcl-2. According to the above results, AI are able to be used as an independent prognostic marker in the invasive cervical carcinoma, and bcl-2 and PCNA have an important role in the tumorigenesis of uterine cervical carcinoma.

5.Embolization of gastroduodenal artery pseudoaneurysm caused by chronic pancreatitis: a case report.

Pseudoaneurysm due to chronic pancreatitis is uncommon, but it can cause recurrent and massive hemorrhage. Because of high morbidity and mortality associated with the pseudoaneurysm, early detection and treatment is essential. Surgical ligation or resection of the aneurysm has a high mortality and therefore, transcatheter embolization is preferably carried out. We report a case in which gastroduodenal artery pseudoaneurysm caused by chronic pancreatitis was successfully treated by transcatheter embolization using Gelfoam and Gianturco spring coils.

6.Two Cases of Reye's Syndrome.

Two cases of Reye's syndrome in an age of 14months and a 3 years female were observed. The laboratory findings revealed increased SGPT, SGOT and hypoglycemia, respectively. Clinical findings were also compatable with this syndrome. In one case, liver biopsy revealed fatty infiltration of the liver cells. A brief review of related literatures was presented.

9.Granulocyte Macrophage-Colony Stimulating Factor Signaling in Development of Mouse Embryos.

OBJECTIVE Present study was aimed to verify the effect of granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) in the preimplantation development of mouse embryos and the involvement of the mitogen activated protein kiase (MAPK) in the GM-CSF signaling. METHODS: Two-cell embryos were cultured for 96 h in the presence or absence of GM-CSF (0, 0.4, 2, 10 ng/ml) and PD98059, a MEK inhibitor (10 muM). Morphological development, cell number per blastocyst, and apoptotic nuclei, were eamined. MAPK activity of embryonic immunoprecipitate by MAPK (ERK1/2) antibody was measured by in vitro phosphorylation of myelin basic protein. RESULTS: At post hCG 122 h the embryonic development among the experimental groups was significantly different (p=0.018). The rate of blastocyst development and cell number per embryo were the highest in 2 ng/ml GM-CSF treatment group. The percent of apoptotic cells of the GM-CSF-treated embryos was the lowest among the group. in blastocysts, GM-CSF treatment transiently increased MAPK activity. PD098059 attenuated the effect of GM-CSF on the morphological development, increase in cell number per blastocyst, down regulation of apoptosis, and upregulation of MAPK activity, suggesting that activation of MAPK cascade possibly mediated the embryotropic effect of GM-CSF. CONCLUSION: This result suggested that GM-CSF potentiated the development of preimplantation mouse embryos by activation of MAPK.

10.Field survey on the freshwater snails in Cheju Province(Quelpart lsland), Korea: Especially on presence or not of Parafossarulus manchouricus.

The question of infectivity and prevalence of Clonorchis sinensis in Cheju province (Quelpart Island) was arisen to authors since the several surveys on the endemic diseases were performed in this island. Therefore, authors decided to solute this question. Then the survey on the possible second intermediate host of Clonorchis sinensis was performed and reported already with negative finding. At present time, authors carried out the collection of all kinds of fresh-water snails through all areas of this island, to confirm the presence or not of Parafossarulus manchouricus, the only first intermediate host of Clonorchis sinensis in Korea . And the following results were obtained. The fresh-water snails collected in the survey were Semisulcospira libertina Gould and Lymnaea ollula Gould. Parafossarulus manchouricus Bourguigant was not collected in this island. It is confirmed that the Clonorchis sinensis can not be prevalent in this island.
