To localize glycoconjugates of surface mucous cells, mucous neck cells and chief cells in the developing rat, nine of biotinylated lectin(SBA, DBA, PNA, BSL-1, RCA-1, sWGA, UEA-1, Con A and LCA) were applied with ABC method. In the surface and gastric pit epithelium of body of the stomach, DBA affinity was not demonstrated. Although Con A and LCA affinity were slightly increased after birth, these affinities with RCA-1 and sWGA maintained constantly from fetal to adult rat. And UEA-1 affinity gradually increased from the end of suckling period. BSL-1 and PNA affinity showed a tendency to decrease and was not observed in most cells from the suckling and weanling period respectively. In the gastric gland proper, mucous neck cells and chief cells were not distinguished until the early weanling period. All affinities examined except DBA and BSL-1 were observed and increased in the gland of postnatal rat. With the approach of weanling period, more intense affinity for PNA, RCA-1, sWGA and UEA-1 were found on lower portion of the gastric gland proper and more intense affinity for SBA on upper portion. The mucous neck cells showed a similar affinities as gastric gland proper from the weanling period and two affinities for PNA and Con A were detected in the chief cell.

PURPOSE: Although many useful articles appear in the journals published in Korea, they are not always cited by researchers mainly due to absence of efficient searching system. The authors made a program with 6 predefined filtering forms to detect published articles rapidly and accurately. MATERIALS: The program was coded using database management system CA-Clipper Version 5.2 (Computer Associates International, Inc.) through preliminary work for 1 year. We used 486 DX II (8 Mbyte RAM, VGA, 200 MByte Hard Disk), Ink-jet Printer (Hewlett Packard Company), and MS-DOS Version 5.0 (Microsoft Co.). We inputed total of 1986 articles published in the Journal of the Korean Radiological Society from 1981 to 1993. METHODS AND RESULTS: The searching time was 10 to 15 seconds for each use. We had very flexible user interfaces and simplified searching methods, but more complicated filterings could also be performed. CONCLUSION: Although the previous version have had some bugs, this upgrade version resolved the problems and fitted in searching articles. The program would be valuable for radiologist in searching articles published not only in the Journal of the Korean Radiological Society, but also in the Journal of the Korean Society of Medical Ultrasound and the Korean Journal of Nuclear Medicine.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the characteristic CT and MR findings in persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous(PHPV) and to compare the detectability of those findings in each modality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated CT and MR findings in 32 patients with PHPV. Twenty-five patients had CT, 13 patients had MR, and 6 patients had both CT and MR. RESULTS: Major findings of PHPV in 32 patients on both imaging modalities were lens deformity(78%), shallow anterior chamber(72%), heterogeneous vitreous opacity(72%), enhancing hyaloid artery or remnant of fibrotic hand(69%), and microophthalmos(67%). Minor findings were retinal detachment(22%), and vitreous hemorrhage(6%). In MRI, lens deformity(92%) and shallow anterior chamber(85%) were detected most commonly whereas in CT, opaque vitreous(80%) was the most common finding. Findings of enhancing hyaloid vessel or remnant of fibrotic band, considered characteristic of PHPV, were more commonly detectable in MR (85%) than CT(52%). CONCLUSION: Characteristic MR and CT findings of PHPV were lena deformity, shallow anterior chanber, heterogeneons vitreons opacity, enhanciny hgalind artery or remnant fibrotic band, and microphthalmos. MR seemed to be more useful than CT in detecting Globe pathology.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this research is to introduce the unique approach of the Catholic Medical Center (CMC) integrate network hospitals with organizational and technical methodologies adopted for seamless implementation. METHODS: The Catholic Medical Center has developed a new hospital information system to connect network hospitals and adopted new information technology architecture which uses single source for multiple distributed hospital systems. RESULTS: The hospital information system of the CMC was developed to integrate network hospitals adopting new system development principles; one source, one route and one management. This information architecture has reduced the cost for system development and operation, and has enhanced the efficiency of the management process. CONCLUSIONS: Integrating network hospital through information system was not simple; it was much more complicated than single organization implementation. We are still looking for more efficient communication channel and decision making process, and also believe that our new system architecture will be able to improve CMC health care system and provide much better quality of health care service to patients and customers.

To examine the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) on central nociceptive modulation, expressional changes of spinal neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) were investigated in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-injected rats. Inflammation was induced by an intraplantar injection of CFA into the hindpaw of male Sprague-Dawley rats. Bilateral EA stimulation at 2 Hz, 15 Hz and 120 Hz was applied at those acupoints corresponding to Zusanli and Sanyinjiao in man with 3-day intervals for 30 days. At 30 days after CFA-injection, effects of EA on nNOS expression were observed in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord using immunohistochemical methods. The mean integrated optical density of nNOS immunoreaction was significantly increased in the dorsal horn throughout L1 to L5 lumbar segments in CFA-injected rats. The nNOS expression was attenuated in all regions of the dorsal horn by all types of EA. Especially, these reaction was markedly decreased in the superficial laminae and nucleus proprius of L1 and L3 lumbar segments by three types of EA, but a marked decrease in the neck of the dorsal horn was observed only in 2 Hz stimulation. The marked decrease of nNOS also showed in nucleus proprius and the neck of L5 lumbar segments in 2 Hz and 15 Hz EA stimulated rats. It is concluded that EA treatment can attenuate chronic inflammatory process in CFA-injected rats through modulating expression of nNOS in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVES: We report event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI) methodology to investigate human brain activity during motor imagery. METHODS: A 1.5 Tesla clinical MR scanner was used in the acquisition of a series of T2* weighted MR images covering the whole brain. Blood oxygenation level-dependent(BOLD) signal changes associated with the imagery event were subsequently detected while healthy right-handed subjects imagined clenching of a right hand cued by auditory stimulus. RESULTS: Group analysis across nine right-handed subjects revealed activations in the medial and superior frontal gyri, cuneus, insula, middle/superior temporal gyri, and anterior cingulate gyri. Bilateral primary motor, premotor and supplementary motor areas exhibited event-related MR signal changes. Although unilateral hand clenching was imagined, bilateral activation of eloquent motor areas was observed. The proposed method also allowed for the visualization of subcortical areas, such as putamen, globus pallidus and thalamus, responsive to the event of motor imagery. CONCLUSION: The major cortical and subcortical areas in the motor pathways were identified and visualized during motor imagery event. Our results suggest that motor imagery and actual movement share common neural substrates.

Objective: Scalp lacerations are mostly treated with primary closure using staplers in the emergency department. This study examined the complications of patients who underwent scalp laceration closure with staplers over the past 5 years to identify the risk factors and indications for stapler closure. Methods: Patients who visited the emergency department with scalp lacerations registered in the electrical medical records of the author’s hospital (2018-2022) were included. All included cases were categorized into two groups: patients without revision (group A) and with wound revision (group B). The general characteristics and the factors associated with complications (e.g., prior medical history and the length and location of wounds) were investigated. Results: Among 794 emergency department and outpatient clinic visits, 751 and 42 patients were in groups A and B, respectively. The odds for revision were affected by wound length (odds ratio [OR]=3.996; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.905-8.383). The odds for revision were higher in a drunken state (OR=1.431; 95% CI, 0.686-2.984) and loss of consciousness (OR=1.629; 95% CI, 0.750-3.539). The prior medical history and wound location did not show a significant relationship with an increased risk of revision. Conclusion Scalp lacerations of 5 cm or more should be sutured using sutures rather than staplers, and additional research is needed on other factors that may cause complications.

The authors developed a computerized documentation system to record and store all the data pertaining to an endoscopic examination of the upper digestive tract. The system was programmed using the database management system Clipper Version 5.01. It is easy and convenient to use due to advanced deaign of input screen using menu bars and pull down menu and windows. The system was designed to permit the easy storage and retrieval of data by personnel who lack computer skills and who may only have limited typing ability. Today this system has been in daily use for 1 year at the endoscopic units of 8 different branch hospitals of Catholic university,medical college. Overall the experience in these centers has been positive, with excelient or good participation. Characteristics of this system are a menu-driven system, data input by predefined list, instantaneous report generation, on line access to previous examination, late entry of yathologic regerts. and record retrieval, listing according to different criteria. For the description of endoscopic findings and diagnosis, structured input is maintained. All of the findings are chosen from predefined list using pop-up screen and also free text typing is allowed. Therefore time effort was not increased compared to conventional documentation. Structured input and the resulting categorical data affer several advantages.
