3.Swollowed Pills Resembling Urinary Stone.

On various abdominal X-ray examination, 4 cases of stone-like shadow over kidney area due to swallowed pills were found. Twenty four kinds of tablets in country were investigated in their radiopacity. The causes of these shadows were mainly due to mineral contents(iron, calcium etc.)and coating substances of these tablets. The differentiation between these shadows and the true upper urinary stone can be made easily on the X-ray film with their history and the shape of shadows.

6.Species Identification of Coagulase Negative Staphylococci by Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism of Heat Shock Protein 60 Gene.

BACKGROUND: An accurate and rapid method for specise identification of coagulase negative staphylococci(CNS) has been increasingly necessary for the clinical significance and planning the management of patients with staphylococcal infections. Recently, it has been reported that there is a highly conserved area on their 60KDa heat shock protein(HSP60) gene sequences between the interspecies of CNS and it can be amplified by a set of universal degenerate primer. This led us our attention to focus on whether the PCR-based RFLP method using Mse / restriction enzyme could be a useful tool for the species identification of CNS. METHODS: In the present study, we performed PCR-based RFLP analysis using a set of degenerate primers covering HSP60 and Mse / restriction enzyme on the reference strains and 25 clinical isolates(10 of S. epidermidis, 10 of S. haemolyticus, 4 of S. lugdunensis and 1 of S. warneri) which were previously identified by the API-STAPH, Vitek GPI card and/or with conventional biochemical test. RESULT: All the seven reference strains revealed that each strain has a distinct electrophoresed band patterns with combination of different number (up to 8) and size of fragments. And these distinct band patterns showed remarkable concordance with the seven reference strains and 25 clinical isolates. CONCLUSION: These result strongly suggest that the PCR-RFLP method using degenerate primers covering the HSP60 gene and Mse / digestion enzyme offer a convenient and accurate tool for species-specific identification of CNS.

7.CT findings of polymorphic reticulosis: 5 case reports.

Five cases of histologically proven polymorphic reticulosis were examined with computed tomography(CT). CT findings were mucosal thickening along the septal and lateral walls of the nasal cavities(n=4), obliteration of the contour of the nasopharynx(n=4), involvement of the paranasal sinuses (n=2), destruction of the nasal septum and/or sinus walls(n=3) and mass in the palate, tonsil or neck (n=1). CT examination was helpful in determining the extent of the disease in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. However, lesions in the palate and tonsils could not be easily evaluated with CT. CT findings of polymorphic reticulosis are nonspecific and granulomatous diseases may show similar CT findings.

9.Electromyographicanalysis of prevalence and characteristics of radiculopathy in Parkinson’s disease

Background & Objectives: To determine the prevalence and characteristics of radiculopathy in
Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients through electrodiagnostic tests, to assess associated radicular pain
characteristics,and to investigate the relationship between pain and other clinical manifestations of PD.
Methods: Electrodiagnostic testing including nerve conduction studies and needle electromyographywas
performed to investigate comorbid peripheral neuropathy or radiculopathy. All patients were asked
to complete aquality of life (QOL) measurement related to pain. Results: Thirty-two (39%) of 82
PD patients had radiculopathy based on electrodiagnostic testing. 46.9% with radiculopathy patients
had involvement of multiple roots level. The most commonly involved root was L5 (83.3%). Patients
with radiculopathy had longer PD durations (p=0.011) and higher posture-related axial scores on the
UPDRS scale (p=0.017).There was a trend for pain in the leg and low back to occur more frequently
in PD patients with radiculopathy. QOL is not significantly different according to the presence of
radiculopathy in PD.
Conclusions: This study demonstrates a high prevalence of radiculopathy, particularly multiple root
involvement, and is correlated with pain complaints and with axial motor scores on UPDRS. These
findings might be related to increased shear force at the intervertebral disc by axial rigidity and flexed
posture in PD along with the duration and severity of PD disease course.

10.A Clinical Study of the Tibial Condylar Fracture

The knee joint is one of the major weight bearing joint in the body, and is frequently injured because of its complex motion despite of a simple bony architecture. In the fracture of the tibial condyle the injuries of soft tissues such as ligaments and menisci are frectuently accompanied, and the weight bearing surface is involved. So it often produces a disability of the knee joint. Forty-seven consecutive cases of the tibial condylar fracture treated at the orthopaedic department of the Hallym Medical College from 1982 to 1985 have been analyzed according to its type, radiologic diagnosis, treatment, and end results. The conclusions are; 1. The tomography is important in the decision of the treatment method by the accurate measurement of the extent of depression and displacement. 2. The poor results are usually caused by a severe comminution and some associated injuries such as menisus tear, open wound, and rupture of ligamentum patellae etc. 3. The better results can be obtained with the treatment of early exercise within 6 weeks, of weight bearing between 12-20 weeks, and in surgical cases, within 2 weeks and with a bone graft.
