Although rare, agranulocytosis is the most serious, potentially fatal side effect of antithyroid drug. We experienced a 13-year-old girl who developed methimazole-induced agranulocytosis at 1 month after the initiation of treatment. Her granulocyte count recovered after discontinuation of methimazole and treatment with broad spectrum-antibiotics, G-CSF, and methylprednisolone. After recovery from agranulocytosis she was treated with radioiodine ablation therapy. Early detection and proper management of antithyroid drug-induced agranulocytosis is very important.

Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1993;29(2):244-248
To differentiate amebic and pyogenic liver abscesses, sonography(US) and CT findings of 21 amebic and 22 pyogenic liver abscesses were reviewed retrospectively. US was performed in all cases and CT in 15 cases of each group. Eleven cases of amebic abscesses had well defined margin which was observed in 10 cases of pyogenic abscessed. Amebic abscesses showed hyperechoic wall in 7 cases and calcification in 4 cases. Ten cases of pyogenic abscesses had mearby intrahepatic duct dilatation which was observed in 2 cases of amebic abscesses. Pneumobilia was seen in 6 cases of pyogenic abscesses. US findings of clear margin and hyperechoic wall, and CT findings of intrahepatic duct dilatation, pneumobilia, and calcification were helpful in differentation of amebic pyogenic liver abscesses.

5.The Effect of Alginic Acid Sodium Salt on Delayed Adjustable Strabismus Surgery.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2000;41(7):1493-1498
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the alginic acid sodium salt on the delayed adjustable strabismus surgery by preventing the post operative tissue adhesion. 30 eyes of 15 rabbits had received an adjustable suture surgery. The alginic acid sodium salt of 4% was used during operation in 16 eyes among them by injecting it around the muscle, between the sclera and the conjunctiva. In the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, and 14th day postoperatively, we measured the pulling forces and the moving distances of the muscles during the adjustment. Then the eyes were enucleated and the histopathologic changes of the eyes were determined using the light microscope. The pulling forces and the moving distances of the muscles during the adjustment were significantly different between the alginic acid sodium salt free group and the alginic acid sodium salt used group. In the alginic acid sodium salt used group, the pulling forces were decreased and the moving distances were increased than those of the alginic acid sodium salt free group. The light microscopic examination showed more fibrosis in the alginic acid sodium salt free group than in the alginic acid sodium salt used group. These results suggest that the alginic acid sodium salt is an effective substance for the delayed adjustable suture surgery.

7.Refractive state in Adult with Normal Visual Acuity.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1991;32(1):78-82
Visual acuity refers to the spatial limit of visual discrimination. It is surely the single most significant measure of functional integrity of the eye. Normal visual acuity can be represented in hyperopia of less than 2 diopters or astigmatism of less than 1 diopter. The purpose of this study was to observe the prevalence, type and degree of of refractive errors in 338 eyes of 40-69 years of age with normal visual acuity(20/20 or more). The results were as follows: 1. In objective manifest refraction, 246 eyes(72.8%) had refractive error such as hyperopia(110 eyes), simple hyperopic astgmatism(61 eyes),compound hyperopic astigmatism(57 eyes) and simple myopic astigmatism(18 eyes). 2. In subjective manifest refraction, 132 eyes(39.1%) had refractive error such as hyperopia(51 eyes), simple hyperopic astigmatism(44 eyes), simple myopic astigmatism(24 eyes) and compound hyperopic astigmatism(13 eyes). 3. As to the type of astigmatism, 71 of 81 astigmatism were "against the rule" and the rest(10 eyes) "with the rule". Degree of astigmatism was less than 1.00 diopter. 4. A verage degree of refractive errors was 0.43 diopter.

9.The Surgical Results According to the Amount of Superior Rectus Recession for Dissociated Vertical DeviationDVD.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2000;41(5):1236-1241
To evaluate the surgical results of superior rectus recession with different amount according to the degree of eyeball deviation. We reviewed the surgical records of 36 eyes in 23 patients who had undergone superior rectus recession and followed up for at least 6 months.Patients were divided into 3 groups according to the degree of deviation : Group 1[8-10PD, 4.0 mm recession], Group 2[11-20PD, 6.0 mmrecession], Group 3[21PD or greater, 8.0 mmrecession].Five PD or less after operation was regarded as acceptable. The success rate of Group 1 was 86.6%at the 6th month, 87.5% at the 12th month, and 83.8%at the 24th onth, respectively. In group 2 those were 87.5%, 75%, and 80%, respectively. In group 3 those were 60%, 50%, and 50%, respectively. The overall success rate as 83.3%at the 6th month, 75% at the 12th month, 75%at the 24th month. These results indicate that superior rectus recession with the different amount according to the degree of eyeball deviation is effective for the deviation under 20PD but not over 21PD.

Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1994;31(6):1143-1147
PURPOSE: The differentiation between renal cell carcinoma(RCC) and transitional cell carcinoma(TCC) is important due to the different methods of treatment and prognosis. But occasionally it is difficult to draw a distinction between the two diseases when renal parenchyme and renal collecting systems are invaded simultaneously. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We reviewed CT scans of 37 cases of renal cell carcinoma and 12 cases of transitional cell carcinoma which showed involvement of renal parenchyma and renal sinus fat on CT. Retrospective analysis was performed by 3 abdominal radiologists. Check points were renalcontour bulging or reniform shape, location of mass center, intact parenchyme overlying the tumor, cystic change, calcification, LN metastasis, vessel invasion, and perirenal extention. RESULT:There were renal contour bulging due to the tumor mass in 33 out of 37 cases of renal cellcarcinima, wherea and nine of 12 cases of transitional cell carcinoma maintained the reniform appearance. This is significant statiscal difference between the two(p<0.005). Center of all TCCs were located in the renal sinus, and 24 out of 35 cases of RCC were located in the cortex(p<0.005). Thirty-six out of 37 cases of RCC lost the overlying parenchyma, whereas 4 out of 9 cases of well enhanced TCC had intact overlying parenchyma(p<0.005) RCC showed uptic change within the tumor mags in 31 cases which was significanity higher than the 4 cases in TCC(p<0.05). CONCLUSION: CT findings of renal cell carcinoma are contour bulging, peripheral location, obliteration of parenchyma, and cystic change. Findings of transitional cell carcinoma are reniform appearance, central location within the kidney, intact overlying parenchyma, and rare cystic change.
