1.Hair Casts : A Clinical and Morphologic Study in School Children.

BACKGROUND: Hair casts(HGs) is a disorder of asymptomatic, firm yellowish white, freely movable accretions which encircles but is not attatched to the hairs. There are two types of HC:The first type, parakeratotic HC, is frequently associated with parakeratotic scalp disorders;the second type, the peripilar keratin casts, in an uncommon type not usually associated with diseases of the scalp and has only been reported in female children. The pathophysiology and origin of HC is poorly understood with only 37 cases reported in the literature. @ ES OBJECTIVE: our pupose was to establish the prevalence of hair cast in schoold children and to determine the predisposing factors of hair casts in Korea. METHODS: Five hundred and thirty-seven students of elementary schools(274male, 263female) were examined. Samples of plucked hair were stained with 4-dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde and examined under light microscopes. RESULTS: There were 182 patients with HC;Peripilar keratin casts:174(CRSC 165, ERSC 7, IRSC 2); paakeratotic HC:8. In a total of 182 patients with HC, 181 were girls and the incidence of HC in female children was 68.8%(181/263). In girls who tie up or weave their hair, the incidence of peripilar keratin casts was as high as 81.8%(171/209). CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that the traction to the hair follicle may play a role in the generation of HC, and that peripilar keratin casts are not rare in Korea.

2.Modified Weaver and Dunn Technique in the Treatment of Acromioclavicular Separation

Thirty one cases of acromioclavicular injuries were treated in both Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital and Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital during the period from May 1974 to April 1981. Three cases were classified to type 2 injuries and twenty eight were type 3. Among 31 cases one of the type 2 injuries was treated with closed reduction followed by thoracobrachial cast and remaining thirty received surgical treatment. Twenty one cases were operated on by technique of Weaver and Dunn, 8 cases by modified Phemister method and one case by Stewart technique. Preperative and postoperative stress film were evaluated and cap the coracoclavicular distance were measured. In twelve complete dislocation the authors modified the original Weaver and Dunn procedure by taking a bone chip along with the acromial end of the coracoacromial ligament. This seemed to provide a strong bony fulcrum for the suture of the ligament to clavicle as well as promoting bone to bone union. The results of this modified procedure were excellent.

7.Association of Schizophrenia with Pathological Aging : A Behavioral and Histological Study Using Animal Model.

OBJECTIVES: Phencyclidine(PCP) or PCP-like substances such as ketamine have been know to rekindle the cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia. The aims of this study were to identify whether PCP-like substances can produce cognitive deficit in schizophrenia, to discuss relation with aging process, and finally to speculate underlying neurochemical mecha-nisms by various drug responses. METHODS: In experiment I, radial maze tests were done in 24 Sprague-Dawley rats for 3 days to get baseline data. Being divided into 4 groups(6 rats respectively) of normal aged, normal adult controls, atropine-treated and ketamine-treated, the radial maze tests were repeated on every week for 6 weeks, and then the rats were sacrificed by intracardiac perfusion with phosphate-buffered 10% formaldehyde solution for histology. The brain specimen was stained with hematoxylin-eosin to count cells in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. In experiment II, radial maze tests were done for 48 rats before any drug treatment and only after ketamine administration. Thereafter, haloperidol, bromocriptine, clonidine, nimodipine, tacrine, valproic acid, naloxone and fluoxetine were intramuscularly injected on every other day in addition to ketamine. Radial maze tests were repeated on every week for 6 weeks, and then rats were prepared by the same procedure for histology. RESULTS: 1) Reaction times of radial maze tests of atropine-treated rats were significantly prolonged than those of normal aged(p<0.05) or normal adult controls(p<0.05). Cell numbers of prefrontal cortex & hippocampus in ketamine-treated rats were significantly reduced than those in normal aged(p<0.05) or normal adult controls(p<0.005). 2) Reduced cell numbers by ketamine became significantly raised by tacrine administration in prefrontal cortex $ hippocampus(p<0.05), while there were no significant changes on radial maze test. Cell numbers also tended to be raised by nimodipine, fluoxetine and haloperidol administration. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the visuospatial memory disorders in ketamine-induced psychotic rats might be partly associated with aging process. Furthermore, the responses to the various drugs suggested cholinergic system might have an important role in the neurochemical mechanism of the cognitive dysfunction in ketamine-induced psychosis. Otherwise, calcium metabolism as well as serotonergic and dopaminergic systems seemed to be possibly related.

8.A Study of Tibio

The object of this study was 336 Korean patients with degenerative arthritic knees and 1000 Koreans with normal knees who had visited the department of orthopaedic surgery of Hanyang University hospital during the period fmm January, 1980 to June, 1981. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of tibio-femoral angles and metaphysealdia physeal angles in response to the degenerative changes of the knees. By the roentgenogram, tibio-femoral angles and metaphyseal-diaphyseal angles were measured and those angles were analized statistically. The results were as follows 1. In young age group, the incidence of the degenerative arthritic knees was more frequent in male than in female. However, in the middle and older age groups, the incidence was higher in female than in male. 2. The mean value of tibio-femoral angle of the degenerative arthritic knees was −3.41°±0.22. It was about 1° varus compared with the normal mean value of −4.46°±0.27. The mean value of tibio-femoral angle in normal Korean was reduced appmximately 3°±5°valgus compared with the Westem normal peoples: 3. In general, the valgus tendency appeared a little more in the knees of female than in those of male. 4. The varus tendency was in pmportion to the degree of the aggrevation of the degenerative arthritis in the knees. 5. The mean value of metaphyseal-diaphyseal angle in normal Korean was 3.53°±0.24. It was 3°–4° varus compared with the Western normal peoples. 6.The varus was increased more in the standing position, in the state of weight bearing position, than in the supine position.

10.Four Cases of Angiolipoma.

The angiolipoma is well circumscribed, benign neoplasm, composed of mature fat cells and well developed arterioles, venules and capillaries, in which fibrin thrombi often form. We experienced 4 adult male patients who had free movable, subcutaneous nodular masses on the upper extremities, the abdomen, the back and the buttock. All of them were confirmed as angiolipoma by the clinical and histopathological findings.
