Chinese Traditional and Herbal Drugs 2014;45(5):709-713
Objective: To explore the effect of different culture conditions on protocorm-like bodies (PLBs) of Dendrobium candidum in bioreactor culture. Methods: Inoculation quantity, ventilation, sucrose concentration, and light intensity were taken to carry out the single factor experiment design. Biomass was determined by drying method, polysaccharide content by phenol-sulfuric acid method, and SPSS16.0 software was used for data analysis. Results: Under the bioreactor culture, the nutrient medium components for the PLBs proliferation of D. candidum and polysaccharide accumulation were 1/2 MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/L NAA, 5% coconutmilk, and 3% sucrose, pH value was 6.0. The culture conditions, such as inoculation with 40 g/L, 15 μm pore porous nozzle, aeration volumes by 1.0 and 0.5 L/min used alternately, and photon flux of 2000 lx could improve the proliferation coefficient and polysaccharide contents of PLBs. Conclusion: Different culture conditions have the significant effect on the growth of PLBs and the accumulation of polysaccharide. Suitable culture conditions have the very important practic significance to the biomass of PLBs and main medicinal ingredient production of PLBs.

OBJECTIVEThe aim of this study is to analyse the efficacy and toxicity of CEOP regimen in the treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL).
METHODSFrom January 1995 to December 2000, 121 patients with NHL were treated by CEOP regimen with or without radiotherapy for the involved field. The clinical characteristics, response, toxicity and long-term survival results were analysed retrospectively.
RESULTSOf these 121 patients, 83 (68.6%) had B-cell NHL and 38(31.4%) peripheral T or NK-cell NHL; 55. 4% (67/121) had early disease (stage I or II), and 89.3% (108/121) had IPI score 0-2. The median age was 53 years (range: 7-79 yr). All patients were treated by CEOP regimen (totally, 471 cycles) with or without radiotherapy. The overall response (OR) rate in this series was 90.9% (110/121) with a complete remission (CR) rate of 71.9% (87/121); whereas the response rate of chemotherapy alone was 88.4% (107/121) with a CR rate of 67.8% (82/121). Major toxicity consisted of grade III-IV myelosuppression (11.9%), neutropenia (1.9%) and thrombocytopenia and anemia (1.1%). Alopecia was observed in 46.3%. However, cardiotoxicity was mild and reversible. Median follow-up duration in this series was 63 months (range: 2-116 months). The overall 1-, 3- and 5-year survival rate was 84.8%, 62.7% and 55.9%, respectively, with a median survival time of 85 months (2-118 months).
CONCLUSIONOur data show that CEOP regimen combined with or without radiotherapy for the involved field is effective and well tolerated by the patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

OBJECTIVETo understand the national situation of quality and consumption of iodized salt at production and household levels.
METHODSDetailed surveillance method could be found in 'national iodized salt surveillance scheme', issued by MOH in 2004. The iodine concentrations in salt (except some special kinds of salt) were detected by direct titration with national standard of GB/T 13025.7-1999, in which the iodine content in qualified iodized salt was set as between 20 and 50 mg/kg and that in non-iodized salt was set as below 5 mg/kg.
RESULTSAt production level, the national lot qualified rate was 98.36% and all the provincial lot qualified rate of production level was over 90%. At household level, the national iodized salt coverage rate of household was 96.87% and the national qualified iodized salt coverage rate was 93.75%. 4 provinces (Tibet, Hainan, Xinjiang and Guangdong) had an iodized salt coverage rate lower than 90%. Further, the qualified iodized salt coverage rate of 5 provinces (Tibet, Hainan, Xinjiang, Guangdong and Qinghai) was below 90%. In 2006,80 counties did not conduct the iodized salt surveillance and non-iodized salt coverage rate of 185 counties was higher than 10%. In the respect of the qualified iodized salt coverage rate at household level, there were about 10 percent lagging behind the national goal that 95% of all the counties in China should achieve virtual elimination of iodine deficiency disorder before 2010.
CONCLUSIONAt national level, the lot qualified rate at production level and the iodized salt coverage rate at household level maintained comparatively well. However, at county level, there were 75 counties whose iodized salt coverage rate was below 70%.

Objective:To study the clinical characteristics of neonatal community-acquired Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Omicron variant infection. Methods:From March 30 to May 15, 2022, the epidemiological characteristics, clinical manifestations and outcomes of neonatal cases of community-acquired COVID-19 Omicron variant infection admitted to the isolation ward of our hospital were analyzed. Results:A total of 7 neonates infected with community-acquired COVID-19 Omicron variant were treated, including 3 males and 4 females. All of them were term infants with clear epidemiological exposure history. The infection was originated from caregivers of close contact (parents or babysitters). The main clinical symptoms was upper respiratory tract infection, including fever (6 cases), nasal congestion (6 cases), cough (5 cases), runny nose (2 cases), poor appetite (2 cases) and diarrhea (1 case). On admission, no abnormalities were found in blood routine examination and C-reactive protein (CRP). All but one case had normal serum amyloid A (SAA). No obvious abnormalities were found on chest X-ray. All patients were isolated in single-patient rooms after admission. They received standard symptomatic treatment and regular nucleic acid tests. The first negative nucleic acid results came on median 17 d(8~26 d) after the onset of the disease. The patients were discharged after two consecutive (24 h apart) nucleic acid tests with CT value ≥35 and continued health-monitor at home. On discharge, 5 patients had nasal congestion and 2 of them had cough. During the follow-up 4~6 weeks after discharge, all patients gradually recovered without positive nucleic acid results. Conclusions:All 7 neonates with community-acquired COVID-19 Omicron variant infection have epidemiological exposure history. The main clinical symptoms are long-lasting upper respiratory tract infections. It takes a relatively long time for the nucleic acid to turn negative, however, the overall short-term prognosis is good.

OBJECTIVETo study the influence of electromagnetic irradiation on cytochrome P450 cholesterol side chain lyase (P450scc) in adult rat testis tissues and to assess the protective effect of the copper shield.
METHODSHealthy male Wistar rats were randomized into a control group, an electromagnetic irradiation group and a wholly shielded group (with the copper shielding net). The electromagnetic irradiation group and the shielded group were set for 4 phases of 3, 6, 24 and 72 hours after irradiation, 15 rats for each phrase. The testosterone contents in the serum of the irradiated rats at 3, 6, 24 and 72 hours and in that of the controls were measured by radioimmunoassay(RIA), and so was the level of the P450scc mRNA in the testis tissues by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. And the effect of the copper shielding net on testosterone and P450scc mRNA was observed.
RESULTSThe contents of testosterone and the P450scc mRNA level in the irradiated group were significantly lower than in the control rats, decreased by 83.9% and 56.9% at 3 hours (P < 0.01), 54.8% and 27.3% at 6 hours (P < 0.01), restored to normal at 24 hours, but again reduced by 60.1% and 56.1% respectively (P < 0.01). While in the shielded group, no significant change was observed either in the testosterone of the serum or in the P450scc mRNA expression in the testis tissues.
CONCLUSIONElectromagnetic irradiation may affect the transcription of P450scc in adult rat Leydig cells and thereby decrease the testosterone synthesis. Whole-body shielding with the copper net may achieve satisfactory effect.

OBJECTIVEThis clinical study was designed to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of the combined regimen of docetaxel, 5-Fu and DDP (TPF) in the treatment of advanced or relapsed nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).
METHODSFifty-six patients with newly diagnosed or recurrent/metastatic NPC following chemotherapy or radiotherapy were enrolled. Both docetaxel and DDP were administered intravenously for 6 hours at the dose of 70 mg/m2 on D1. 5-Fu was given at a dose of 400-500 mg/m2 for 6 hours from D1 to D5. Dexamethasone was routinely administered before injection of docetaxel. This combination was repeated every 3 to 4 weeks, and continued for 4-6 cycles or until PD for the responders.
RESULTSFifty-one (91.1%) patients were evaluable for response assessment. The response rate for whole group was 72.5% (37/51) with a CR rate of 9.8% (5/51). The stable disease accounted for 17.6% (9/51). There were 17(30.4%) chemotherapy-naïve patients. The overall response rate in those was 82.4% with a CR rate of 29.4%. However, the response rate for previously treated patients was 64.7% without CR. Twelve patients had progressed disease, including 5 (8.9%) died of disease progression with a median follow-up of 11 month (ranged from 1 to 19 months). Totally, 196 courses of chemotherapy were administered. The major toxicity was myelosupression, nausea/vomiting. The incidence of leucopenia was 48% with 22.2% of these in NCI grade II or IV. But only 2 patients (3.6%) experienced leucopenia with a fever. Other mild toxicities including alopecia, asthenia, mucositis and diarrhea were also observed.
CONCLUSIONOur preliminary outcome shows docetaxel, 5-Fu and DDP combination is effective and safe for the patients with advanced or relapsed nasopharyngeal carcinoma. But further clinical study is warranted.
