1.Screening of fluorescent bacteria for growth promotion and biocontrol potential against Pyricularia oryzae on aerobic rice (MARDI Aerob 1)

Aims:
This study aimed to screen the plant growth-promoting fluorescent bacteria (FLB) which isolated from the healthy
rice rhizophere and to evaluate its biocontrol and growth promotion properties against Pyricularia oryzae on aerobic rice
seedling of MARDI Aerob 1.
Methodology and results:
King’s B agar with glycerol was used as the selective medium to isolate FLB from the
healthy rice rhizosphere soil. All FLB obtained were in vitro screened for antagonistic activities against P. oryzae using
dual culture, volatile substances and hydrogen cyanide productions. The potential FLB isolates were further evaluated
on rice seedling early growth promotion before identified using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. A total of 24 FLB were
isolated from the healthy rice rhizosphere soil in Setiu, Terengganu, Malaysia. Isolates: FLB4, FLB5, FLB7 and FLB10
scored the total of percentage inhibition radial growth (PIRG) values ranged 99.5-105.0%. Further seedling growth
promotion screening revealed that FLB4, FLB7 and FLB10 were significantly improved seedling growth with vigor index
of 378.32%, 461.53% and 335.60% over control (133.31%). 16S rRNA sequencing identified that FLB7 as Bacillus
subtilis and the FLB4 and FLB10 as Pseudomonas putida.
Conclusion, significance and impact of study
The selected FLB isolates (FLB4, FLB7 and FLB10) are potential to be
developed as biological control agents against P. oryzae with growth promoting property on aerobic rice seedling.

OBJECTIVETo explore breeding method and breed new varieties of Erigeron breviscapus.
METHODSuperior individual were selected from natural outcrossing population of E. breviscapus, lines and strains were established and selected and compared.
RESULTThe scutellarin contents of two E. breviscapus strains of 2003-15 and 2003-6 through line breeding were 3.21% and 3.01%, respectively, and increased 15.77% and 23.46% comparing with the control strain (QS-1), respectively, the yield increased 20.37% and 17.59%, scutellarin yield per hectare enhanced 39.31% and 44.82%.
CONCLUSIONNew varieties of E. breviscapus can be bred through lines breeding.

3.Research progress on mutation by spaceflight in medicinal plants breeding.

Space breeding in medicinal plants is special characteristics in China. Compared with other plants, in spite of a relatively small number, Medicinal plants have more obvious characteristics and advantages. Research on medicinal plants has also been carried into all aspects, such as biological traits, physiology and biochemistry, genomics, as well as differences in chemical composition, and chemical composition analysis is also involved. However, compared with other plants, especially crops and vegetables, biological research is an obvious deficiency, that is mainly reflected in the insufficient genetics and breeding researches, the stability of genetic traits from generation to generation were not followed up and in-depth study in breeding areas was not carried out. If medicinal plants resources from space with the genetic stability good quality were selected, it would address the problem of lack of resources and ease the pressure on wild resources of medicinal plants. It would at the same time play an important role in promoting the development of medicinal botany space breeding and the implementation of modernization of traditional Chinese medicine.

4.Development of the "Third-Generation" Hybrid Rice in China.

Rice is a major cereal crop for China. The development of the "three-line" hybrid rice system based on cytoplasmic male sterility in the 1970s (first-generation) and the "two-line" hybrid rice system based on photoperiod- and thermo-sensitive genic male-sterile lines (second-generation) in the 1980s has contributed significantly to rice yield increase and food security in China. Here we describe the development and implementation of the "third-generation" hybrid rice breeding system that is based on a transgenic approach to propagate and utilize stable recessive nuclear male sterile lines, and as such, the male sterile line and hybrid rice produced using such a system is non-transgenic. Such a system should overcome the intrinsic problems of the "first-generation" and "second-generation" hybrid rice systems and hold great promise to further boost production of hybrid rice and other crops.

5.From Basic Research to Molecular Breeding - Chinese Scientists Play A Central Role in Boosting World Rice Production.

On November 18, 2018, the Future Science Prize Awarding Ceremony was held in Beijing. In the area of life science, Professors Jiayang Li, Longping Yuan, and Qifa Zhang shared the prize for their pioneering contributions in producing high-yield, superior-quality rice through systematic study of molecular mechanisms associated with specific rice features and application of novel approaches in rice breeding. The Future Science Prize is also touted as "China's Nobel Prize", fully affirming their achievements in rice basic research and breeding.

6.Reproductive ability of a cloned male detector dog and behavioral traits of its offspring.

In 2007, seven detector dogs were produced by somatic cell nuclear transfer using one nuclear donor dog, then trained and certified as excellent detector dogs, similar to their donor. In 2011, we crossed a cloned male and normal female by natural breeding and produced ten offspring. In this study, we investigated the puppies' temperaments, which we later compared with those of the cloned parent male. The results show that the cloned male had normal reproductive abilities and produced healthy offspring. All puppies completed narcotic detector dog training with a success rate for selection of 60%. Although the litter of cloned males was small in this study, a cloned male dog bred by natural mating produced puppies that later successfully completed the training course for drug detection. In conclusion, cloning an elite dog with superior genetic factors and breeding of the cloned dog was found to be a useful method to efficiently procure detector dogs.

8.Effect of wound to growth of larva of host to Ophiocordyceps sinensis during artificial breeding.

To clear the effect of the wound to the growth of the larva of the host to the Ophiocordyceps sinensis, the wounds of same severity at the same position were made artificially to the larva and which were artificial fed at the same environment and condition. The results indicated that, over the winter, the survival rate of the wounded of the infection larva was lower than that of the healthy larva, but the weight had no significant difference between the wounded and the healthy larva. The survival rate of the wounded of the no infection larva was lower than that of the healthy larva, but except with black skin, the wounded larva with offwhite and dusty red had no influence on the variety of the weight. In summery, wound had no advantage to the survival rate, but had no influence to the weight. The result had provided theoretical basis to the reforming of the system of the artificial culture O. sinensis.

9.Progress and countermeasures of Dendrobium officinale breeding.

The standandized cultivation of Chinese medicinal materials is based on variety. With the rapid development of Dendrobium officinale industry and increasing demand of improved varieties, many studies have concentrated on the variety breeding of D. officinale and subsequently achieved remarkable success. This paper systematically expounds the research progress of D. officinale breeding, e. g. the collection and differentiated evaluation for germplasm, theory and practice for variety breeding, tissue culture and efficient production with low-carbon for germchit, and DNA molecular marker-assisted breeding, and then indicates the main problems of the current breeding of D. officinale. Furthermore, the priorities and keys for the further breeding of D. officinale have been pointed out.

10.Studies on impact of temperature and weight in Whitmania pigra bred.

OBJECTIVETo determine the best spawning temperature and weight of Whitmania pigra and the hatching temperature of its eggs.
METHODObserve the state of W. pigra spawning and hatching were observed under different temperatures and weights conditions.
RESULT AND CONCLUSION25 degrees C is the most appropriate temperature for W. pigra spawning and incubation, the best spawning weight of W. pigra was around 20 g. The temperature influenced the lost weight after spawning significantly and was proportion to the lost weight. The body weight showed no substantial influence to the lost weight after spawning. The egg weight of W. pigra which body weight was below 2.0 g was proportion to the hatching rate. The same relationship was not observed in W. pigra over 2.0 g.
