The authors reviewed 73 cases of ligament injuries in 70 patients from October, 1972 to June, 1978 who were admitted and treated in the Orthopedic Department at Kyung Hee University Hospital. Of 70 patients, the sex distribution was 59 patients (84%) in male and 11 patients (16%) in female. The high incidence was in age group from 21 to 40 years, that was 46 patients (55%). Traffic accident was most common cause of ligament injuries that was 61 patients (87%). Methods of treatment were direct repair, reconstruction and conservative treatment. Degree of angle and distance were measured with stress radiogram. Degree of angle and distance were also compared with normal and abnormal knee joints. Eleven cases were treated conservatively, and 62 cases, operatively, of whlch direct repair performed in 56 cases and reconstructive surgery, in 6 casea, The summary were as follows: 1. The result was better in the group with conservative treatment, as compared with operative treatment. And conservative treatment was applied only in single ligament injuries. 2. In normal knee joint, degree of angle was distributed evenly in the range of 0° to 10°, and distance was in the range of 0 to 10 mm. 3. In stress radiograrn, the significance of ligament injuries was present in more than 10° and 10 mm. 4. The measurement of distance seemed to be more meaningful than degree of angle. 5. It is helpful to measure the degree of angle and distance in diagnosis of ligament injuries, though not absolute.

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1979;14(4):601-609
The utility of computed axial tomography(CAT) in the diagnosis of spinal disorders has been the subject of considerable interest since the introduction of CAT scanning. Computed tomographic guided needle biopsy of 12 consecutive patients with a variety of undermined spinal disorders resulted in a 100% yield of positive tissue diagnoses, without signlficant complications. The principal advantage of cat guidance is the continuous direct observation of the needle tip position in relation to the target volume. We think that the application of computed tomographic guided needle biopsy in the lesions of the spine is of great value, because it is the single most accurate method of obtaining diagnosis other than by open surgical biopsy.

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1980;15(1):43-50
From Oct. 1974 to Jun. 1979, 47 diaphyseal fractures of the forearm bones in 36 patients were treated with compression plates. Among them 36 diaphyseal fractures in 28 patients (23 with acute fractures. and 5 with non-union) followed for average 8.3 months from three months to thirty seven months were studied. 19 fractures of the radius and 17 fractures of the ulna were treated with compression plates. Fifteen fractures which were delayed for operation for more than 3 weeks or had severe comminution, had primary iliac bone grafts. The fracture unlon of the radius and ulna was obtained in all cases and average healing time for the radius was 11.9 weeks and for the ulna was 12.3 weeks. The final functional results were excellent, 16 and satisfactory,7. The over all rates of excellent and satisfactory results were 82.2 percent. Therefore compression plate is one of the excellent methods to treat diaphyseal fractures and non-union of the forearm bone.

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1987;22(1):145-150
Severe limitation of knee motion is a complication of operative procedures or trauma about the knee. Physical therapy and occasionally manipulation of knee with anesthesia may improve results when performed soon after the onset of motion limitation. When performed later, these have been proven less useful. This is a review of 15 patients who had severe limitation of knee motion following open operative procedures or trauma about knee and were treated by percutaneous release of adhesions under arthroscopic control. There were eleven males and four females, ranging in age from 23-67years(mean 38 years). The interval between the last open operative procedure or trauma and arthroscopic adhesiolysis ranged from three and half months to four years(mean 11.5 months). The interval between arthroscopic adhesiolysis and final follow-up evaluation ranged from 6 months to 3 years(mean 1.5 years). Average preoperative knee motion was 38.2 degrees. After arthroscopic adhesiolysis, maximum knee motion under anesthesia was 120.3 degrees and average final motion at follow-up was 101.2 degrees. The results of treatment of treatment of Tbc knee sequalae with secondary osteoarthritis and pyogenic arthritis were less favorable for motion improvement. Arthroscopic adhesiolysis seems to be a useful method of treatment in knee ankylosis. Morbidity was low, complications were few and the duration of hospital stay was short.

Journal of the Korean Society of Emergency Medicine 1998;9(3):437-444
Drowning is the second most common cause of accidental death of children in Korea. But the study of near-drowning is very rare in Korea. The purpose of our study is to determine the factors that may influence survival on the basis of submersion time, consciousness state upon admission to hospital, the kinds of water, laboratory findings and neurological outcomes. The survey was performed by a retrospective cohort study on 28 near drowning victims of less than 15 years of age who were admitted to the emergency room in the Chosun University Hospital between May 1988 & May 1997. The results were as follows 1) Sex distribution was 22 males and 6 females. 2) Submersion time was (5 minutes in 9 cases, 5-9 minutes in 6 cases,10-14 minutes in 5 cases,15-19 minutes in 3 cases, > or =20 minutes in 5 cases. 3) Comatose patients upon arrival were 6/7 cases in the death group(86%) and 2/21 cases in the improved group(10%). they had unfavorable outcomes(P<0.05). 4) The first pH value was mean 7.02)0.12 in the death group and mean 7.31 +/-0.13 in the improved group. there was a statistically significant difference between the death and the improved group(P<0.05). 5) The patients who had increased blood glucose concentration were all 7 cases in the death group and 12/22 cases in the improved group(54%). The mean blood glucose concentration was mean 424.7235.6mg/dl in the death group and mean 140.182.7mg/dl in the improved group. There was a statistically significant difference between the death and the improved group(P<0.05). 6) The patients who had pulmonary edema upon arrival were all 7 cases in the death group and 1/21 cases in the improved group(18%). They had unfavorable outcomes(P<0.05). 7) The patients who had been submerged more than 15 minutes were all 7 cases in the death group and 6/21 cases in the improved group(5%). They had unfavorable outcomes(P<0.05). We conclude that pediatric victims of near-drowning can be assigned to high or low likelihoods of unfavorable outcomes with the use of five variables, comatose mentation upon arrival, decreased initial blood pH, increased initial blood glucose concentration, pulmonary edema, and maximum submersion time estimated longer than fifteen minutes. This prediction rule may be useful if it can be validated in another cohort.

Korean Journal of Anatomy 2005;38(1):73-81
Polaris, which is encoded by Tg737 gene, has been associated with cilia formation. Recently pheno-types of ventral neural tube in mice who have abnormal cilia formation have been reported to be similar with those of sonic hedgehog (Shh)signaling mutants. These interesting findings lead us to further examine the patterning of ventral neural tube in Tg737(oprk) mice. In this study, we found that motor neuron and V2 interneuron were preserved whereas P3 progenitor domain and floor plate were missing in Tg737(oprk) mutant. V2 and motor neurons in Tg737(oprk) were ventralized and ixed with each other. Nkx6.1 and Olig2 expressions were preserved and the Olig2 expression was ventralized in Tg737(oprk). These penotypes are quite similar with those in Shh(-/-); Gli3(-/-) or Gli2(-/-) ; Gli3(-/-) mutants, suggesting that the function of Polaris might be involved in Shh signaling.
