In order to determine the contents of lead, cadmium and zinc, the tissues of the crussian carp, Carassius carassius, collected from the middle streams of the Nakdong river were examined. During the dry season from 8 to 15, March, 1987, six loci were selected to sample the fish and river water; five of them were the midstreams of the Nakdong river i.e., the vicinities of the Andong dam, the Nakdong bridge, the Waegwan bridge, Gangjung and Gaepori, the other one was the Kumho river around the Paldal bridge(see Fig.1). The microanalyses of lead and cadmium contents were undertaken by the atomic absorption spectrophotometer(Model IL-551) connected with CTF-IL 655, while that of zinc by the flame method with IL-551 only. The contents of lead and cadmium in water sampled from Gaepori distant from about 30km downward from the junction with the Kumho river were about 1.5 times higher than those from Gangjung distant about 0.5km upward from the junction, and the content of zinc from Gaepori was slightly higher than that from Gangjung. However, the contents of lead and cadmium in water sampled from Gaepori were three fifth of those from the vicinity of Paldal bridge far about 2km upperward from the junction. In the other words, the contents of lead and cadmium in the samples from the vicinity of the Paldal bridge were about 2.5 to 3 times higher than those from the Gangjung and 5 times higher than those from the Andong dam. The contents of the heavy metals in the tissues of Carassius carassius were relatively consistent to those of the aquatic environments were the fish were collected, with higher contents in the tissues of the crussian carp collected from the vicinity of Gaepori and the Paldal bridge which were so much polluted than in those from other loci in upper stream from the junction. And the contents of lead and cadmium in tissues were positively correlated with the age of the fish, however, that zinc was not. The contents of lead in bone of crussian carp from the vicinity of the Paldal bridge in the group of 0-1 year old fish were similar to those of 4-5 years old fish from Gaepori, and higher than those of 3-4 years old fish collected from the upper stream of the junction. It is likely that fishing from Gaepori and the paldal bridge is not recommended, and all the industrial producers have to pay intensive attention to the water pollution due to the sewage disposal.

We have used BALB/c mice as an animal model for the study of anaphylactic hypersensitivity to the house dust mite. For the sensitization, BALB/c mice were injected with a single dose of extracts of Oermatophagoides farinae (D. pa) or Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (D. pt) mixed with adjuvants (aluminum hydroxide and Bordetella pertussis) intraperitonealy. On days of 15, 30, and 60 after the sensitization, the mice received a challenge dose of the same allergen intravenously to induce anaphylactic shock. The hypersensitivity reactions were scored by anaphylactic shock. And various immunological parameters, including cytokines and immunoglobulin isotypes, were studied in relation with the shock. A high level of anaphylactic shock was produced in the mice by both of the allergens, D, fa and D, pt, at 15 and 30 days after sensitization. In vitro Ag specific proliferative reponses of spleen cells from D. pt treated mice (D. pt mice) was six times higher than those from O. fa treated mice (O. fa mice). Regardless the differences in antigens, the production of IFN-r by spleen cells from D. pt mice or O. fa mice was equally high at 15 days after sensitization. However, the ability to produce IFN-r by the spleen cells from D, pt mice was three times higher compared to that from D. fa mice. The production of IL-4 by the spleen cells was enhanced slightly but not significant in both groups. In studies of the allergen-specific immunoglobulin isotypes in the sera of the mice, the level of IgE in both groups was enhanced slightly but not significant. In contrast, the level of IgG subtypes were increased in both groups. When the levels of IgG were compared by subtypes, the level of IgG1 increased significantly on day 15 when the anaphylactic shock score was maximized in both groups. Increase in IgG2a level at the day was not significant, instead, asignificant increase in IgG2 levels was observed on day 60 after sensitization when the anaphylaxis was almost discontinued. Although a higher level of IgG3 was examined on day 15 and 30 in D. pt mice and on day 60 in D, fa mice, anaphylaxis was not appeared to be associated with the levels of IgG3 in this study. The IgG1, rather than IgE, was assumed to the major factor involved in the anaphylactic response observed in this experiment. In conclusion, BALB/c mice would be an animal model for the study of anaphylactic hypersensitivity to D. fa or D, pt., which might be an essential tool for the future development of immuno-therapeutic agents.

Responses of mouse lymphocytes to the soybean paste fermented by Korean traditional fashion was examined to clarify its effects in cytokine production in vitro. A fraction of the soybean paste (KFSP-100) was prepared by precipitation with ammonium sulfate and by filtration through ultrafiltration membrane. KFSP-100 were added into cultures of fresh mouse splenic cells in vitro. KFSP-100 significantly enhanced the amount of IL-6 and TNF-a produced by macrophages and IL-6 and IFN-r produced by lymphocytes. Production of IL-12 by macrophages was not much affected by KFSP-100 treatments. The most noticeable finding was the fact that lymphocytes treated with KFSP-100 proliferated to an exceeding numbers (more than 10 times to the control) in 72 hours. The KFSP-100-induced proliferative response was specific to B cells since almost all of the KFSP-100-induced cells in the cultures of splenic cells were B cells. Furthermore, such a proliferative responses were equally observed only in cultures of purified B cells but not in cultures of T cells. In thermostability test, the biologically active components of the KFSP-100 is assumed to be either linear protein or glycoprotein. KFSP-100 did not induce agglutination of lymphocytes demonstrated by lectins in the same cells. These observations suggest that KFSP-100 may be a novel mitogen for B lymphocytes. The component (s) responsible for the B cell proliferation in KFSP-100 might be a factor gained by natural fermentation. None of the fractions of not fermented soybean paste prepared by the same methods demonstrate the same effect.

We report a case of esthesioneuroblastoma with intracranial extension treated with surgical resection and chemotherapy. A 5-year-old child presented with visual disturbance, and was subsequently found to have a huge sized mass in the anterior skull base, suprasellar region and lateral ventricle. A bifrontal craniotomy with excision of the tumor through subfrontal and interhemispheric approach was performed. The patient received postoperative chemotherapy according to Tandem protocol. A follow-up magnetic resonance(MR) image showed that the tumor showed partial regression, however, there was no change in tumor size in lateral ventricle. Second operation with excision of remnant mass through a transcallosal approach was performed. MR image, 9 months after first operation showed the postoperative change in frontal area without enhancing mass. By employing staged operation and chemotherapy, the authors obtained good results in the treatment of esthesioneuroblastoma with intracranial extension.

The aquatic quality of the Naktong river after two of three months in June, 1991 with phenol spillage from a electrical factory in Kumi was investigated. The samples were collected at six sites of the Naktong river basin and Kachang and Kongsan lakes. Phenol was not detected from all water samples. Turbidity was very much increased to the down stream in the Naktong river. The BOD and COD values exceeded the 2nd grade(3 mg/l) of the Korean standard quality of Environmental Water Act at the all sampling sites of the Naktong river. Especially, the value of COD at Kaejin (12.5 mg/l) was poorly classified as to the 5th grade of water class for the environmental quality standards. Organophosphorous pesticides such as parathion, malathion, fenitrothion and diazinon were investigated but not detected. Diazinon was only detected at the Ilson bridge(1.42 ppb), Okkye stream(6.95 ppb), Waekwan bridge(0.32 ppb), Gangjung reservior(0.13 ppb), Kaejin(0.05 ppb). Of the carbamates such as carbanyl, isoprocarb and cabofuran, the carbofuran was detected all sites except tap water, and Kachang and Kongsan lakes. The content of heavy metals such ans Cd, Pb, Zn, Fe, Mn, Hg were not exceeding for drinking water standards at the all sampling region, but only mecury was detected from Okkye stream(0.018ppb) and Kaejin(0.09ppb). In the regions of Kachang and Kongsan lakes, the content of heavy metals were lower than that of reservoir of Naktong river.

A accidental spills of phenol(100%) to the river Nakdong with subsequent contamination of the tap water for about two million consumers in Taegu city of Korea were occurred in March 1991. A historical cohort study of 6,913 individuals was undertaken to determine the associated with illness. Population subjects were divided into two groups of exposed and unexposed. Exposed subjects were reported to be phenol associated symptoms significantly higher than those in a nearby unexposed area(39.6% vs 9.4%, p<0.01). Especially, in the related symptoms, highly significant differences were noted in the number of subjects reporting gastrointestinal illness such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain. During the accident, study subjects who experienced peculiar taste or odor in the tap water were significantly higher in the exposed areas(92% vs 34.3%). Chlorophenols formed from chlorination of water may have aggravated the problem.

The relationship between mercury level of hair and mental retardation was investigated. The 297 subjects with mental retardation were drawn from two schools providing special educational services, one, consisted of children living in an orphan home, another, children with parents. The 117 control subjects were drawn from whom had got average or above average academic achievement in a regular elementary school. Hair sample were taken from the nape of the neck and the mercury analysis was carried out on an atomic absorption spectrophotometer(IL 551). There was no relationship between mercury contents and age, and there was a statistically significant difference in mercury contents between male and female in the mentally retarded children living with parents. Children in the retarded group had significantly higher mercury contents compared with control group except the female group with parents. Also, the mercury levels in the retarded group living in an orphan home were significantly higher than that of the retarded group with parents. The concomitant diseases were Down's syndrome, epilepsy, cerebral palsy and autism. There were statistically significant differences in hair mercury levels in the cases of accompanying Down's syndrome and cerebral palsy in male and Down's syndrome and autism in female compared with the control group of the same sex. The most accompanying handicap was speech disturbance(40.7%) and the others were crippled, emotional disturbance etc. The percentages of double handicap were 66.7% among 6 persons exceeding 6ppm of their hair mercury contents, 10.4% among 3~6 ppm and 15.7% among the group of 3ppm or less. The findings of this study suggest that the more opportunities of exposure to mercury in mentally retarded children may have occurred, so it can not be excluded the possibility of mercury as a contributing factor to mental retardation. Therefore, the causal relationship between mercury levels and mental retardation should be established through the examinations about their living environments, dietary pattern, eating habit etc.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors have been shown to improve the endothelial dysfunction and prevent the development of atherosclerosis in animal models. We performed this study to investigate the effects of the ACE inhibitor, ramipril, on carotid atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction of the brachial artery in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We studied 69 subjects with a mean age of 59yrs, and divided them into two groups according to ramipril use (39 patients with ramipril and 30 without). Using a double-blind, randomized, prospective design, we measured the flow-mediated vasodilatation (FMD) of the brachial artery and intima-media thickness (IMT) of the carotid artery, prior to, and 1, 3 and 6 months following coronary angiograms in CAD patients. RESULTS: The FMD was significantly increased in the ramipril group from 4.6+/-2.2% baseline to 5.3+/-2.5% at the 1 month follow-up (p<0.05), but at the 3 and 6 month follow-ups no significant changes were found. There were no significant differences in the FMD between the two groups at any of the follow-up periods, and no changes in the IMT were found in relation to time for either group. CONCLUSION: Ramipril improved the endothelial dysfunction in patients with CAD for the first month; however this effect did not persist 3 or 6 months after taking ramipril. Ramipril had no effect on the atherosclerotic vascular changes to the IMT of carotid arteries.

BACKGROUND: Hyperplastic neointima is one of the major mechanisms of restenosis following balloon angioplasty in selected patients with symptomatic angina pectoris. Elevation of cellular cyclic nucleotide levels such as cAMP and cGMP are known to inhibit the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells. 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX) increases intracellular cAMP and cGMP by nonselective inhibition of phosphodiesterases (PDEs). We conducted this study under the hypothesis that local delivery of IBMX could inhibit neointimal hyperplasia after balloon injury of the rat carotid artery. METHODS: Left common carotid artery of 10 week old male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to arterial injury by 2F Fogarty balloon catheter. After injury, animals were allocated to the control groups (control 1: injury control and control 2: pluronic gel plus DMSO control) and IBMX group, which received pluronic polymer gel, DMSO and IBMX mixture periadventitially. After 3 weeks, the rats were killed by overdose of ketamine, and the injured left arteries were pressure-fixed with 10% formalin and subjected to histomorphological analysis. RESULTS: Mean body weight of rats was not statistically different among study groups. The mean area of neointima (control group 1:0.28+/-0.05 mm2,Control group 2:0.27+/-0.08 mm2 , IBMX group:0.18+/-0.08 mm2 : p<0.05) and the mean ratio of neointima to medial area[versus (control group 1:1.89+/-0.37, control group 2:1.95+/-0.41, IBMX group: 1.41+/-0.47: p<0.05)] were significantly less in IBMX group. The mean area of external elastic lamina was significantly larger in control group 1 than IBMX group (0.57+/-0.07 mm2 versus 0.47+/-0.10 mm2 ) and mean luminal area showed no significant difference among groups (control group1:0.14+/-0.07 mm2 , control group 2: 0.10+/-0.05 mm2 , control group 3: 0.16+/-0.06 mm2). CONCLUSION: Peri-adventitial single administration of IBMX showed its effectiveness in reducing the neointimal proliferation in rat carotid balloon injury model. Furthermore we observed the positive correlation between intimal area and EELA suggesting vascular remodeling depending on the intima volume.
