1.Clinical Results of The Eyes with Posterior Capsule Rupture During Cataract Operation.

To evaluate the character, management and clinical results of the posterior capsular rupture during cataract surgery, we retrospectively studied the cataract surgeries that were performed between May 1989 and April 1998. We discovered 194 eyes in which the posterior capsule was torn. The overall incidence of this complication was 3.15%. Our chart review of these surgical procedure revealed that the tear occurred most frequently during the nucleus removal(63.9%), occurred more frequently at the periphery than the center and the extent was mostly below one-third of the whole posterior capsular surface(75.8%). We performed vitrectomy(58.8%) and peripheral iridectomy(8.8%). Posterior capsular lenses were implanted in 183 cases. The predicted power of lens calculated with SRK-II formula and manufacturer`s A-constant was approximately 0.46 diopter less than actual postoperative refraction. Final visual acuity of 20/40 or better was achieved in 76.8% of the 194 cases. Our results revealed that when properly managed, a torn posterior capsule is compatible with an excellent visual outcome.

2.A Case of Angiolymphoid Hyperplasia with Eosinophilia.

Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia is a disorder of the skin and subcutaneous lesion of unknown cause. It is characterized by painless, vascular tumor-like nodules of various size, primarily affecting the head and neck region. The histological hallmark of angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia is a benign angiomatous or angioma-like proliferation within the background of the stroma, which is heavily infiltrated by lymphocytes and eosinophils, and includes lymphatic follicles with prominent germinal centers. The authors have recently experienced a case of angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia in a 29-year old male who had painless and enlarging nodules in the nasal cavity and the buccal mucosa for a year. We present this case with the review of literatures.

3.Anti-Inflammatory Effect of Violapyrones B and C from a Marine-derived Streptomyces sp..

Recently, we reported violapyrones B, C, H and I, unusual 3, 4, 6-trisubstituted alpha-pyrone derivatives, from the culture broth of the marine Streptomyces sp. 112CH148. In previous studies, violapyrones have been shown to have antibacterial and antitumor activities. However, the anti-inflammatory effect of violapyrones has not been reported yet. As part of our ongoing study for the discovery of bioactive metabolites from marine microorganisms, we found that violapyrones also have anti-inflammatory activity. In this study, we investigated the effect of violapyrones on LPS-induced inflammatory responses in vitro. Violapyrones B and C did not affect the viability of RAW 264.7 cells at concentrations up to 25 microM. However, violapyrones B and C inhibited the production of NO compared to the LPS-induced control. In addition, violapyrones B and C down-regulated the expression of iNOS protein in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the anti-inflammatory activity of violapyrones B and C.
