2.A Clinical Study of 17 Patients with Syringomyelia.

Syringomyelia is a relatively uncommon, chronic, slowly progressive, degenerative process characterized by cavitation and gliosis within the substance of the spinal cord and/or the medulla. There have been only a few case reports in Korea. The authors reviewed 17 patients with syringomyelia diagnosed by delayed metrizamide spinal CT and/or MR imaging at Seoul National University Hospital from January, 1983 to June, 1987. Eleven were male and the age of onset was less than 40 in 16 (mean 23.4). The mean duration of symptoms was 87.1 months (range 3-276). Clinical features were similar to classical cases except sphincter involovement and abnormal sweating were more common in this report. The syrinx cavity which showed dye collection within spinal cord in delayed metrizamide spinal CT and low signal intensity in T1 weighted MR imaging was located mainly at cervicothoracic junction. The causes were the hindbran abnormality in 5, intramedullary cord tumor in 5, trauma in 3, adhesive arachnoiditis in 1 and unknown in 3. The cases with sensory dissociation had shorter duration of symptoms than those without sensory dissociation and showed normal results in SEPs study. Eleven patients were treated surgically and nine of them improved. MRI and SEPs are thought to be good aids for the understanding of the mechanism and course of syringomyelia.

3.Low Grade Fibromyxoid Sarcoma in Chest Wall: One case report.

Low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma is a recently recognized, uncommon soft tissue neoplasm. It has a tendency to develop in deep soft tissue of young adults and a possibility of local recurrence or distant metastasis. Diagnostic criteria have not been well defined and this tumor has not been accepted as a distinct entity. Histologically, it is characterized by the presence of bland spindle cells with mainly whorled pattern of growth, set in alternating areas with a myxoid or fibrous stroma. Careful consideration of the morphological and immunohistochemical features of this tumor permit a positive diagnosis of low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma and allow its distinction from a number of other benign and malignant soft tissue neoplasms. We experienced a low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma in chest wall and report this case with a review of the literature.

4.MRI and Clinical Profiles of Multiple Sclerosis.

We retrospectively analyzed twenty three rnagnetic resonance images in eighteen patients of 'definite' multiple sclerosis. On brain MRI films of 15 cases one hundred and twenty lesions were identlfied Fifty-four percent of the lesions (67 /120) were clinically 'silent' and usually located at the centrurn serniovale or periventricular areas. Four of hve patients with clinically suspected optic-spinal forrn did not show MS plaques on brain MRIs. - Seven of eight patients with myelopathy showed MS plaques on spine MRIs which were definitdy correlated with clinical syrnptoms. Neurologic Severity assessed by Kurtzke's disability status scale was not correlated with the severity of MRI.

5.Seroprevalence of hepatitis E virus in zoo animal species in Korea.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) can infect not only human but also several animals. This study has been conducted to evaluate the comprehensive anti-HEV seroprevalence in zoo animals in Korea. Anti-HEV antibodies were identified in 14 of 64 zoo animal species. HEV antibodies were detected for the first time in Eurasian Lynx, Setland Pony, Fallow Deer, Ezo Sika, Formosa Deer, East Wapitis, Barasingha, Corriedale, American Bison, Guanacos, Reticulated Giraffe, and Saanen. These results indicate that the several zoo animal species were exposed to HEV.

6.Induction of antibody and interferon-gamma production in mice immunized with virus-like particles of swine hepatitis E virus.

Virus-like particles (VLPs) composed of the truncated capsid protein of swine hepatitis E virus (HEV) were developed and immune responses of mice immunized with the VLPs were evaluated. IgG titers specific for the capsid protein of swine HEV were significantly higher for all groups of mice immunized with the VLPs than those of the negative control mice. Splenocytes from mice immunized with the VLPs also produced significantly greater quantities of interferon (IFN)-gamma than interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-10. These newly developed swine HEV VLPs have the capacity to induce antigen-specific antibody and IFN-gamma production in immunized mice.
