Objective To evaluate the association between stress hyperglycemia and clinical out-comes among patients with and without diabetes mellitns admitted to medical intensive care unit (MICU).Methods We reviewed the medical ICU records of 1016 consecutive patients admitted to Wu Han Univer-sity Ren Min Hospital. According to admission glucose level, 126 patients with debates and 890 patients without known debates were divided into group 1 ( <6 mmol/L), group 2(6 ~ 8mmol/L), group 3(8 ~10mmol/L), and group 4( > 10mmol/L). The primary end point of the study was in-hospital mortality. Secondary end points included length of hospital stay, length of ICU stay, the ratio of mechanical ventila-tion, blood transfusions, antibiotics and blood glucose treatment. Results The hospital mortality among patients without a history of diabetes mellitus was 4. 7%, 12. 1%, 20. 5%, 30. 3% in group 1, 2, 3, 4,respectively. The ratio of mechanical ventilation, blood transfusions, and antibiotics increased progressively as glucose values increased. Conclusions Hyperglycemia was a common disease, and it may be an impor-tant marker of poor clinical outcome and mortality in patients without history of diabetes.

As the rapid development of economy necessitates a large number of oil, the contradiction between energy supply and demand is further exacerbated by the dwindling reserves of petroleum resource. Therefore, the research of the renewable cellulosic biomass resources is gaining unprecedented momentum. Because xylose is the second most abundant monosaccharide after glucose in lignocellulose hydrolyzes, high-efficiency bioconversion of xylose becomes one of the vital factors that affect the industrial prospects of lignocellulose application. According to the research progresses in recent years, this review summarized the advances in bioconversion of xylose, which included identification and redesign of the xylose metabolic pathway, engineering the xylose transport pathway and bio-based chemicals production. In order to solve the energy crisis and environmental pollution issues, the development of advanced bio-fuel technology, especially engineering the microbe able to metabolize xylose and produce ethanol by synthetic biology, is environmentally benign and sustainable.

Objective To investigate the influence of acpuncture on free calcium in rat brain cells after focal cerebral ischemia reperfusion. Methods 145 adult male SD rats were randomly divided into control group, simple ischemia reperfusion group and acupuncture with ischemia reperfusion group. The middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) rat model was established by the modified Longa occlusion method. ①The part of free calcium in rat brain cells, focal cevebral ischemia model of rats were made by thread locking up the blood vessel for 15 min.30 min later after reperfusion, the Baihui and Shuigou Point in Du meridian were acupunctured electrically 30 min. After 3h, 6h and 12h, the rat was killed and its brain cells were made into single cell suspension, marked by Fluo-3/AM.The fluorescence optical density was recorded by laser confocal microscopy.②The part of nerve functional reconstruction, focal cevebral ischemia model of rats were made by thread locking up the blood vessel for 12 hours.30 min later after reperfusion, the Baihui and Shuigou Point in Du meridian were acupunctured electrically 30 min. After 7 d, 14 d,30 d,60 d and 90 d, the rat was forced to detect it's strength of the dog. Results ①Free calcium in rats of acupuncture therapy group(6h:10.96±1.18;2h:20.9±4.37) was significantly less than that in control group in 6 h and 12 h after reperfusion (6 h: 16.87 ± 3.56,12 h: 34.10 ±1.06)(P<0.05).②The dog in rats of acupuncture therapy group was significantly more than that in control group in 7 d, 14 d after reperfusion (P< 0.05 ).No difference of the dog was detected in 30 d ,60 d and 90 d after reperfusion between the two groups. Conclusion Acupunture could decreases the concentration of free calcium and the expression of Caspase-3 mRNA in rat brain cells after focal cerebral ischemia reperfusion, and it can facilitate the recovery of nerve function.

Objective To explore the curative effect of prealbumin (PA) in the hand-foot-and-mouth dis-ease and analysis its value in monitoring and prognosing this disease. Method Detect levels of serum PA of 390 ca-ses of children before, after and during the treatment and compare the changes during the treatment. Then observe the prognosis. Results There are significant difference of PV levels between cases of different prognosis (P < 0.05). Conclusion The PV levels of children of hand-foot-and-mouth disease will change significantly after effective treat- ment. There are clinical significance in observing and prognosing the hand-foot-and-mouth disease by detecting the se-rum PV levels.

G-protein-coupled receptor kinases (GRKs) are a family of serine/threonine protein kinases. The investigators pay much attention to the roles of GRKs in the signal transduction through G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) with arrestin ever since a long time ago. Due to the physiological and pathological observations with the methods of deletion or overexpression, GRKs are considered as new drug targets. The kinases play a role in the pathogenesis of hypertension and cell migration through GPCRs and Hedgehog signaling pathways. As the development of research techniques, especially bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), the special mechanism of GRKs for GPCRs is more evident. In this review, we discuss the recent achievement in the roles of GRKs signaling and the related newest research techniques.
