The use of osseointegrated implants is an accepted procedure for the treatment of Total, or partial edentulism and offers good predictability of long-term success. Osseointegration implies a firm and direct interlocking between vital bone and screw-shaped titanium implants. There should be not to interposed tissue between fixture and bone. This study was undertaken to assess the clinical condition, complication, and prosthodontic aftercare of different implant systems. One hundred fifty-nine patients treated with a total of 503 endosseous implants (364 Steri-oss threaded type, 69 Integral cylinder with HA coated type, 35 Steri-oss threaded with HA coated type, 21 Steri-oss cylinder with HA coated type and 14 3i implant type), Most of the implant were placed in type B and C bone quantity and type 2 and 3 bone quality according to Lekhorm and Zarb. The success rate of Steri-oss threaded type during healing and function was 92%, Steri-oss threaded type with hydroxyapatite coated was 91%, Steri-oss cylinder type with hydroxyapatite coated was 90%, Integral cylinder type with hydroxyapatite coated was 90% and 3i implant type was 93%. One hundred twenty-nine patients had been treated with implant prosthesis. 79 of these patients had received a fixed type prosthesis and 50 patients had received a removable type prosthesis. There were no differences between the implant systems with regard to age, gender. Failures were associated with poor bone quality, smaller implant sizes, a surgical installation technique and stress distribution when in function. Visual analgoue scales recorded as satisfied results functionally and esthetically, but 15% dissatified with chewing ability.

PURPOSE: To compare MRI appearance between plicae syndrome and normal plicae. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MR images of 60 cases of arthroscopically-confirmed plicae syndrome and 18 of arthroscopically-proven normal plicae were retrospectively analyzed. Sagittal T2-weighted MR images in all cases and MPGR(200) in 37 cases of plicae syndrome were obtained. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test. RESULTS: On the basis of operatingresults, we observed 55 medial plicae, eight combined medial and suprapatellar plicae, four suprapatellar plicae,and one lateral plica. T2-weighted sagittal MR scans of the 60 cases demonstrated 37 medial plicae, 8 suprapatellar and one lateral plica. Joint effusion was found in 26 cases of 55 medial plicae. In T2-weighted sagittal MR scans, the identification of medial plicae was superior in the presence of joint effusion than its absence(plicae syndrome, p < 0.001 ; normal plicae group, p < 0.05). Medial plicae were well demonstrated onMPGR(200) axial images; on T2-weighted sagittal MR scans, they could be more frequently identified in the plicae syndrome group than in the normal control group(p < 0.001). Plicae syndrome-associated pathology included degenerative change of the articular cartilage of the medial femoral condyle in eight cases(14.5%), discoidmeniscus in nine(16.4%), lateral meniscus tear in 12(21.8%), medial meniscus tear in 21(38.1%), anterior cruciate ligament tear in three(5.5%), medial collateral ligament tear and osteochondritis dissecans in one case. CONCLUSION: The present study revealed that synovial plicae were well demonstrated in T2-weighted sagittal images, particularly on the presence of joint effusion. Medial plicae could be more frequently identified in the plicae syndrome group than in the normal control group, especially on T2-weighted sagittal MR scans.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of color Doppler ultrasound (US) in the diagnosis of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Intralesional color flows and resistive index (RI) on color Doppler US were prospectively analyzed in 21 consecutive suspected GTN cases. RI of the intralesional artery was investigated on the basis of the presence or absence of mass and metastasis. Correlation between RI of intralesional artery and urinary beta-hCG was also investigated. RESULTS: Intralesional color flows were identified in 15 patients with GTN. On operation, intralesional color flows were observed in one of two patients in whom the presence of completely necrotic tissue was confirmed. Intralesional color flows, however, were not detected in four patients who were proved not to be GTN sufferers. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive and negative predictive values, and accuracy were 100%, 83%, 95%, 94% and 100%, respectively. Significant correlation between RI of the intralesional artery and urinary beta-hCG was not established(p=0.49, r=0.19). RI of this artery was not substantially different between groups with and without mass, and between groups with and without metastasis(p=0.32, p=0.82). CONCLUSION: The current study demonstrates that color Doppler US is a sensitive and useful method for the diagnosis of GTN.

Microsporum (M.) canis is one of the zoophilic dermatophytes which can cause ringworm in cats and dogs and is responsible for 3~30% of tinea corporis and tinea capitis in human. It is most likely transmitted by contact with infected animals, but rare cases of person-to-person transmission and an outbreak among school girls have also been reported. Herein we report on interesting cases of tinea corporis caused by M. canis in a grandmother and a granddaughter. A 63-year-old woman presented with pruritic, scaly, erythematous plaques on the post. neck and trunk which had started 2 months ago. Also her 9-year-old granddaughter presented with pruritic, annular, erythematous plaques on chest and back for 7 days. They denied contact with animals. KOH smear showed several hyphaes on microscope. Fungus culture on potato dextrose agar showed growth of colonies with whitish fluffy surface and radial folds, the dorsal surface of the colonies showed golden-brown color which were identified as M. canis in both patients. As for the grandmother the lesions improved with oral itraconazole 200 mg/day for 7 days and topical antifungal cream for 5 weeks which resulted in marked improvement of the lesions.

BACKGROUND: Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is considered a different disease entity from acute urticaria in relation to its pathogenesis, despite both disease types having similar clinical manifestations that include wheals, flares, and angioedema. OBJECTIVE: We sought to identify the clinical factors that might predict the disease course of new-onset urticaria, determine whether the disease will be limited to an acute course or if it will progress to a chronic course, and to estimate the chronic progression rate in relation to the presence of each clinical factor and laboratory abnormality. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 348 patients with new-onset urticaria. Of these, 141 patients had progressed to chronic disease and 207 patients showed a limited to acute course with disease durations of less than 6 weeks. We compared the progressed to chronic and limited to acute disease groups in relation to differences in their clinical presentations and severities, and the laboratory data. RESULTS: The overall chronic progression rate of new-onset urticaria was 40.5%. The chronic progression rate was highest in patients aged 30~39 years (52.3%), in patients prescribed antihistamines (52.9%), and when the cause of urticaria was unknown (51.8%). The laboratory test results did not differ significantly between the study groups. CONCLUSION: Patients with new-onset urticaria are likely to have chronic courses when they are aged 30~39 years, when they have mild clinical symptoms initially, and when the cause of urticaria is difficult to identify.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of the emergence of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) on pediatric intussusception. Materials and Methods: Patients (< 18 years) who were diagnosed with intussusception and received enema reduction from 2011 to 2020 were included. We reviewed the demographics, yearly/monthly/seasonal incidence of intussusception, method and failure rate of enema reduction, recurrence rate of intussusception, surgical record, and pathologic report. Subsequently, we investigated the differences in mean age, failure rate of enema reduction, and recurrence rate of intussusception between the cases in 2020 and those in the period from 2011 to 2019. Results: A total of 859 enema reductions were performed during the past decade, more in males and in the age < 1 year (mean age, 22.2 months). The yearly incidence was highest in 2014 and lowest in 2020, and the monthly incidence was highest on December and September. The cases in 2020 (n = 27) had a lower mean age (18.1 months vs. 22.8 months), higher failure rate of enema reduction (7.4% vs. 2.4%), and higher recurrence rate of intussusception (14.8% vs 7.3%) compared with those that occurred between 2011 and 2019 (n = 832). However, these results did not show statistical significance (p = 0.07, p = 0.15, p = 0.14, respectively). Conclusion With the emergence of COVID-19, the number of enema reductions was remarkably decreased with a lower mean age, higher failure rate, and higher recurrence rate.

PURPOSE: Penile fracture is a relatively rare condition that is defined as a traumatic rupture of the tunica albuginea followed by subsequent subcutaneous hematoma of various degrees. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical presentations and outcomes of the treatment according to causes of penile fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between March 1998 and December 2002, ten patients aged 19 to 65 years underwent immediate surgical repair on the first or second day after fracture of the penis at our hospital. All patients came to the hospital 20 minutes to 34 hours after the injury. A complete history of the patient was taken and a thorough examination was performed including physical examination and cavernosography. RESULTS: All patients had taken cavernosography. Three of the patients showed hematuria(microscopic or gross) and were taken retrograde urethrography. All patients were surgically treated. Nine patients showed unilateral corporal ruptures. Two patients had urethral injuries; one had a total urethral rupture and the other had a corporal spongiosal partial tearing. Regardless of the causes of penile fractures, the lesions on the penile mid-shaft were the most common. Of the direction of lesions the transverse tearings of tunica albuginea at 6 to 8 o'clock position were the most common. At follow-up, all patients who were available reported erections adequate for intercourse without erectile or voiding dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS: All patients were treated successfully by immediate surgical repair regardless of the causes of the penile fractures, which is recommended for penile fracture.
