Cerebral angiography with contrast medium (CM) is a key method for diagnosis and interventional treatment of intracranial cerebral vascular lesions. Cerebral angiography causes few neurologic complications. There have been rare reports of complications related to disruption of the blood-brain barrier due to the administration of nonionic CM. We observed two patients with transient neurologic complications following cerebral angiography and coil embolization for unruptured aneurysm.

Radiation-induced brain injury is a serious complication after cranio-cerebral radiotherapy, which affects the patient's quality of life and survival. A large number of studies have shown that various mechanisms such as neuronal apoptosis, blood-brain barrier damage, and synaptic dysfunction may be related to radiation-induced brain injury. Acupuncture has an important role in clinical rehabilitation of various brain injuries. As a new type of acupuncture, electroacupuncture has the characteristics of strong control ability, uniform and long-lasting stimulation, and is widely used in clinic. This article reviews the effects and mechanisms of electroacupuncture on radiation-induced brain injury, in order to provide a theoretical basis and experimental support for reasonable clinical application.

We evaluated the effect of mannitol-induced blood-brain-barrier disruption(BBBD) in 20 rats of the routine-dose mannitol group(1.75g/kg), 7 rats of the small-dose mannitol group(0.87g/kg), and 10 rats of the saline control group. Radioactivity ratios of brain section to plama in the routine dose mannitol group revealed a wide variation of 0.0134 to 0.1747 which was compared to the small dose mannitol group of 0.0107-0.0275 in the plasma albumin space and to the saline control group of 0.0051-0.0174. This result suggest that mannitol-induced BBBD may not be threshold event of all-or-none phenopomenon, but progressive graded reaction with various sensitivity.

Early delayed radiation effects are known to occur within several months after completing radiotherapy for brain tumors. We present marked changes of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan that occurred one month after radiotherapy in a patient with a pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma, which was eventually diagnosed as an early delayed radiation effect. Such an early development of dramatic MRI change has not been reported in patients treated with radiotherapy for pleomorphic xanthoastrocytomas.

Sleep deprivation,the process and state of partial or complete lack of normal sleep caused by various factors,is prevalent at present.Seriously impairing the physical and mental health,sleep deprivation has become a public health problem that cannot be ignored.Studies have demonstrated that blood-brain barrier impairment is the key pathophysiological process of a variety of neurological diseases.Although clinical and basic studies have suggested that sleep deprivation can induce blood-brain barrier impairment,the underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated.This review summarizes the advances in the mechanisms of blood-brain barrier impairment induced by sleep deprivation.

Among the various routes of drug administration, perhaps the least studied is intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration. This route has been shown to be particularly useful in administering to the central nervous system (CNS) drugs that do not cross the blood-brain barrier readily. As such, the ICV route is a valuable option for providing therapeutic CNS drug concentrations to treat patients with CNS infectious and neoplastic diseases. This route of drug administration also has the advantage of minimizing systemic toxicity.

Lidocaine is widely used as local anesthetic agent in the emergency department. Lidocaine crosses the blood brain barrier rapidly, and has been recognized generally as a proconvulsant drug. Acute lidocaine intoxication has a variety of causes, most of which related to excessive or inappropriate therapeutic dose. It has been recommended the total amount of lidocaine should not exceed 5 mg/kg without epinephrine and 7 mg/kg with epinephrine. We present a case of a patient who developed generalized convulsive status epilepticus following administration of lidocaine for epidermograft.

Triflouromethylhydroartemisinine (ART-F) effects on electroencephalogram (EEG) of experimental rabbits. The results showed that ART-F with doses 20 mg/kg for 14 days weren't a tendency to inhibit the voltage of basic waves of EEG produced at reticulum in brain system and somato-sensitive in brain-tunic. With doses 50 mg/kg for 14 days, ART-F had a tendency to excite and influenced the ability of higher function of the nervous system
