2.Obesity - risk and our attitude
Journal of Practical Medicine 2002;435(11):16-19
The obesity is growing in the Western Pacific Region. Currently, is have been not the major health problem in viet nam; however, the experts anticipated a rapid rise in prevalence in viet Nam during coming years, with high prevalence will be found in youngsters. The prevalence of obesity is highest in people aged 20 - 50 years. Women are more susceptible than men. The prevalence is increasing with the growth of the socioeconomic and different according to geographic, race and ethnic characteristics. Studies demonstrated that the criteria for obese classification applied for Europeans and Americans could not be used for Asians, especially for people from ASEAN countries. WHO introduced new criteria for this condition that can apply to this region since year 2000. To prevent effectively this condition, Viet Nam must implement active and appropriate measures right now.

3.Role of preventive therapy for solid lesions of normothyroidic single-nodular goiter.
Journal of Practical Medicine 2002;435(11):53-56
Normothyroidic single-nodular goiter is a common disease. Now it can be detected and intervented early so that its prognosis is improving significantly. The effectiveness of preventive therapy for nodular goiter by TST releasing inhibition with levothyroxin was examined in 110 patients. The results showed that levothyroxin therapy to inhibit the release of TST is needed for solid lesions. In younger patients with less than 1cm goiter, the result of treatment is more likely to be maximized, the lesions regress completely and the thyroid functions are normalized. For more than 45-year patients with more than 2-cm goiter, the result of treatment is poor. Use levothyroxin with cautions in over 60-year patients who have cardiovascular diseases and multiple nodular goiter.

4.Care for diabetics in VietNam and some other Asian countries
Journal of Practical Medicine 2002;435(11):32-35
In 1998, 12 Asian countries with 230 centers had involved in a study on diabetic care that was supported by Novo Nordisk. This study had enrolled 21.806 patients. The results showed that the age of type II diabetes onset is 52.213.1 in VietNam, higher significantly than other countries. The incidence of type II diabetes in VietNam is lower than other countries. Using HBA1C as a marker for monitoring, it was found that only 5-10% of patients were receiving optimal management, 20% receiving good and 70-75% receiving not so good management.

5.The diagnosis of the thyroid nodules
Journal of Practical Medicine 2002;435(11):13-16
The ultrasonography is a good method for diagnosis of the thyroid nodules: 250 random selected patients in B¹ch Mai Hospital were examined and have radiation iodine image, quantitative analysis of blood TSH, ultrasound diagnosis. Results: the combination clinical examination with para-clinical tests was very necessary, especially the cytological diagnosis. The blood level of TSH is insignificant value in determined diagnosis. It should consider the ultrasound of thyroid as regular test in diagnosis of thyroid nodule

6.The factual status of diabetes mellitus – glucoza tolerant declining, related factors and hospital management status in Hanoi city
Journal of Practical Medicine 2004;471(1):51-54
A survery was conducted on 1069 subjects aged 20- 74 years old(male 47%, female 53%) living in Ha Noi, concerning the diabetes status. Results showed no difference in term of genders but geographically, in urban areas the prevalence was 2 times higher than in the suburb. The number of diabetes patients of under secondary level were 21 times higher than the higher level. Among the hand worker, the prevalence was lower than in sedentary workers. The prevalence was also low in the intellectuals.

7.Influence of nutrition al habit and physical activities on the disturbance of sugar metabolism
Journal of Practical Medicine 2003;463(10):56-59
Research on 1060 people who from 20 to 74 years old live in Hanoi. 47% of them was man and 53% was woman. Result: eating and drinking habit has importance effect to the development of diabetes disease. People who eat much fat, drink much beer and eat little vegetable have higher risk of suffering diabetes to use little fat, don’t drink beer and smoke tobacco, and eat more vegetable. People who live in city eat vegetable, fruit and smoke less than suburban but they drink beer much than suburban. Body activity has close relation to the disease condition

9.A More evidence confirming the state of iodine deficiency in Mekong Delta.
Journal of Practical Medicine 2003;445(3):23-26
Iodine concentrations of water samples, vegetable samples and soil samples in Kien Thanh commune (KT) – Cho Moi district – An Giang province were compared with those of Duyen Ha commune (DH) – Thanh Tri district – Ha Noi city. Iodine intake of KT people was about 60 mg daily. 70.1% of urine samples had low iodine concentration. Iodine concentration in water, soil and vegetable in both communes were in the low range and had statistically significant differences. In ND, mean iodine concentration in the soil was lower than in DH (2.63530 mg/kg vs 3.0360 mg/kg). In the water iodine mean concentration was lower in KT than in DH (0.00127 mg/kg vs 0.00173 mg/kg) and in vegetable 0.96100 mg/kg vs 1.15770 mg/kg respectively

10.Blood biochemical parameters and anthropometric indexes among people with risk factors for type 2 diabetes
Phong -- Le ; Binh and colleagues Van Ta
Journal of Medical and Pharmaceutical Information 2003;0(11):26-29
Background: Diabetes is a common chronic glucide metabolic disorder affecting hundreds of millions of people around the world. In Vietnam, the number of people with risk of type 2 diabetes is approximately 5 million. \r\n', u'Objectives: To discover the changes of blood biochemical parameters and mean body mass index (SMIJ waist circumference in individuals with diabetic risk factors). \r\n', u'Method: 95 people with diabetic risk factors were selected by screening. One group was in Ngoc Trao or Phu Son wards (n=52) and other group was in Sa Dinh ward (n=43). \r\n', u'Results: In Ngoc Trao and Phu Son wards: the prevalence of blood glucose, cholesterol triglyceride, HDL, LDL disorders and SMI>23 were 65.3%, 32.7%, 46.2%, 1.9%, 36.5%, 61.5%, respectively. In Sa Dinh ward: those were 62.8%, 29.7%, 44.2%, 2.3%, 34.9% and 67.4%, respectively. \r\n', u'Conclusion: Disorders of blood biochemical parameters accounted for very high rate in individuals with diabetic risk factors and could be considered main risk factors. \r\n', u'
