Amblyopia greatly affects the physical and mental development of children. Acupuncture is effective for amblyopia, though its mechanism remains unclear. This article summarized the mechanism of acupuncture treatment of amblyopia from the perspectives of morphology of neurons in visual cortex, visual electrophysiology, and molecular biology, etc. It was found that acupuncture may treat amblyopia through repairing the morphological and ultrastructural damages of neurons in visual cortex, promoting the electrical activities in visual pathway and visual cortical neurons, and modulating the synthesis and expression levels of factors involved in visual system. Nevertheless, further studies are required to unveil the mechanism of acupuncture treatment of amblyopia.

Objective To study the effect of Xuebijing injection on the change of intestinal tract mucosa barriers and the expression of macrophage antihody in rats with sepsis. Method Totally 150 Wistar rats were ran-domly divided into three groups: sham group, sepsis group, and Xuebijing group. Sepsis models were estabhshed in rats by cecal ligation and puncture. The success standards of sepsis included fever, the increase of respiration rate, increased heart rate and change in leukocyte count. At 12 hours before operation, and after operation the rats in the Xuebijing group were injected with 4 mL/kg Xuebijing (once every 12 hours for 3 days), and the rats in the others two groups were injected with the same volume of saline, the image analytical system were used to detect the pathological change of intestinal tract mucosa harriers and the expression of macrophage antibody in three groups. All the data were analyzed by rank-sum test and variance analysis(F test). Results Almost all the mucous mem-brahe of small intestine in sham groups were normal. The mucous membrane lesions of small intestine developed in sepsis and Xuebijing groups after 12,24,48,72 hours, and the lesion was severer in sepsis group than that in the Xuebijing group (H=19.732, P<0.01). There were no significant differences on the expression of macrophage antibody in mucous membrane of small intestine between three groups at 3 hours. But at 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours, the expression of macmphage antibody of sepsis and Xnebijing groups increased with time (F=560.13, P< 0.05). Conclusions At the early period of sepsis, intestinal tract mucosa barriers develops varying degrees of damage, and Xnebijing can partly protect intestinal tract mucosa barriers.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the etiologies and prevention of patellar instability after total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
METHODSFrom September 1997 to April 2005, 94 patients (105 knees) underwent TKA without patellar resurfacing. All of them were osteoarthritis. Ten patients (14 knees) were performed with Rotation Knee (RK) prostheses. Forty patients were performed with mobile bearing TACK prostheses, and 44 patients with GEMINI prostheses. Subluxation and tilt of patella were evaluated by X-rays before or after operation.
RESULTSThe incidence of patellar instability after operation was 28.6% in patients who had genu valgus deformity, and was 29.5% in whom had patellar instability preoperative. The incidence of patellar instability in RK, TACK, and GEMINI group was 28.6%, 20.9%, and 16.7% respectively after operations. Four patients had obvious femoral or tibial components malrotation.
CONCLUSIONSThe etiologies of patellofemoral instability include pre-operative conditions, prosthetic design, and improper positioning of the prosthetic component. So the suitable component design and skillful operative technique will help the surgeon to avoid this complication.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the safety and the clinical value of external use of jiuyi Powder (JP) in treating plasma cell mastitis using partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLSDA).
METHODSTotally 50 patients with plasma cell mastitis treated by external use of JP were observed and biochemical examinations of blood and urine detected before application, at day 4 after application, at day 1 and 14 after discontinuation. Blood mercury and urinary mercury were detected before application, at day 1, 4, and 7 after application, at day 1 and 14 after discontinuation. Urinary mercury was also detected at 28 after discontinuation and 3 months after discontinuation. The information of wound, days of external application and the total dosage of external application were recorded before application, at day 1, 4, and 7 after application, as well as at day 1 after discontinuation. Then a discriminant model covering potential safety factors was set up by PLSDA after screening safety indices with important effects. The applicability of the model was assessed using area under ROC curve. Potential safety factors were assessed using variable importance in the projection (VIP).
RESULTSUrinary β2-microglobulin (β2-MG), urinary N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (NAG), 24 h urinary protein, and urinary α1-microglobulin (α1-MG) were greatly affected by external use of JP in treating plasma cell mastitis. The accuracy rate of PLSDA discriminate model was 74. 00%. The sensitivity, specificity, and the area under ROC curve was 0. 7826, 0. 7037, and 0. 8084, respectively. Three factors with greater effect on the potential safety were screened as follows: pre-application volume of the sore cavity, days of external application, and the total dosage of external application.
CONCLUSIONSPLSDA method could be used in analyzing bioinformation of clinical Chinese medicine. Urinary β2-MG and urinary NAG were two main safety monitoring indices. Days of external application and the total dosage of external application were main factors influencing blood mercury and urine mercury. A safety classification simulation model of treating plasma cell mastitis by external therapy of JP was established by the two factors, which could be used to assess the safety of external application of JP to some extent.
