2.The Role of Event-Related Rumination and Perceived Social Support on Psychological Distress during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Results from Greater Daegu Region in South Korea
Psychiatry Investigation 2021;18(5):392-399
Objective:
Research on psychological distress from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis has increased significantly, but the factors that can exacerbate or mitigate such distress have remained underexplored. To address the research gap, this study examined whether two types of rumination and perceived social support predict psychological distress during the pandemic.
Methods:
Participants were recruited from communities of the greater Daegu area (n=316) where the first massive outbreak in South Korea occurred and most residents underwent substantial disruption of daily life. They completed self-report questionnaires that included measures of psychological distress, event-related rumination, and social support.
Results:
The hierarchical regression analysis showed that maladaptive intrusive rumination and perceived social support predicted increases and decreases in psychological distress, respectively, even when subjective severity of COVID-19-related experiences was controlled. Putatively adaptive type of rumination (i.e., deliberate rumination) was not a significant predictor concurrently.
Conclusion
This is among the early endeavors to comprehensively understand risk and protective factors associated with an effective coping strategy against the COVID-19 crisis. Our results indicate that intrusive rumination aggravates but social support mitigates psychological distress during the pandemic, indicating that we can better adapt by differently attending to recent experiences and maintaining perceived social support.

Journal of Korean Medical Science 2023;38(30):e227-
Background:
The World Health Organization (WHO) proposed a global action plan for dementia and aimed to have 75% of their member states formulating National Dementia Plans (NDPs) by 2025. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) proposed the ten key objectives of dementia policy in 2015. Among previous studies on NDPs, few studies have investigated measures for proper implementation of NDPs. This study aimed to compare the implementation basis and specific action plans of NDPs between the G7 countries and South Korea.
Methods:
We investigated the measures for proper implementation of the NDPs of G7 countries and South Korea. To compare the specific policy approaches, the seven action areas of the WHO action plan and the ten key objectives of dementia policy proposed by the OECD were integrated into 11 targets (prevention, diagnosis, awareness, caregiver support, appropriate environments, long-term care, health service, end-of-life care, care coordination, research and technology, information systems).
Results:
Although most NDPs included specific action plans of the 11 targets, caregiver support, safe environments, healthcare services, and end-of-life care were lacking in some NDPs. For implementation, some countries reinforced the policy priority of their NDPs by timely updates, evaluation, legislations, or head-of-state leadership. However, only three countries had a legislative basis, and three countries included outcome measures in their latest NDP.
Conclusion
Effective measures for feasible implementation are needed. The WHO should promote not only the establishment of NDPs, but also their proper implementation.

Obstetrics & Gynecology Science 2020;63(6):719-725
Objective:
This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between obesity and pelvic organ prolapse (POP), both anatomically and symptomatically, in Korean women.
Methods:
We retrospectively reviewed 476 women who visited the urogynecology clinic between January 2013 and December 2016. All the enrolled women were Korean. We sought to evaluate the relationship between obesity and POP, both anatomically and symptomatically, by using a validated tool. Anatomic assessment was performed by a standardized Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (POP-Q) system and symptomatic assessment was performed by a Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory (PFDI)-20 questionnaire. Obesity measurement was performed by measuring body mass index (BMI).
Results:
We enrolled 476 women in our study. There was no statistically significant correlation between BMI and POP-Q or PFDI-20 scores: Ba (P=0.633), Bp (P=0.363), C (P=0.277), Pelvic Organ Prolapse Distress Inventory-6 (P=0.286), Colorectal Anal Distress Inventory-8 (P=0.960), Urinary Distress Inventory-6 (P=0.355), and PFDI-20 (P=0.355). In addition, there was no statistically significant correlation between BMI and POP-Q or PFDI-20 in patients with severe (greater than stage III) POP. We also separately analyzed the differences in the POP-Q points and PFDI-20 scores between the obese and non-obese groups. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups.
Conclusion
We evaluated the correlation between obesity and POP using a validated tool. The present study revealed no significant correlation between obesity and POP severity anatomically or symptomatically in Korean women. This contrasts the results of most studies of Western women. Further studies in Asian women are required in order to confirm our results.

7.Initial Psychometric Properties of the Korean Altman Self-Rating Mania Scale: Preliminary Validation Study in a Non-Clinical Sample.
Psychiatry Investigation 2017;14(5):562-567
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the reliability and validity of the Korean Altman Self-Rating Mania Scale (K-ASRM) in a large sample of Korean non-clinical undergraduates. METHODS: Participants (n=1,091) filled out the K-ASRM with other self-report questionnaires assessing bipolarity, mood symptoms and affect. Reliability test, exploratory factor analysis and correlation analyses were conducted to examine its psychometric properties. RESULTS: The reliability of the K-ASRM was adequate (Cronbach’s α=0.73, item-to-total correlation 0.53–0.78) and the exploratory factor analysis yielded one factor of mania. The K-ASRM demonstrated significant associations with measures of hypomanic personality (r=0.33), lifetime history of hypomanic symptoms (r=0.23). Also, the K-ASRM was significantly correlated with positive affect (r=0.53), negative affect (r=−0.17) and depressive symptoms (r=−0.35). CONCLUSION: These results suggest preliminary possibility that the K-ASRM can be utilized as self-rating tool for mania in Korea as well as future directions for further validation.

Psychiatry Investigation 2022;19(10):814-823
Objective:
The Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC) proposed outcome measures for clinical trials on Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in the Therapeutic Area User Guide for AD (TAUG-AD). To investigate how well the clinical trials on AD registered in the ClinicalTrials.gov complied with the recommendations on outcome measures by the CDISC.
Methods:
We compared the outcome measures proposed in the TAUG-AD version 2.0.1 with those employed in the protocols of clinical trials on AD registered in ClinicalTrials.gov.
Results:
We analyzed 101 outcome measures from 305 protocols. The TAUG-AD listed ten scales for outcome measures of clinical trials on AD. The scales for cognition, activities of daily living, behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, and global severity listed in TAUG-AD were most frequently employed in the clinical trials on AD. However, TAUG-AD did not include any scale on quality of life. Also, several scales such as Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Alzheimer’s Disease Cooperative Study–Activities of Daily Living, and Cohen- Mansfield Agitation Inventory not listed in the TAUG-AD were commonly employed in the clinical trials on AD and changed over time.
Conclusion
To properly standardize the data from clinical trials on AD, the gap between the TAUG-AD and the measures employed in real-world clinical trials should be filled.

Journal of Korean Geriatric Psychiatry 2016;20(1):9-15
OBJECTIVE: This study was to investigate the factors that influence the propensity of Koreans in choosing care settings of dementia patients. METHODS: This study analyzed the data from the '2014 Nationwide Survey on Dementia Awareness of Koreans' that was conducted by the National Institute of Dementia. Korean's perception of care burden for dementia was measured with grading on its types. Also its influences on preference for care between facilities and homes were evaluated using multivariate analysis with socio-demographic characteristics. RESULTS: In terms of preferred care settings, respondents preferred facilities over homes in case of themselves and their family, respectively 77.5% and 68.2%. The preference for facilities was significantly influenced by the respondents' age for both themselves and their family. Additionally, the perception of relatively higher emotional and physical burden compared to economic burden significantly influenced preference for facilities for their family. CONCLUSION: Improving public awareness and setting-up a practical social supporting system are needed to reduce emotional and physical burden as well as economic burden of dementia. Furthermore, building up an appropriate and safer communities for dementia patients and their caregivers is much demanded for reducing their burdens.

Allergy, Asthma & Respiratory Disease 2013;1(4):357-361
PURPOSE: Mycoplasma pneumonia (MP) is a major cause of community-acquired pneumonia in children and young adults. We aimed to investigate the factors that may influence on the clinical manifestations of MP in children. METHODS: A total of 109 admitted children from October 2011 to February 2012 were prospectively enrolled with physical examination and laboratory tests (complete blood count, C-reactive protein [CRP], and particle agglutinin assay). The diagnosis of MP was made when there was an infiltration on the chest X-ray and the particle agglutination test was once over 1:640 or showed 4-fold increase in serial tests. They were grouped by age, fever duration after treatment, presence of pleural effusion and wheezing. RESULTS: Preschool children showed shorter duration of fever (P=0.001), more wheezing (P<0.001), lower segmented neutrophil (P<0.001), and lower CRP levels (P=0.004) compared to schoolchildren. Prolonged fever (>3 days) and pleural effusion were developed in children with higher CRP (P=0.018 and P=0.007). Wheezing has been developed in children with younger age (P=0.007). CONCLUSION: Younger age was a risk factor to develop wheezing in MP and prolonged fever and pleural effusion were more likely to develop in children with higher CRP.
