1.Effect of Nursing Professionalism and Organizational Communication on Intent to Stay in Geriatric Hospital Nurses

PURPOSE: This study was performed to measure nursing professionalism, organizational communication, and intent to stay, and investigate the relationship among these three variables in geriatric hospital nurses. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was done with the participation of 195 nurses working at 23 geriatric hospitals in B city of Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. Data were collected from January 19 to 25, 2018 using structured questionnaires and were analyzed using SPSS/WIN program. RESULTS: The geriatric hospital nurses' scores for nursing professionalism, organizational communication, and intent to stay were relatively lower than those of general hospital nurses. Each of these three variables was differently perceived according to participants' general characteristics but there was a positive correlation between them. The factors influencing intent to stay were organizational communication, age and through newspapers/advertising (one of motivations for working at geriatric hospitals). These three variables explained 47% of intent to stay. CONCLUSION: To increase intent to stay in geriatric hospital nurses, nursing or hospital managers must develop and apply programs that help improve nurses' professionalism and organizational communication. Especially geriatric hospital nursing managers should try to provide organizational communication enhancement programs for young and inexperienced nurses.

2.Effects of Organizational Silence and Organizational Justice on Bullying among Hospital Nurses at Work

Purpose:
This study aimed to investigate the effects of organizational silence and organizational justice on bullying among hospital nurses in their workplace.
Methods:
This study was a cross-sectional survey conducted on 235 full-time nurses in Korea. Data were collected online using Google Docs from 14 June to 9 July 2021.
Results:
Nurses who were male, below 30 years of age, unmarried, had less than five years of clinical experience, had worked in special departments, and had no prior experience with workplace bullying were more vulnerable to workplace bullying than nurses with other characteristics. Workplace bullying of hospital nurses was positively correlated with their acquiescent silence and defensive silence, and negatively correlated with their procedural justice and interactional justice. Factors influencing workplace bullying of hospital nurses were defensive silence, bullying experience (have), distributive justice, acquiescent silence, gender (male), and marital status (single). These six variables explained 55% of workplace bullying in hospital nurses.
Conclusion
Based on the results of this study, it could be concluded that nursing managers should keep organizational silence low, organizational justice high, and pay more attention to nurses who are vulnerable to bullying in their workplace.
3.Oxidative Stress Levels in Aqueous Humor from High Myopic Patients.

PURPOSE: To compare oxidative stress status in the aqueous humor of highly myopic eyes and control eyes. METHODS: Aqueous humor samples were collected from 15 highly myopic eyes (high myopia group) and 23 cataractous eyes (control group) during cataract surgery. Central corneal thickness, corneal endothelial cell density, hexagonality of corneal endothelial cells, and cell area of corneal endothelial cells were measured using specular microscopy. Axial length was measured using ultrasound biometry. 8-Hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and malondialdehyde levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: 8-OHdG level was lower in the aqueous humor of myopic patients than in that of control group (p = 0.014) and was positively correlated with central corneal thickness and negatively correlated with axial length (r = 0.511, p = 0.02; r = -0.382, p < 0.001). There was no correlation between 8-OHdG level and corneal endothelial cell density, hexagonality, or cell area. Malondialdehyde level did not show any correlation with any parameters evaluated. CONCLUSIONS: 8-OHdG might be a sensitive biomarker for evaluating oxidative stress status in the eye. Oxidative stress level was lower in the aqueous humor of highly myopic eyes compared to that in control eyes, which indicates lower metabolic activity in these eyes.

Mucin-producing tumors of the pancreas were first reported by Ohhashi and Takagi in 1980. Since then, many cases of intraductal papillary mucinous tumor (IPMT) of the pancreas, which is almost homonymous to mucin-producing tumors of the pancreas, have been reported. IPMTs are generally regarded as tumors with a favorable prognosis. Some IPMTs have invasiveness and this is always associated with a poor prognosis. Most IPMTs arise from the main pancreatic duct and IPMTs arising from the accessory pancreatic duct are relatively rare. Only 6 cases have been reported in the literature so far. Our patient was a 43-year old man who was admitted to the hospital due to recurrent pancreatitis. An endoscopic retrograde pancreatography revealed a patulous minor papilla orifice extruding mucin and a cystic lesion in a branch of the accessory duct. A pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed and a pathologic examination of the resected specimen showed intraductal papaillary mucinous neoplasm, low grade malignancy, in the accessory pancreatic duct and its branch. We herein report this interesting case with a review of the literature.

6.Hypoxia-dependent mitochondrial fission regulates endothelial progenitor cell migration, invasion, and tube formation.

Tumor undergo uncontrolled, excessive proliferation leads to hypoxic microenvironment. To fulfill their demand for nutrient, and oxygen, tumor angiogenesis is required. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) have been known to the main source of angiogenesis because of their potential to differentiation into endothelial cells. Therefore, understanding the mechanism of EPC-mediated angiogenesis in hypoxia is critical for development of cancer therapy. Recently, mitochondrial dynamics has emerged as a critical mechanism for cellular function and differentiation under hypoxic conditions. However, the role of mitochondrial dynamics in hypoxia-induced angiogenesis remains to be elucidated. In this study, we demonstrated that hypoxia-induced mitochondrial fission accelerates EPCs bioactivities. We first investigated the effect of hypoxia on EPC-mediated angiogenesis. Cell migration, invasion, and tube formation was significantly increased under hypoxic conditions; expression of EPC surface markers was unchanged. And mitochondrial fission was induced by hypoxia time-dependent manner. We found that hypoxia-induced mitochondrial fission was triggered by dynamin-related protein Drp1, specifically, phosphorylated DRP1 at Ser637, a suppression marker for mitochondrial fission, was impaired in hypoxia time-dependent manner. To confirm the role of DRP1 in EPC-mediated angiogenesis, we analyzed cell bioactivities using Mdivi-1, a selective DRP1 inhibitor, and DRP1 siRNA. DRP1 silencing or Mdivi-1 treatment dramatically reduced cell migration, invasion, and tube formation in EPCs, but the expression of EPC surface markers was unchanged. In conclusion, we uncovered a novel role of mitochondrial fission in hypoxia-induced angiogenesis. Therefore, we suggest that specific modulation of DRP1-mediated mitochondrial dynamics may be a potential therapeutic strategy in EPC-mediated tumor angiogenesis.
