OBJECTIVETo investigate the impact of experimental varicocele (EV) on the ipsilateral testis in rats.
METHODSEV was induced by partial ligation of the left renal vein in male SD rats, the control rats subjected to sham operation, and the testes of the EV models and controls were extirpated 6, 12, and 18 weeks later. Johnson's score, ultrastructure of seminiferous tubules, intratesticular testosterone concentration (ITC) and germ cell apoptotic index (AI) of each left testis were evaluated.
RESULTSJohnson's scores were (6.92 +/- 0.52), (4.83 +/- 0.41) and (2.95 +/- 0.26), ITCswere (6.32 +/- 0.85), (5.17 +/- 0.76) and (4.11 +/- 0.69) and AIs were (5.32 +/- 1.23), (15.21 +/- 0.97) and (21.13 +/- 1.12) respectively in the 6 w , 12 w and 18 w EV groups, significantly lower than in the corresponding control groups, (9.56 +/- 0.35, 9.63 +/- 0.31, 9.39 +/- 0.46), (9.64 +/- 1.23, 9.38 +/- 0.69, 9.73 +/- 0.49) and (3.21 +/- 1.15, 3.43 +/- 1.21, 3.61 +/- 1. 15) (P < 0.05), the former two showing a gradual decline while the latter a significant elevation with the increasing duration of varicocele. The damage to the ultrastructure of seminiferous tubules was aggravated with the prolonging of varicocele.
CONCLUSIONEV can cause a progressive decline of ITC, dyszoospermia and increased AI of germ cells.

Objective To investigate the relationship between drinking-water type of endemic arsenicosis and adult carotid artery atherosclerosis. Methods In 2009, 285 participants aged over 40 from drinking-water type of endemic arsenism areas and 293 residents aged over 40 from control areas were investigated in Yingxian county,Shanxi province. Portable-type B mode color ultrasound was used to examine the carotid artery of all participants. The carotid atherosclerosis were diagnosed and graded through the ultrasonograms. Content of water arsenic and hair arsenic of 10 people randomly selected in every villages were detected. Results A total of 5 villages with drinkingwater type of endemic arsenicosis as observation group and 5 villages without drinking-water type of endemic arsenicosis as control group were investigated. The prevalence rates of adult carotid atherosclerosis within observation group were 35.09%(20/57), 55.74%(34/61), 38.46%(20/52), 36.51%(23/63) and 46.15%(24/52), respectively, and standardized prevalence rates were 32.5%, 33.8%, 34.9%, 46.2% and 47.3%, respectively and the prevalence rates of adult carotid atherosclerosis within control group were 18.18%(10/55), 30.77%(16/52), 20.00%(10/50),18.67% (14/75) and 21.31% ( 13/61 ), respectively; the standardize prevalence rates were 22.4%, 17.7%, 10.7%,24.6%, 18.9%, respectively. The standardize prevalence rates were higher in observation group [39.50%(113/285) ]than that in control group[39.50%(113/285), T = 26, P < 0.01 ]. The severity of adult carotid atherosclerosis (composition of 4 - 7 scores ) was compared between observation group [ 17.70%(20/113 )] and control group [ 14.06% (9/64) ], and the difference was insignificant(x2 = 0.26, P > 0.05). Conclusions The prevalence rate of carotid atherosclerosis in drinking-water type of endemic arsenicosis areas is higher than that of the control areas. The study provides evidence that arsenic poisoning can cause atherosclerosis.

Aim To investigate the absorption characteristics of gallic acid in the intestine, and to provide a theoretical basis for improving the bioavailability of tannins. Methods Single-pass intestinal perfusion (SPIP) model was used for rat in situ and HPLC to determine the concentration of gallic acid. The absorption rate constant Ka and effective apparent permeability coefficient Peff of gallic acid in each intestinal segment were calculated. The effects of different intestinal segments, drug concentrations, pH value, P-glycoprotein (P-gp), and multidrug resistance protein2 (MRP2) on intestinal absorption were assessed. Results The absorption rate constant (Ka) of gallic acid decreased following the sequence of jejunum > duodenum > ileum ≈ colon. With the increase of drug concentration, there was no significant difference in the absorption of gallic acid. The acidic environment (pH 5. 5) was conducive to the absorption of gallic acid. After the addition of P-gp and MRP2 inhibitors, the absorption of gallic acid was significantly different from that without P-gp and MRP2 inhibitors (P < 0. 05). Conclusions Gallic acid can be well absorbed in the intestine of rats, and is best absorbed in jejunum. The absorption mechanism is determined to be passive diffusion. The gallic acid absorption process is affected by the efflux of P-gp and MRP2, which may be the P-gp and MRP2 substrates.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect and indication of one stage posterior debridement and bone grafting fusion and internal fixation for thoracic tuberculosis.
METHODSFrom January 2005 to May 2011,12 patients with thoracic tuberculosis were treated with one stage posterior debridement and pedicle screw fixation combined with regular anti-tuberculosis treatment before and after operation. There were 7 males and 5 females, with an average age of 45 years and average course of 15 months. Information of operative time, blood loss, bony fusion, local kyphosis and neurologic functional were evaluated.
RESULTSAll infective focus were thoroughly removed and bone graft obtained fusion. The mean of operative time and blood loss were 170 min (120-210 min) and 510 ml (200-1 000 ml),respectively. Cobb angle from (28.7 +/- 9.2) degrees preoperatively decreased to (8.2 +/- 3.5) degrees postoperatively(P<0.05). No kyphosis correction loss, tubercular recurrence or failure of internal fixation was found. According to Frankel grade to evaluate neurological function, all patients arrived to grade E.
CONCLUSIONOne stage posterior debridement and bone grafting fusion and internal fixation is an effective method in treating thoracic tuberculosis. It has advantages such as thorough debridement, short operative time, less blood loss, more kyphosis correction and higher bony fusion rate.

Objective:To investigate the related factors of vertebral body height reloss after pedicle screw fixation of thoracolumbar fracture and to determe the optimum prediction point. Methods:A retrospective case control study was made on 215 patients with thoracolumbar fracture admitted to Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University from January 2010 to December 2017. There were 155 males and 60 females, aged 21-80 years[(48.6±10.4)years]. According to Denis fracture classification, there were 73 patients with compression fractures(type A in 15 patients, type B in 51,type C in 7),135 burst fractures(type A in 28 patients, type B in 87,type C in 20)and flexion distraction fractures(type A in 4,type B in 2,type C in 1). All patients were treated by pedicle screw fixation. Follow-up lasted for 12- 48 months[(23.8±8.2)months]. Vertebral body height loss occurred in 86 patients(loss group),but did not in 129 patients(non-loss group). The two groups were compared concerning sex, age, osteoporosis self-assessment tool for Asians(OSTA),body mass index(BMI),fracture types, number of fractured vertebrae, preoperative sagittal Cobb angle, preoperative degree of vertebral compression, number of screws placed in injured vertebrae, extent of vertebral reset and other related factors. Univariate analysis was used to identify the correlation of those factors with vertebral body height reloss. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the independent factors for the height reloss with the receiver operating characteristic curve(ROC)and area under the curve(AUC)calculated to evaluate the optimum point in prediction of vertebral height reloss. Results:The two groups showed no significant differences in sex, age,BMI,fracture types, number of injured vertebrae, preoperative sagittal Cobb angle and number of screws placed in injured vertebrae( P>0.05),but the differences were statistically significant in OSTA,preoperative degree of vertebral compression and extent of vertebral reset( P<0.05). According to the univariate analysis,OSTA,preoperative degree of vertebral compression and extent of vertebral reset were significantly correlated with the occurrence of vertebral body height reloss( P<0.05). According to the multivariate Logistic regression,OSTA( OR=1.109,95% CI 0.527-0.685, P<0.05)and preoperative degree of vertebral compression( OR =0.038,95% CI 0.539-0.689, P<0.05)were significantly related to vertebral body height reloss. The AUC relating OSTA and preoperative degree of vertebral compression to vertebral body height reloss was 0.604 and 0.614,respectively. The optimum prediction point of OSTA and preoperative degree of vertebral compression for vertebral body height reloss was 1.9 and 31.3%,respectively. Conclusions:OSTA and the preoperative degree of vertebral compression are independent risk factors for vertebral body height reloss. OSTA≤1.9 or preoperative degree of vertebral compression ≥31.3% indicates a significantly higher risk of postoperative vertebral body height reloss.

OBJECTIVETo explore the prevalence of vision, mental, audibility, language, psychiatry, extremity, and influence factors in the 0 - 7 year olds.
METHODSA total number of 77,727 0 - 7 year old children living in Shenzhen city were tested with tree phase screening under the Chinese standard of evaluation in disabilities.
RESULTSThe prevalence of all disabilities was 5.59 per thousand (adjusted rate was 8.49 per thousand with a false negative of 3.1 per thousand ). The prevalence of mental disease was the highest (1.88 per thousand, with adjusted rate 3.43 per thousand ), the prevalence of language disability was 1.88 per thousand (including retarded language development, with adjusted rate 3.43 per thousand ). The prevalence rates of psychiatry, extremity and audibility disability were 1.59 per thousand, 1.56 per thousand, 1.11 per thousand respectively with of vision the lowest (0.37 per thousand ). The prevalence of all disabilities, audibility, language and mental was on the increase with age. The difference was statistically significant. Among all different age groups regarding psychiatric disease, the highest fell in the 2 - 4 year olds. The prevalence of extremity was not statistically different among age groups. The suspected agents of disease which occurred before or during pregnancy took up 45.7%.
CONCLUSIONThe prevalence of six kinds disabilities in Shenzhen was about 10 per thousand lower than that of the samples of the nation in 1989, but two times higher than that of similar studies in Japan. The prevalence rates of language and psychiatric disease were higher than that of the nation in 1989. The causation should be further studied.

Chinese Journal of Experimental and Clinical Virology 2003;17(3):217-221
BACKGROUNDTo explore the pathological features and pathogenesis of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) to provide evidence for the clinical treatment and prevention of SARS.
METHODSPathological features of 2 cases of full autopsy and 4 cases of needle biopsy tissue samples from the patients who died from SARS were studied by light and electron microscopy. The distribution and quantity of lymphocyte subpopulations in the lungs and immune organs from SARS patients were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. The location and semi-quantitative analysis of SARS coronavirus in the tissue specimens were studied by electron microscopy, in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry.
RESULTSIn total of 6 cases, diffuse alveolar damage and alveolar cell proliferation were common. The major pathological changes of 2 autopsy cases of SARS in lung tissues were acute pulmonary interstitial and alveolar exudative inflammation, and 2 autopsy and one biopsy lung tissues showed alveolar hyaline membrane formation. Terminal bronchiolar and alveolar desquamation of lung tissues in one autopsy and 2 biopsy cases were noted. Among 6 cases, 2 biopsy cases presented early pulmonary fibrosis and alveolar organization. Meanwhile, the immune organs, including lymph nodes and spleens from 2 autopsy cases of SARS whose disease courses were less than 12 days showed extensive hemorrhagic necrosis, reactive macrophage/histocyte proliferation, with relative depression of mononuclear and granulocytic clones in the bone marrows. However, spleen and bone marrow biopsy tissue samples from 4 dead SARS cases whose clinical course lasted from 21 to 40 days presented repairing changes. SARS coronaviruses were mainly identified in type I and II alveolar epithelia, macrophages, and endothelia; meanwhile, some renal tubular epithelial cells, cardiomyocytes, mucosal and crypt epithelial cells of gastrointestinal tracts, parenchymal cells in adrenal glands, lymphocytes, testicular epithelial cells and Leydig's cells were also detected by electron microscopy combined with in situ hybridization. The semi-quantitative analysis of lymphocyte subpopulations revealed that the proportion of CD8+ T lymphocytes were about 80% of the total infiltrative inflammatory cells in the pulmonary interstitium, with a few CD4+ lymphocytes CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ or CD20+ lymphocyte subpopulations were obviously decreased and there was imbalance in number and proportion, while CD57+, CD68+, S-100+ and HLA-DR+ cells were relatively increased in lymph nodes and spleens.
CONCLUSIONSHistologically, the pulmonary changes could be divided into acute inflammatory exudative, terminal bronchiolar and alveolar desquamative and proliferative repair stages or types during the pathological process of SARS. SARS coronavirus was found in multi-target cells in vivo, which means that SARS coronavirus might cause multi-organ damages which were predominant in lungs. There were varying degrees of decrease and imbalance in number and proportion of lymphocyte subpopulations in the immune organs of the patients with SARS. However, these changes may be reversible. It was found that cellular immune responses were predominant in the lungs of SARS cases, which might play an important role in getting rid of coronaviruses in infected cells and inducing immune mediated injury.
