MicroRNAs (miRs) play an important role in regulating diverse cellular processes. It has been reported that miRs are associated with the formation and maturation of erythrocytes, and the expression of globin genes at post-transcriptional level.Compared with normal human enrythrocytes, various miRs are altered in the patients with thalassemia. These changes also happen in the patients with diverse clinical manifestations. In this paper, we systematically summarized the recent progress about the expression dysregulation of miRs in β-thalassemia and their roles in regulating the levels of γ-globin and fetal hemoglobin.During β-like globin gene expression, miRs directly or indirectly regulate the levels of erythroid-specific transcription factors through post-transcriptional action, such as B-cell lymphoma 11A (BCL11A), myeloblastosis oncogene (MYB), specificity protein 1 (Sp1), Kruppel-like factor 3 (KLF3) and GATA1.These effects subsequently regulate the switch between γ-and β-globin gene expression and affect fetal hemoglobin production.Targeting miRs might be a novel therapeutic strategy for β-thalassmeia.

OBJECTIVEThis preliminary study aims to investigate the effects of titanium and titanium alloy micro-nano-dimensional topography on the biological behavior of osteoblasts in vitro.
METHODSElectrolytic etching (EE) method was used to produce micro-nano dimensional titanium surfaces. The surfaces were observed to determine their effects on the adhesion, proliferation, cell morphology, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of osteoblasts.
RESULTSThe surfaces of the titanium and titanium alloy groups exhibited higher adhesion and proliferation of osteoblasts than those of the mechanical group. The titanium surface was covered with a group of cells, a large number of filopodia, and functional particles. The ALP activity of the titanium group was significantly higher than that of the titanium alloy and mechanical groups.
CONCLUSIONEE method in pure titanium and titanium alloy surfaces result in bowl-like nests and nanostructures of different diameters and depths. The diameters of the pure titanium and titanium alloy surfaces range from 30 to 50 μm and 5 to 8 μm, respectively. The former is more conducive to promote the proliferation and differentiation of cells.

Objective:To compare the dosimetry and efficacy of intracavitary brachytherapy (ICBT) and intracavitary/interstitial brachytherapy (IC+ ISBT) based on CT image guidance in the treatment of stage Ⅲ B cervical cancer. Methods:Clinical data of 93 patients with stage Ⅲ B cervical cancer treated in Department of Radiotherapy of Jilin Cancer Hospital from June 2014 to February 2017 were analyzed retrospectively. According to the results of Gynecological examination and pelvic MRI before brachytherapy, confirming the size of residual tumor and the degree of parauterine infiltration, all patients were divided into the ICBT and IC+ ISBT groups. The D 90%, D 100%, V 100% and D 2cm 3 of bladder and rectum were compared, and the short-term and long-term efficacy was observed between two groups. Results:The median follow-up time was 60 months. The 5-year local control rate, distant metastasis-free survival rate and overall survival rate of all patients were 83%, 71% and 68%, respectively. Compared with the ICBT group, HR-CTV D 90% in the IC+ ISBT group was all more than 85 Gy, while there was no significant difference between two groups ( P=0.188). The D 2cm 3 of bladder and rectum in the IC+ ISBT group was significantly decreased by 7 Gy and 8 Gy (both P<0.01), and the distant metastasis-free survival rate was significantly improved ( P=0.009). The 5-year local control rate in the HR-CTV volume>60 cm 3 in the IC+ ISBT group was significantly higher than that in the IC group ( P=0.029). Conclusion:For patients with Ⅲ B cervical cancer, IC+ ISBT can not only ensure target coverage, but also significantly reduce the incidence of distant metastasis and the dose of organs at risk, and significantly improve the local control rate of large tumors.

Objective:To evaluate early residual myocardial ischemia after successful percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with coronary artery disease by using myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) and investigate independent influencing factors of early residual myocardial ischemia. Methods:From January 2020 to December 2022, 127 patients (107 males, 20 females; age (60.3±9.6) years) with coronary artery disease who underwent PCI complete revascularization at the First People′s Hospital of Changzhou were consecutively enrolled prospectively. All patients underwent rest and stress MPI within 1-3 months after PCI. Reversible myocardial perfusion defect in the blood supply area of the culprit vessels in stress and rest MPI was defined as early residual myocardial ischemia after PCI. Accordingly, the culprit vessels undergoing PCI were divided into residual ischemic group and non-ischemic group. Differences of cardiovascular examination between two groups were compared ( χ2 test), such as proportion of culprit vessels with severe stenosis (≥90%), proportion of bifurcation lesions, and proportion of diffuse coronary disease. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify influencing factors for early residual myocardial ischemia. Results:Among 148 culprit vessels undergoing PCI in 127 patients, early residual myocardial ischemia was present in 49 vessels (33.1%, 49/148). The proportion of culprit vessels with severe stenosis before PCI in residual ischemia group was higher than that in non-ischemia group (69.4%(34/49) and 49.5%(49/99); χ2=5.27, P=0.022). The proportion of bifurcation lesions in residual ischemic group was also higher than that in non-ischemic group (28.6%(14/49) and 10.1%(10/99); χ2=8.23, P=0.004), with a slightly higher proportion of diffuse coronary disease compared to non-ischemic group (14.3%(7/49) and 4.0%(4/99); χ2=3.62, P=0.057). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that bifurcation lesion (odds ratio ( OR)=4.087, 95% CI: 1.615-10.344, P=0.003) and diffuse coronary disease ( OR=4.208, 95% CI: 1.115-15.878, P=0.034) were independent influencing factors for early residual myocardial ischemia. Conclusions:Early residual myocardial ischemia is still present in about 1/3 of the culprit vessels after PCI complete revascularization. Bifurcation lesion and diffuse coronary disease are independent influencing factors for early residual myocardial ischemia in culprit vessels.

Occlusal disorder is an abnormal condition in which the static and dynamic relations between the upper and lower teeth are not well aligned . The most common occlusal disorder in clinical practice is the inability to reach the intercuspal position due to early contact of individual points or occlusal interference due to occlusal high points, which can lead to periodontal tissue damage, decreased masticatory function, temporomandibular joint and muscle discomfort; these results can occur through the overactivation of the locus coeruleus-sympathetic-adrenal medullary system and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis induce elevated serum corticosteroid levels, which leads to chronic stress in the body. This article reviews the effects of chronic stress caused by occlusal disorder on bone tissue, stomatognathic system, emotional health and cognitive function. It has been found that occlusal disorders not only result in the loss of bone in the oral cavity, the reduction of bone mass in the whole body and damage to the local function of the stomatognathic system but also negatively affect the body’s anxiety, sleep, cognitive function and spatial memory ability as a result of the neuroendocrine changes . In recent years, concern about occlusal disorders has been on the rise. Early detection and timely adjustment of uncoordinated occlusion has become an issue that cannot be ignored in the clinic.

As the world’s population ages, age-related cognitive decline and dementia are becoming important challenges for geriatric care. Despite the ongoing search for solutions to address cognitive decline, effective interventions have not yet been established. There is increasing evidence from clinical, epidemiological, and animal studies that masticatory dysfunction due to occlusal disharmony is a risk factor for cognitive decline and an increased incidence of dementia. The mechanisms may involve altered nutritional intake, decreased cerebral blood flow, chronic stress, and hippocampal morphological function. These findings suggest that maintaining and adequately restoring the entire masticatory system has a positive impact for the prevention of cognitive decline.
