Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition 1997;0(01):-
Objective: To study the protective effects of L-Carnitine(LC) against the kidney damage induced by cisplatin(DDP).Methods: 36 Female adult Wistar rats were randomly divided into Control group,DDP group and LC+DDP group.Control group and DDP group were fed a basic diet, while LC+DDP group were added 1%LC.After 7 days,DDP group and LC+DDP group received cisplatin i.p.(5 mg/kg body weight),while Control group received normal saline i.p.After 4 days, rats were killed, the change of serum Cr and BUN,and tissue MDA and GSH in kidney were measured and the kidney structure was also observed. Results: Compared with DDP group, the contents of serum Cr、BUN and kidney tissue MDA of LC+DDP group declined very significantly, while the contents of kidney tissue GSH increased significantly. The pathological slice indicated that the renal structure of LC+DDP group was significantly improved. Conclusion: Dietary supplementation with LC might protect kidney against the damage induced by cisplatin in some extent, which might be partially correlative with the antioxidative effects of LC.
2.Effects of Grape Seed Proanthocyanidin and Casein Peptide on the liver function and protein nutritional status in rats with radiation injury
Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition 1997;0(03):-
Objective: To investigate the effects of grape seed proanthocyanidin(GSP) and casein peptide on the liver function and protein nutritional status in rays irradiated rats. Methods: Adult wistar rats were randomized into four groups with 20 rats in each group including normal control, radiation control, GSP and GSP+casein peptide combined groups. The GSP group was fed with basic diet containing 1% GSP, the combined group was fed with basic diet containing 1% GSP plus 5% casein peptide. Animals except normal control were irradiated by 60 Co? rays(7Gy) 10 days later. 6 survivors were randomly selected from each group and killed on the 7 th d after radiation. The levels of the total protein (TP) and the albumin (ALB), the activities of the glutamate pyruvate transaminase(GPT) and the glutamate oxaloacetale transaminase(GOT) in serum were measured. The change of the body weight of the animals was observed during the experiment time. Results: After radiation the body weight of the rats dropped sharply. The loss of the weight in combined group were significantly lower than in radiation control group and in GSP group(P
3.Protective action of grape seed proanthocyanidins combined With casein on radiation damage of rats
Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2005;9(11):210-211
BACKGROUND: A great deal of free radicals can be induced, which results in peroxidation of the whole body. The antioxidant activity and the abilities of scavenging free radicals of proanthocyanidins(GSP) have been well documented, but related researches about the protective role in radiation damage were less reported.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the protective role of GSP combined with casein in 60Co-y radiation-induced peroxidative damage.DESIGN: Observing and comparative study based on animal model.SETTING: Nutrition Department of Daping Hospital Affiliated to the Third Military Medical College of Chinese PLA.MATERIALS: This study was carried out in the Third Institution of Field Operation Surgery, the Third Military Medical College of Chinese PLA.Eighty healthy Wistar rats, clearage, were adopted, ith weight from 180 to 220 g,half male and half female were adopted.METHODS: Rats were divided into four groups: normal control group, irradiation group,GSP group and GSP + casine group with 20 rats each. Rats in GSP group were fed routinely and supplemented with 1% GSP for 10days,which was replaced by 1% GSP and 5% casein. All rats except those of control group were exposed to whole-body 60Co-g amma-radiation at a dose of 7 Gy. Seven days later,6 survival rats randomly selected from each group were killed.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The level of serum malondialdehyde (MDA), activities of serum superoxide dismutase(SOD),spleen index and the number of peripheral white blood cell(WBC).RESULTS: Serum MDA was obviously increased, accompanied by obviously attenuated SOD activity after irradiation; the level of MDA in both GSP group and combined group was found lower than that in irradiation group with statistical significance between them(P<0.01), the activity of SOD was significantly higher than that of irradiation group(P<0.01 ) . Markedly atrophic pathological change in spleen could be observed in irradiated rats, and meanwhile spleen index declined with the number of WBC notably decreased. But spleen index in both GSP group and combining group was markedly higher than irradiation group(P<0.05),and the same comparing result could also be found in the number of WBC(P<0.01 ).CONCLUSION: Peroxidative impairments could be obviously attenuated, and decrement of WBC could also be improved by single GSP or alternatively GSP combined with casein, with the latter showing greater effects in respect of improving immune function following irradiation, cellular chemical imbalance, and consequently the life quality.

Objective: To study the hypoglycemic effects of chromium-enriched compound acidophilous milk in rats with hyperglycemia. Methods: 120 adult Wister rats were randomly divided into Control group, DM group, therapy group and protective therapy group. Each group were fed a basic diet and Control group were intragastric administration with sodium chloride,DM group and therapy group were intragastric administration with ordinary acidophilous milk and protective therapy group were intragastric administration with chromium-enriched compound acidophilous milk. After 15 days, the rats of DM group, therapy group and protective therapy group were given a single shot of alloxan (50 mg per 1 kg), while Control group was given a single shot of sodium chloride (50 mg per 1 kg). After the diabetic model had been induced by alloxan, the rats of therapy group were intragastric administration with chromium-enriched compound acidophilous milk, and other groups had no change. The blood-fasting sugar, sugar tolerance, and glycosylated hemoglobin were examined. Results: When compared with protective therapy group, the differences of blood-fasting sugar of DM group and therapy group were significant (P

The significance of the blood glutathion reductase activity coeff i-.cient (BGR-AC) as the guide line to assess riboflavin status in 28 radar operators was studied by comparing with the amount of their urinary excreted riboflavin. The 28 subjects were randomized into 4 groups and the riboflavin intake was 0.53.mg,1.0 mg,2.0 mg,and 3.0 mg respectively. It was found that there was a significant negative correlation between BGR-AC and urinary excretion of riboflavin, and with the incrase of riboflavin intake, there was a significant decrease of BGR-AC in Groups Ⅰ,Ⅱ,and Ⅲ though the difference between Group Ⅲ and Group Ⅳ was insigificant. On the basis of the BGR-AC values of the 4 groups,an exponential equation was established which tells the riboflavin requirement of radar operators. It is defined that when BGR-AC is smaller than equal to 1.24,it is normal and when it is larger than 1.24,it means abnormal riboflavin status of the individual.

Objective To observe the effect of glutamine on gut barrier function and antioxidative capacity in rats with radiation damage. Methods A total of 30 healthy Wistar male rats were randomly divided into three groups: control group, GLN enriched group(+GLN) and GLN free group( GLN). Rats in control and GLN group were fed with a basic diet, while 3% GLN was added into the diet of the +GLN group. On the 15th day, rats in GLN and +GLN groups received 9.0 Gy 60 Co ? irradiation in total body. The rate of the gut bacterial translocation and the level of endotoxin, GSH and SOD in the serum were determined at the end of the experiment. Results The rate of bacterial translocation and serum endoxin level were significantly lower in +GLN than in GLN, and GSH and SOD levels in serum were significantly higher in +GLN than in GLN. Conclusion Glutamine supplement is helpful to protect the gut barrier function and improve the antioxidation capacity in rats with radiation injury.
