Castor(Ricinus communis L.),a high energy-stored and industrial raw-material plant species,is of great value in its application.Progresses in castor biotechnology were summarized in terms of tissue culture and genetic transformation. The results of studies on tissue culture indicated that application of TDZ(thiadiazuron) gave the maximum rate of shoot proliferation in various exogenous hormones when embryo axis was used as explant. On this ground, the in vitro regeneration system was established. The studies on castor genetic transformation showed that the Agrobaterium-mediated method was the most suitable one in different castor transformation methods. The hygromycin is suitable to selection of castor transfomants while castor embryo axis is insensitive to kanamycin. The possibilities of breeding of new castor varieties and improvement of castor production via biotechnology were also discussed.

TTI gene coding for Tsetse thrombin inhibitor was modified with E.coli bias codon and expressed in Escherichia coli with high efficiency.Recombinant protein was purified to more than 98% purity.Assay for enzyme activity determination was set up.The result showed that the fusion protein exhibited inhibiting activity for thrombin.Inhibitory rate of purified TTI was 73% when concentration of thrombin and substrate was 10U/ml and 250?mol/L respectively.Inhibition pattern was determined as competitive with Ki at 35?mol/L.

OBJECTIVETo observe the efficacy of Xingnaojing Injection (XI) in treatment of sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE).
METHODSTotally 65 SAE patients were retrospectively analyzed at EICU from September 2010 to September 2013. They were assigned to the control group (32 cases) and the treatment group (33 cases) according to whether they received XI. Patients in the control group received anti-infection and symptomatic support, while those in the treatment group were intravenously injected with XI at 20 mL per day for additional 7-10 days. The fever clearance time, Glasgow coma scale (GCS), C-reactive protein (CRP), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), and improvement of electroen-cephalogram (EEG) were observed in the two groups.
RESULTSCompared with the control group, the fever clearance time was shortened, CRP levels decreased, GCS score and efficacy of EEG was alleviated in the treatment group after treatment with statistical difference (P < 0.05). No adverse reaction occurred during medication.
CONCLUSIONX1 was safe and effective in treatment of SAE.

Objective To evaluate the value and the expression of Axl receptor tyrosine kinase (AxlTK) in renal pathology of lupus nephritis (LN) patients. Methods The expression of AxlTK were detected in 29 LN and 10 primary nephritic syndrome (NS) patients using immunohistochemistry in renal tissue. The correlations between the levels of AxlTK on glomeruli and clinical manifestations, laboratory parameters, disease activity, and renal pathology in LN patients were investigated. T test and single factor analysis of variance were used tp compare between groups, and Pearson or Spearman test was used for correlation analysis. Results AxlTK was extensively expressed on surface of mesangial cells, endothelial cells in glomeruli. There was more expression of AxlTK on mesangial cells in LN patients [(7.0 ±2.2)×10-2] than that in primary NS patients [(3.1 ±1.2) ×10-2] (t=5.382, P<0.01). The expression of AxlTK in the glomeruli of LN patients with oral ulcers is higher than that in patients without of ulcers (t=2.259, P=0.032), and it was positively correlated with the anti-nucleosome antibody (AnuA) level in patients (r=0.488, P=0.017). The expression of AxlTK on glomeruli were higher in class Ⅳ and classⅢ of LN patients than that of class Ⅴ, but there was no statistically significant difference between them (P>0.05). Conclusion The expression of Axl TK in glomerular is significantly increased in glomeruli in LN patients. The expression level of AxlTK on glomeruli is correlated with the occurrence of oral ulcers and AnuA. The level of AxlTK expression is related to pathological categories of kidney in LN patients. The results of this study suggest that AxlTK might participate in the pathogenesis of LN.

Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of long-time needle retaining at scalp acupoints plus body acupuncture in treating motor dysfunction in the sub-acute stage of cerebral stroke.Method A hundred patients in sub-acute stage of cerebral infarction or hemorrhage scored 4-24 by the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) were randomized into a treatment group and a control group, 50 cases in each group. The control group was intervened by dry rehabilitation training, while the treatment group was additionally intervened by long-time needle retaining at scalp acupoints (6-8 h) plus body acupuncture. The neural functional deficit, motor function, and activities of daily life were estimated and compared respectively by using NIHSS, Fugl-Meyer Assessment Scale (FMA), and Barthel Index (BI).Result The NIHSS score was significantly changed in the treatment group after 1 treatment course (P<0.05). After 2 treatment courses, the NIHSS scores were significantly changed in both groups compared to that before treatment (P<0.05). The FMA and BI scores were remarkably changed in both groups respectively after 1 and 2 treatment courses compared to that before treatment (P<0.05). After 2 treatment courses, there were significant differences in comparing the NIHSS score and BI score between the two groups. Conclusion Long-time needle retaining at Scalp acupoints plus body acupuncture can improve the neural function deficit, motor function, and activities of daily life in sub-acute stage of cerebral stroke.

Objective To observe the outcome of patients with ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP) after amniotic membrane grafting or penetrating keratoplasty.Design Retrospective, noncomparative case series.Participants 3 consecutive OCP patients (4 eyes),were included. Methods For 3 patients (4 eyes) in this study, preoperative visual acuity was from HM/5 cm to HM/10 cm.The symblepharon (gradeⅢ) of 2 patients (3 eyes) were detached and amniotic membrane was transplanted, and bandage contact lens were used till 2 months after operations. The other patient (1 eye) was undergone penetrating keratoplasty with glycerol-cryopreserved cornea because of corneal ulcer and perforation.Main Outcome Measures Visual acuity, recovering of conjunctiva and cornea. Results Am- niotic membrane dissolved about 1 month after operation in 2 patients (3 eyes).Symblepharon changed from gradeⅢto gradeⅡ,visual acuity increased to 0.04-0.05,central corneal epithelium was regenerated significantly, and a little new vessel appeared at corneal lim- bus in 2 patients (2 eyes). The graft deliquesced in the patient with penetrating keratoplasty at 20 days after operation and undergone penetrating keratoplasty again after 1 month. In this patient, the graft molten induced the ocular contents run-off and became eyeball at- rophy eventually. Conclusion Our small sample study shows that the symblepharon detachment and amniotic membrane transplantation is effective for improving visual acuity in OCP with ocular surface dysfunction. However, because of various factors, penetrating kerato- plasty is ineffective for OCP with perforating corneal ulcer.
