Objective To explore the related factors for the prognosis in elderly cancer patients with cerebral metastases,to study the adaptability of brain metastasis in recursive partitioning analysis (RPA)and the prognosis Assessment (GPA) Scale,in order to provide the basis for the prognosis assessment and treatment in the elderly patients with brain metastasis.Methods A retrospective analysis was studied in 102 elderly cancer patients with brain metastasis (aged 60 years and over) with complete follow-up data in our hospital from January 2005 to January 2012.Survival analysis was performed by using the Kaplan-Meier method.Univariate analysis of ethnicity,age,Karnofsky score,gender,smoking,primary tumor origin,the number of intracranial metastatic tumor,intracranial and extracranial metastasis,the efficacy of treatment for primary tumor,the treatment of brain metastases were analyzed by Log-rank test.Results The median survival time was 6 months.The 6-month and 12-month survival rates were 54.90％ and 16.67％ respectively.Univariate analysis showed that Karnofsky score,smoking,the number of intracranial metastatic tumor,time to diagnosis and treatment,the efficacy of treatment for primary tumor and other underlying diseases were the relative factors for prognosis of elderly cancer patients with brain metastases (x2 =20.828,5.737,7.395,5.379,11.556,6.844,all P＜0.05).Cox multivariate regression analysis showed that the Karnofsky score,the number of intracranial metastatic tumor,the efficacy of treatment for primary tumor and other underlying diseases were the independent prognostic factors (all P＜0.05).The median survival periods in RPA class Ⅰ,Ⅱ,Ⅲ were 11,7,4 month respectively (x2 =27.358,P＜0.001).The median survival periods in GPA class Ⅰ,Ⅱ,Ⅲ-Ⅳ were 5,8,13 months respectively (x2 =29.570,P＜0.001).Conclusions Karnofsky score,the number of intracranial metastatic tumor,the efficacy of treatment for primary tumor and other underlying diseases are the independent factors for the prognosis in elderly cancer patients with cerebral metastases.RPA and GPA classification have a good adaptability in elderly patients with brain metastases.

Nine compounds were isolated from the n-butanol fraction of 95% ethanol extract of the fruit of Alpinia oxyphylla Miq. with a combination of various chromatographic approaches, including MDS resin, silica gel, reverse phase C18 and preparative HPLC. On the basis of spectroscopic data analysis, they were elucidated as (1R, 4R, 10R)-1β, 4α-dihydroxy-11, 12, 13-trinor-5, 6-eudesmen-7-one (1), 1β, 4β-dihydroxy-11, 12, 13-trinor-8, 9-eudesmen-7-one (2), oxyphyllenone A (3), oxyphyllenone B (4), rhamnocitrin (5), staphylionoside D (6), benzyl-1-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (7), 2-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1S)-phenylethylene glycol (8), and (S)-1-phenylethyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (9). Among them, compound 1 is a new sesquiterpene, named as oxyphyllenone C; compounds 8 and 9 are new natural products; compounds 2 and 6 were isolated from the genus Alpinia for the first time, and compound 7 was isolated from A. oxyphylla for the first time.

Objective To investigate the potential relationship between initial 131Ⅰ uptake by lung metastases from differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) and treatment outcomes. Methods From 1997 to 2009, 41 patients with DTC lung metastases were treated in the authors' department. 131Ⅰ whole body scan (WBS), serum Tg levels and other imaging results were analyzed to evaluate the therapeutic effects. Complete response (CR) or partial response (PR) was considered to be effective. The x2 test and correlation analysis were performed using SPSS 11.5 software package. Results 131 Ⅰ treatment was effective in 63% (26/41) patients with DTC lung metastases, CR in 8 patients and PR in 18 patients. In other 37% ( 15/41 ) patients, 131Ⅰ treatment was ineffective, including one case died of distant metastases. Patients with initial presence of 131Ⅰ lung uptake had higher effective rate than those with 131Ⅰ lung uptake during the second or later 131Ⅰ treatment (76% (22/29)vs33% (4/12),x2 =4.911, P=0.027). Also, significantly higher effective rate was found in patients with lung metastases alone than those with extra-pulmonary metastases (75% (24/32) vs 22% (2/9), x2 = 6. 312, P =0.012). However, the effective rate in patients with diffuse metastases was not significantly different from that in patients with focal metastases (67% (12/18)vs 61% ( 14/23), x2 =0. 146, P=0.702). The positive rate of initial 131Ⅰ uptake by lung metastases was higher in patients with total thyroidectomy than those with partial thyroidectomy (83% (24/29) vs 42% (5/12) ). Those positive rates in patients with papilary DTC and patients with follicular DTC were 72% (23/32) and 6/9, respectively. The surgical mode was correlated with the initial 131Ⅰ uptake by lung metastases (r = 0.411, P ＜ 0.05), but no correlation was found between the histological type and the initial 131Ⅰ uptake by lung metastases ( r = 0. 047, P ＞ 0.05 ). Conclusion Initial uptake of 131 Ⅰ by lung metastases alone is a favorable prognostic factor for DTC patients treated by131Ⅰ, and total thyroidectomy may be beneficial for initial 131Ⅰ uptake by lung metastases.

A system analysis about the microbial flora of normal and abnormal soybean sauce liquor from the high-salt-level watery state fermentation was made and the dominant bacteria and yeasts were identified.On the other hand,a discussion of effect of temperature on microbial flora was made.The results indicated that there were no obvious differences about the count of aerobe,spore-producing bacteria,enterobacteriaceae,lactic acid bacteria and anaerobe between the normal and abnormal soybean sauce liquor and there were marked differences about the count of yeasts and salt-tolerant bacteria.The predominant yeasts in normal soybean sauce were Torulopsis and Saccharomyces,accounting for 55.9% and 35.3% of the total yeasts separately,and in abnormal soybean sauce were Pichia,candida and Saccharomyces,accounting for 62.8%,17.9% and 9.0% respectively.

These years with industrial antiseptics and disinfectants widely used, especially unscientifically used, the resistance of microorganisms is more and more serious, which brought much more difficulties to industrial producing. The developments on the resistance of microorganisms to industrial antiseptics and disinfectants, their resistant mechanisms and the control strategies are reviewed, which aids us to reasonably use industrial organic antiseptics and disinfectants in existence and provides academic and scientific basis.

Three osmotolerant yeasts were isolated from three batches of "swollen can" soy sauce produced by a Guangdong condiment plant. These strains grew faster in the media containing 50%～60% glucose or 15% NaCl than in common yeast media. The three yeasts were identified as Pichia etchellsii by using morphological characteristics, physiological and biochemical tests.

This study is to investigate the effect of the effective components group of Xiaoshuantongluo (XECG) on neuronal injury induced by oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) in primary cortical cultures isolated from SD rat cortex at day 3 and the possible mechanism. Cells were divided into control group, OGD model group and XECG group (1, 3 and 10 mg x L(-1)). The cell viability was assessed with MTT assay and the LDH release rate was measured by enzyme label kit. The cell apoptosis was analyzed using Hoechst staining. RT-PCR was applied to detect the mRNA levels of JAK2 and STAT3. Western blotting was used to detect the expressions of Bcl-2, Bax, p-JAK2 and p-STAT3 proteins. Results showed that XECG resulted in an obvious resistance to oxygen-glucose deprivation-induced cell apoptosis and decrement of cell viability, decrease the cell LDH release rate. XECG could adjust the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax proteins and increase Bcl-2/Bax ratio, up-regulate the expression of p-JAK2 and p-STAT3. In conclusion, XECG could protect against the neuronal injury cells exposed to OGD, which may be relevant to the promotion of JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway, and impact the expression of Bax and Bcl-2.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the relationship between the expression of COX-2 and liver cancer and construct a recombinant adenovirus encoding human COX-2 antisense RNA, and then to investigate its effects on liver cancer cell proliferation.

METHODSThe expression of COX-2 in 34 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma and in SMMC-7402 and SMMC-7721 cell lines was studied by using immunohistochemical techniques. The shuttle plasmid encoding anti-sense COX-2 was constructed by using cloning COX-2 cDNA fragment in the reverse direction into the pHCMVSPIA. Then the plasmid pJM17 and the shuttle plasmid were co-transferred into 293 cells with lipofectamine for homologous recombination to acquire recombinant adenovirus (Ad-AShcox-2), which was confirmed by PCR. Human hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines SMMC-7402 and SMMC-7721 were transduced in vitro. The cell apoptosis and cell cycle were analyzed by flow cytometry. The cell proliferation was determined by colony-forming efficiency.

RESULTSWe observed COX-2 expression in 82.4% of the hepatocellular carcinomas and SMMC-7402 cell line, but no COX-2 expression in the SMMC-7721 cell line. In addition, the recombinant adenovirus encoding anti-sense COX-2 fragment Ad-AShcox-2 was obtained with a titer of 1.06 x 10(12) PFU/ml. Ad-AShcox-2 reduced the expression of COX-2 and enhanced the percentage of cells into G1/G0 phase in the SMMC-7402 cell line. The difference of apoptotic index between the Ad-AShcox-2 group and the control group was statistically significant in SMMC-7402 but not in SMMC-7721. Similarly, colony-forming rates of SMMC-7402 and SMMC-7721 cell lines after Ad-AShcox-2 being transferred were (2.7+/-0.94)% and (33.6+/-4.24)%, respectively.

CONCLUSIONBy reducing the expression of COX-2 in hepatocellular carcinoma cells with the expression of COX-2, the cells could be inhibited.
