Chinese Journal of Trauma 2010;26(9):822-825
Objective To study the therapeutic effect of vertebral pillar block insertion through vertebral pedicle in treatment of thoracolumbar vertebral fractures. Methods The study involved 23patients (25 vertebrae and 47 vertebral pillar blocks) with thoracolumbar vertebral fractures treated with vertebral pillar block insertion through vertebral pedicle in our hospital from March 2008 to July 2009.There were two patients with T11 fractures, nine with T12 fractures, seven with L1 fractures and five with L2 fractures (four patients were treated with decompression by fenestration between vertebral plates and vertebral pedicle fixation with vertebral pillar block). Surgical operation, operation duration, blood loss during operation, postoperative and follow-up X-ray films were observed, and the ratio of anterior vertebral height and normal height, degree of Cobb angle correction and early postoperative recovery were determined. Results Twenty-three patients were followed up for 7-16 months (mean 12.5 months),which showed little postoperative vertebral height loss and significantly improved postoperative anterior vertebral compression rate and the Cobb angle (P < 0. 05). Conclusions Vertebral pillar block can effectively restore the mechanical properties of vertebral bodies, reduce further loss of vertebral height, kyphosis reproduction and other complications and take advantages of shorter operative time, less bleeding, faster recovery and better adaptation to the biological fixation in treatment of thoracolumbar vertebral fractures.

3.Recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of lysosomal storage diseases
Journal of Peking University(Health Sciences) 2003;0(04):-
SUMMARY Lysosomal storage diseases are a group of genetic disorders that result from the defect in lysosomal function. Signs and symptoms are variable, it is difficult to diagnose this group of disease merely by the clinical manifestation. The diagnosis usually is made by measuring the activity of the corresponding enzyme. Gene mutational analysis is useful for the diagnosis of some of the lysosome storage diseases. The treatment has focused on the replacement of the defective enzyme responsible for the disease and the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Both of them have achieved exciting outcomes in some of the diseases.

Objective] To investigate the possible mechanism underlying the killing of Culex quinquefasciatus larvae by Lagenidium giganteum from the biochemical point of view. [Methods] The activities of alkaline phosphatase(AKP), acid phosphatase(ACP) and esterase(EST) were observed by using calcium cobalt method, lead nitrate method and naphthol method. Results were photomicrographed and analysed quantitatively by image analysis using computer. [Results] The activities of AKP and ACP were decreased while the activities of EST were increased among the infected groups with different infection intensities. [Conclusions] The changes of these enzyme activities might be one of the important mechanisms of action of Lagenidium giganteum against Culex quinquefasciafus larvae.

Journal of Shanghai Jiaotong University(Medical Science) 2009;29(10):1182-1186
Objective To investigate the oxidative mechanism of homocysteine ( Hey) -induced apoptosis in endothelial progenitor cells( EPCs). Methods Total mononuclear cells were isolated from mouse bone marrow by Ficoll density gradient centrifugation and were cultured in vitro for 7 d. Adherent cells were harvested and identified by fluorescence microscopy. EPCs were cultured with Hey (0, 50, 100 and 500 μmol/L) for 12, 24 and 48 h, or pretreated with NAC (1 mmol/L), DPI( 10 μmol/L) or SB203580 (10 μmol/L) for 30 min, then cultured with 500 μmol/L Hey for 24 h. Apoptosis was detected by Annexin-V/PI flow cytometry, levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells were measured using H2DCF-DA as a fluorescence probe, NADPH oxidases were evaluated with lucigenin-enhanced chemilumine9cence, and NO in the supernatant was determined by nitrate reductase assay. Results Hey induced EPCs apoptosis, ROS accumulation, NADPH oxidase activation and decrease of NO in a time-dose dependent manner( P <0.05 or P < 0.01). Pretreatment with NAC, DPI and SB203580 could inhibit these effects (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Conclusion Hey could activate NADPH oxidase, induce ROS increase and NO decrease, and activate p38MAPK to enhance EPCs apoptosis.
