PURPOSE: This study was aimed to identify the major factors affecting performance in health promoting behaviors in women workers at small-scale industries. METHOD: This study was based on the Pender's Health Promotion Model. The subjects for this study were 251 women workers at 23 small-scale industries in Busan city. The data for this study was collected from July 15th to August 15th 2003 by structured questionaries, and were analyzed with ANOVA, t-test, Pearson' correlation coefficient, and multiple Regression in the SPSS/WIN 10.0. RESULT: The mean performance of the health promoting behavior was 2.56. The factors related to the performance of the health promoting behaviors were social support, marital status, status of owning a house, perceived barriers to action, working time, and self-efficacy, and they explained 58.4% of the variance of the health promoting behaviors. CONCLUSION: The mean performance of the health promoting behavior seemed to be low, and the most important variable related to health promoting behaviorsof women working at a small-scale industry was social support. Therefore, intervention programs to increase the social support for women worker need to be developed.

The dizziness associated with paraneoplastic neurologic syndrome is hard to diagnose clinically because the prevalence of disease is rare, and radiologic and serologic examination result may come out normal. Opsoclonus-myoclonus symdrome is a representative of classical paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes. In this paper, we report 2 cases of paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes with negative serologic auto-antibody test and no brain lesion on MRI. Both cases were eventually diagnosed through PET. Patients with opsoclonus-myoclonus type nystagmus should be evaluated for paraneoplastic neurologic syndrome even if their radiologic and serologic findings are normal.

Background and Objectives: Some reports propose an increased risk of otitis media and hearing impairment after total laryngectomy. However, the incidence of otitis media following laryngectomy and the mechanism remain unclear. This study aimed to identify the incidence and risk factors of otitis media after total laryngectomy. Subjects and Methods: This retrospective cohort study assessed 77 patients who underwent total laryngectomy from 2010 to 2020 in a tertiary referral center. Serial imaging studies (computed tomography [CT], magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography-CT) were used to assess otitis media. Results: The study enrolled 58 patients (mean age, 67.0±7.7 years; male, 56 [96.6%]); nine (15.5%) underwent a gastrostomy tube (four preoperatively and five postoperatively). Otitis media was confirmed in seven (12.1%) patients. Gastrostomy tube insertion was the only significant risk factor for otitis media (p=0.012). Of the nine patients who underwent gastrostomy tube insertion, four developed otitis media; all four had the procedure after laryngectomy. Conclusions This study found an increased incidence of otitis media after total laryngectomy. Swallowing difficulties likely contribute to otitis media as it occurred more frequently in patients requiring postoperative gastrostomy tube insertion.

Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) is rare, but increasingly reported in the literature as a cause of lower limb arterial impairment. Management of a patient with PAES depends on the clinical pictures. Currently, myotomy of the medial head of gastrocnemius muscle with interposition grafting or bypass of diseased popliteal artery has been widely used in cases with a demaged or occluded artery. But, other less extensive therapeutic approaches were also performed instead of it. We present a case of type II popliteal entrapment syndrome in an 36-year-old male. Presenting symptom was exercise- induced pain in his right calf since one month ago. Arteriography showed occlusion in short segment of right popliteal artery and intact distal run-off arteries. After overnight urokinase thrombolysis, residual focal stenosis and medial deviation of popliteal artery were observed. CT scan showed abnormal structure between right popliteal artery and popliteal vein, so, diagnosis was established. After myotomy of the medial head of gastrocnemius muscle, the symptom resolved completely. Post-operative duplex scan showed normal blood flow, even in active plantar flexion of the foot. In our case, early diagnosis and combined approach of endovascular thrombolytic therapy followed by surgical release of popliteal artery enabled to avoid direct vascular surgery such as bypass or interposition grafting with resolution of ischemic symptoms. This thrombolytic therapy does not obviate surgery but may permit a less extensive procedure to be performed in PAES.

OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to assess the current management status of the vestibular function test laboratories in Korea. METHODS: Questionnaire about the management status of the vestibular function test laboratories was sent by email to the entire members of the Korean Balance Society. The contents of questionnaire included situation of employees who perform the tests, the types of vestibular function tests and equipment, frequency of the test and types of dizziness related questionnaires. RESULTS: Forty-nine hospitals and clinics responded. All the 49 respondents answered that they have videonystagmography. Spontaneous nystagmus analysis by videonystagmogrphy was the most frequently tests for patients with dizziness. Questionnaires for dizziness were used by 27 respondents (55.1%) for initial evaluation of the dizziness patients. The Korean version of dizziness handicap inventory was the most frequently used dizziness related questionnaire. CONCLUSIONS: We analyzed the current management status of vestibular function test laboratories to comprehend the present condition of the vestibular function test. We think that these results will help to provide a standard for laboratory operations and prepare for the education, focusing on high-demand tests.

Bochdalek hernia through Bochdalek foramen, defect at the posterolateral side of the diaphragm is one of the congenital diaphragmatic hernias. It usually occurs in infants, but very rare in old age and also on the right side. We experienced the right-side Bochdalek hernia including kidney herniation in 68 years old man man ifested by hemoptysis. CT scan revealed diaphragmatic defect and herniated liver, colon and kidney. Thoracotomy was performed and the 10 cm-sized large defect was closed with patch. After then, the patient has been well without symptom.

Fifty nine patients who had been admitted to Seoul National University Hospital from April to October in 1986 were prospectively examined by a pulsed Doppler echocardiography on one day before cardiac catheterization. The sample volume was placed both just proximal and distal to pulmonic valve on 2-D echocardiogram. 1) Among the three morphologic patterns of the flow velocity, triangular and intermediate types indicate pulmonary hypertension (sensitivity 84%, specificity 86%), and round type indicates normal pulmonary arterial pressure (sensitivity 86%, specificity 84%). 2) In the group with pulmonary hypertension acceleration time and ejection time were measured shorter (P<0.01), and prejection period was measured longer than the group without pulmonary hypertension (P<0.05). 3) The best correlation was obtained between PEP/AT and mean pulmonary arterial pressure (r=0.77). Acceleration time alone also correlated well with mean arterial pulmonary pressure(r=-0.69). 4) In STI measurement and its correlation with pulmonary arterial pressure, no significant difference was observed when recorded in main pulmonary artery or right ventricular outflow tract. But in the latter position, late, systolic fluttering and variation in curve morphology occured less likely. 5) Our results indicate that the pulsed Doppler echocardiography is useful not only in the diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension but also in the quantitative estimation of pulmonary arterial pressure in different heart diseases. Futhermore this method may be a good tool for follow-up evaluation after surgical or medical treatment of patients with pulmonary hypertension.
