ObjectiveTo investigate the neuropsychological impairments and risk factors that caused cognitive disturbance in patients with silent brain infarction (SBI). Methods36 SBI subjects and 25 normal controls were compared on a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery. Logistic regression was used to analysis the risk factors. ResultsThe SBI group scored lower on the visual retention test (VRT), the WAIS RC full scale IQ, standard scores of the perceptual organization factor and memory/attention factors than did the control group. The score of self rating depression scale (SDS) was higher in SBI group. Hypertension and leukoaraiosis (LA) were correlates of cognitive impairment in logistic regression analyses. Conclusions SBI has some degree of neuropsychological impairment, especially deficits of visuospatial ability, disturbance of perceptual organization, memory and attention, and some degree of depression. Hypertension and LA independently contribute to the risk factors of cognitive disturbance.

Objective To observe the clinical changes in resin and porcelain veneer in restoring dental fluorosis in order to provide a basis for the repair of dental fluorosis. Methods Fifty six severe dental fluorosis patients were divided into porcelain and resin teeth group in the department of Prosthetics, school of Stomatology, Harbin Medical University during 2005 to 2008. All 162 teeth of 25 patients in porcelain group were veneered with porcelain. 201 teeth of 31 patients in resin group were repaired with resin. To evaluat the clinic effect, the veneer surface color was detected by the Easyshade computer-aided colorimeter when the repair was completed and 18 months afterward. The edge of veneer adaptation, retention, secondary caries and abutment were examined after 18 months, and classified by color, shape, function and feeling. Results The color difference between the porcelain and resin teeth group was 0.27±0.20 and 0.21±0.15 when it was completed, and it was 0.28±0.21 and 0.77± 0.68 respectively after 18 months. The color difference value of the porcelain teeth group was lower when it was completed than 18 months later(t=-13.55, P<0.01). The color difference value of the resin teeth group was lower than the porcelain teeth group after 18 months(t=-12.60, P<0.01). The percentage of level A of veneer adaptation in the porcelain group[100%(162/162)] was higher than the resin group[91.04% (183/201), χ2=15.26, P< 0.01) after 18 months. The clinical effect was divided into three degrees of excellent, moderate or failed, into which the number of the teeth catergorized was 158, 4 and 0 in porcelain group, 148, 56 and 4 in resin group respectively. The clinical effect of the porcelain group was superior to the resin group(χ2=44.24, P<0.01). Conclusions The surface color of porcelain veneer last 16nger than the resin veneer, the adaptation and clinical effect is also superior to the resin veneer. But the long-term efficacy of two methods needs further study, especially of the resin veneer.

OBJECTIVE To explore the effect of connexin (Cx) 40-formed gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) on Photofrin- photodynamic therapy (PDT) phototoxicity in Cx40- transfected HeLa cells and its potential mechanisms. METHODS HeLa cell line stably transfected to express Cx40 was seeded at high and low cell density, respectively, to assess in vitro photosensitivity using CCK8 assay. Western blot assay was performed to detect the expression of Cx40. The intracellular ROS and Ca2 +concentrations were determined using flow cytometer. 4-HNE and ceramide were measured using ELISA assay. RESULTS Cx40-composed GJ formation at high density enhances the phototoxicity of Photofrin-PDT. When the Cx40 is not expressed or Cx40 channels are blocked, the phototoxicity in high-density cultures substantially reduces, indicating that the enhanced PDT phototoxicity at high density is mediated by Cx40-composed GJIC. The GJIC-mediated increase in PDT phototoxicity was associated with ROS and calcium-mediated stress signaling pathways. CONCLUSION The work uniquely presents the ability of Cx40-composed GJIC to enhance the sensitivity of malignant cells to PDT, and indicates that mainte?nance or increase of Cx40-formed GJIC may be a profitable strategy towards the enhancement of PDT therapeutic efficiency.

Background:Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a common type of hematological malignancy in elderly people.Geriatricians have developed comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) methods for elderly patients;however, the tools used for CGA in AML are not uniform. Thus,we aimed to validate the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) scales, age, comorbidities (Charlson Comorbidity Index),and albumin (IACA) index, which is a new tool for CGA,in elderly patients with AML.Methods:Patients aged ≥60 years who had been diagnosed with AML were screened for eligibility.Among the IACA low-,intermediate-,and high-risk groups, continuous variables were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test, and categorical variables were compared using x2 and Fisher exact tests. In addition, probabilities of overall survival (OS) were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Results:A total of 21,34,and 6 patients were categorized into IACA low-risk (0 point),intermediate-risk (1-2 points),and high-risk (≥3 points) groups, respectively. The rates of relapse/progression-related mortality were 23.8%,58.8%,and 100.0% in the IACA low-,intermediate-,and high-risk groups, respectively (x =12.81,P < 0.001).The 2-year probabilities of OS were 47.7% (95% confidence interval [CI] 22.8%-72.6%) and 20.2% (95% CI 5.9%-34.5%) in the IACA low-and intermediate-risk groups, respectively (x2=5.99,P =0.014),which were significantly higher than those in the high-risk group (low-risk [47.7% (95% CI 22.8%-72.6%)] vs.high-risk [0],x2=20.80,P < 0.001;intermediate-risk [20.2% (95% CI 5.9%-34.5%)] vs.high-risk [0],x2=7.56,P =0.006;respectively).In the IACA low-risk group, the 2-year probability of OS in patients receiving induction chemotherapy (50.8% [95% CI 24.1%-77.5%]) was significantly higher than that in those receiving best supportive care (0,x2=25.74,P< 0.001).Conclusion:We suggest that the IACA index might be a simple and effective tool for comprehensive geriatric assessment in elderly AML patients.
