3.Reflections on ADHD & play therapy.

In this paper, the researcher proposed to search for current research data on ADHD and play therapy. To achieve this, the researcher look into ADHD - it's definition, manifestation children, the "metaphors" used in relation to ADHD, the neurobiology of ADHD, and treatment interventions for ADHD. The researcher conducted a review of research publications for the past 10 years on ADHD and play therapy and share her clinical experience in the use of play therapy for children with ADHD. The researcher also presented the quantitative data from gathered research to assess the quality of life od several children with ADHD pre- and post-play therapy.

4.Myofunctional therapy using twin block appliance in a class II Malocclusion patient with ADHD

A 9-year-old male ADHD patient with class II dentoskeletal malocclusion came to the Pediatric Department of Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, with a chief complaint of a protrusive look. The patient had a behavior disorder of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), in which its symptoms may be challenging in dental treatment since it heavily depends on the patient’s obedience and case selection. References and similar studies of myofunctional therapy in Class II Malocclusion Patients with ADHD are still scarce. Most patients with class II malocclusion present with hyperactive perioral muscle and altered tongue position. Hence, myofunctional appliance is a reliable treatment choice. A special rule where the patient was asked to focus on the operator’s instruction for 10 minutes and then a 5-minute break, was applied to this patient to overcome ADHD symptoms as a behavior management strategy. This is in line with a theory stating that children with ADHD are prone to distraction, causing them to have a shorter duration of focus, limited sustained attention span, poor impulse control, and motor overactivity compared to normal children. This strategy gave a positive result in maintaining the cooperation of the patient using the twin block for 6 months which is lead to positive progress in malocclusion correction.

5.A controlled study of the effectiveness of EEG biofeedback training on-children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

In order to study the treatment of the children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the integrated visual and auditory continuous performance test (IVA-CPT) was clinically applied to evaluate the effectiveness of electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback training. Of all the 60 children with ADHD aged more than 6 years, the effective rate of EEG biofeedback training was 91.6% after 40 sessions of EEG biofeedback training. Before and after treatment by EEG biofeedback training, the overall indexes of IVA were significantly improved among predominately inattentive, hyperactive, and combined subtype of children with ADHD (P<0.001). It was suggested that EEG biofeedback training was an effective and vital treatment on children with ADHD.

7.Analysis of Applying Chinese Medical Clinical Pathway for Treating Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the application effect of Chinese medical clinical pathway for treating attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and to provide evidence for further improving clinical pathways.
METHODSTotally 270 ADHD children patients were recruited and treated at pediatrics clinics of 9 cooperative hospitals from December 2011 to December 2012. The treatment course for all was 3 months. Scores of attention deficit and hyperactivity rating scale, scores of behavior, Conners index of hyperactivity (CIH), and Chinese medical syndrome scores were compared between before and after treatment. The efficacy difference in various sexes, ages, and disease courses were evaluated by judging standards for Chinese medical syndrome and ADHD.
RESULTSFifteen children patients who entered clinical pathway dropped out, and the rest 255 completed this trial. Compared with before treatment, total scores of attention deficit and hyperactivity rating scale, scores of attention deficit and hyperactivity rating scale, CIH, and Chinese medical syndrome scores obviously decreased (all P < 0.01). The total effective rate in disease efficacy was 87.8% (224/255 cases), and the total effective rate in Chinese medical syndrome curative effect was 87.5% (223/255 cases). The clinical curative effect was not influenced by age, gender, or course of disease when statistically analyzed from judging standards for Chinese medical syndrome or for disease efficacy.
CONCLUSIONIntervention by Chinese medical clinical pathway could improve ADHD patients' symptoms, and its efficacy was not influenced by sex, age, or course of disease.

8.Recent research on neurodevelopmental disorders in children.

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) in children are a group of chronic developmental brain disorders caused by multiple genetic or acquired causes, including disorders of intellectual development, developmental speech or language disorders, autism spectrum disorders, developmental learning disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, tic disorders, and other neurodevelopmental disorders. With the improvement in the research level and the diagnosis and treatment techniques of NDDs, great progress has been made in the research on NDDs in children. This article reviews the research advances in NDDs, in order to further improve the breadth and depth of the understanding of NDDs in children among pediatricians.

9.Effect of combination of acupuncture and psychological intervention on attention, response inhibition and cerebral blood flow in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE:
To observe the clinical curative effect on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and explore the relevant mechanism of acupuncture in treatment.
METHODS:
A total of 100 ADHD children were randomized into an observation group (50 cases, 2 cases dropped off) and a control group (50 cases, 1 case dropped off). In the control group, the routine psychological intervention was used. In the observation group, on the base of the treatment as the control group, acupuncture was applied to Taichong (LR 3), Neiguan (PC 6), Shenmen (HT 7), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Baihui (GV 20), Sishencong (EX-HN 1), etc., once daily, for 3 months. The Cambridge neuropsychological tests automated battery (CANTAB) was adopted to evaluate attention and response inhibition in two groups before and after treatment. Digi-Lite color transcranial Doppler was used to measure cerebral arterial blood velocity. The therapeutic effect was compared between the two groups.

CONCLUSION
Acupuncture combined with psychological intervention may improve attention and response inhibition in ADHD children, which is possibly related to the regulation of cerebral blood flow.

10.Clinical Characteristics of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Childhood Malignant Hematologic Diseases.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to identify the prevalence of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among children treated for childhood malignant hematologic diseases, and determine the different characteristics of the patients with ADHD as opposed to the patients without ADHD, which will help to predict the development of ADHD and to help treat them. METHODS: 172 patients diagnosed as childhood malignant hematologic diseases went through the test battery including diagnostic criteria for ADHD in pediatric neurology department of Seoul St. Mary's hospital from March 2009 to May 2012. Age, sex, ADHD type, hematologic diseases type, age at onset of hematologic diseases, treatment with/without chemotherapy and relapse were investigated. These data were compared between the groups of the patients without ADHD and with ADHD. RESULTS: Out of 172 patients, Fifty one patients (29.6%) had both ADHD and childhood malignant hematologic diseases. Sex (male), age at onset of hematologic diseases (< or =5 years) and treatment(with chemotherapy) was significantly higher in the patients with ADHD than the patients without ADHD (P<0.05). Male had about 2.9 fold increased risk for ADHD compared to female (P=0.005). The patients < or =5 years of age at onset had about 3.3 fold increased risk for ADHD compared to the patients > or =11 years (P=0.007). The patients with chemotherapy had about 3.4 fold increased risk for ADHD compared to the patients without chemotherapy (P=0.023). CONCLUSION: This study showed childhood malignant hematologic disorders has significant correlation with ADHD. In addition, Male, < or =5 years of age at onset and use of chemotherapy in the patients can be necessary to predict ADHD. Therefore, early detection and establishment of the countermeasures for ADHD are necessary.
