OBJECTIVETo observe clinical therapeutic effect of pricking blood therapy combined with acupuncture on arthralgia syndrome.

METHODSOne hundred and ninety-two cases were randomly divided into a local pricking blood therapy combined with acupuncture group and a simple acupuncture control group, 96 cases in each group. Their therapeutic effects were compared.

RESULTSThe cured rate and the total effective rate were 83.3% and 100.0% in the treatment group and 31.0% and 87.0% in the control group with a significant difference or a very significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.05, P < 0.01); the mean times for cure in the treatment group was superior to that in the control group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONPricking blood therapy combined with acupuncture has an obvious and definite therapeutic effect on arthralgia syndrome.

Radiofrequency neurotomy of the lumbar medial branch, via a caudal approach, is a representative interventional procedure for lumbar zygapophysial joint pain, which can be performed more accurately and easily using a guide needle technique. We experienced a case of burn wound formation along the guide needle trajectory, where heat conduction through the guide needle was suggested to have resulted in the burn wound.

We report three cases of sarcoidosis with pulmonary involvement. The skin lesions showed three types of cutaneous manifestations which were erythema nodosum, pruritic maculopapular eruptions, and subcutaneous nodules respectively. Erythema nodosum in our cases accompanied by arthralgia and bilateral hilar adenopathy, so we call it Lofgrens syndrome. Histopathologic findings of the case with eythema nodosum revealed septal panniculitis and the others showed characteristic histopathologic findings of sarcoidosis so-called naked tubercle. Regressions of the skin lesions were obtained with systemic and/or topical corticosteroid therapy except for subcutaneous nodules. Subcutaneous nodules initially improved but new lesions have been found.

Heat-treated and detoxified Aconite tuber has many useful properties such as analgesic, diuretic, and cardiotonic effects. Two hundred forty-seven patients were treated with Aconite Tuber powder (1.5 - 8.0g/day) added to Kampo extract granules. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was used for the assessment of its pain-relieving effect. One hundred two patients improved dramatically (the pre/post administration VAS ratio was less than 50%), 84 improved (between 51 to 75%), and61did not improved (more than 76%). Three patients(1.2%) showed adverse reactions, such as tongue numbness, squeezing sensation of the bladder, anasarca. These reactions were not serious. This study suggests that Aconite tuber powder can be used more widely, especially for arthralgia and somatic pain with coldness in elderly patients.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a slowly progressive degenerative disorder of weight-bearing joints, mainly characterized by joint pain and functional limitation. Current pharmacological treatment of OA mainly focuses on the alleviation of symptom, with few interventions available for modifying the degeneration of cartilage. In this review, various pharmacological options would be presented with the discussion of treatment efficacy mainly regarding pain control. Evidence for some agents indicating potential prevention of disease progression would also be presented.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to examine the effects of foot reflexology on arthralgia, ankylosis, depression and sleep in community-dwelling elderly women with osteoarthritis. METHODS: The research adopted a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Participants were 47 elderly women: 22 in the experimental group and 25 in the control group. The experimental group received foot reflexology twice a week for 4 weeks. The results were analyzed using chi2-test, t-test, and ANCOVA with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. RESULTS: The results showed that foot reflexology was statistically significantly effective in reducing arthralgia, ankylosis, and depression and in improving the quality of sleep as evidenced by differences between two groups. CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicated that foot reflexology is an effective nursing intervention in reducing arthralgia, ankylosis, and depression, and improving the quality of sleep. Therefore, it is necessary to develop foot reflexology as an independent nursing intervention for elderly women with osteoarthritis in community.
