Objective To investigate the relationship between changes in Ca2+ concentration and unit discharge in the hippocampal neurons of epileptic rats. Methods Thirty-six healthy male Wistar rats were divided into three groups. Rats of the epilepsy group received an intraperitoneal injection of benzylpenicllin sodium at 6 million unit/kg; Rats of the epilepsy pretreatment group received 20 mg/kg of flunarizine at 14 and 2 hours before injection of benzylponicllin;the control group of rats received an intraperitoneal injection of normal saline.Three groups of rats were euthanized after recording of the unit discharge, and bilateral hippocampal cells were obtained to measure the cellular concentration of Ca2+ fluorescence using the new generation Ca2+ fluorescent dye Fluo-3-AM and flow cytometry. Results (1) A total of 24 units of hippocampal discharges were recorded in the control group. The average concentration Ca2+ fluorescence of the hippocampal neurons was 37.12±5.08.(2)A total of 78 units of hippocampal discharges were recorded in the epilepsy group. The average concentration of Ca2+fluorescence of the hippocampal neurons was 52.04±6.75.(3)A total of 47 units of hippocampal discharges were recorded in the epilepsy pretreatment group. The average concentration of Ca2+ fluorescence of the hippocampal neurons was 37.79±3.09.The correlation coefficient between the average concentration of Ca2+ fluorescence of the hippocampal neurons and the number of units of hippocampal discharge ( r=0.737,P<0.01).Conclusion There is a positive correlation between changes in average concentration of Ca2+ fluorescence of the hippocampal neurons and the numbers of units of hippocampal discharge.

Ongoing study on the chemical constituents of the roots of Macleaya microcarpa led to the isolation of eight compounds of derivatives of triterpenes and organic acids in addition to some previously identified benzophenanthridines. The eight compounds were identified by spectroscopic methods as well as comparison with literature values as 1-oxo-2, 22 (30)-hopandien-29-oic acid (1), 3-oxo-12-oleanen-30-oic acid (2), 3α-hydroxy-12-oleanen-30-oic acid (3), 3β-hydroxy-12-oleanen-30-oic acid (4), ferulic acid (5), ferulic acid 4-O-β-D-glucoside (6), 3-O-feruloylquinic acid (7), and methyl 3-O-feruloylquinate (8). Of which, 1 is a new triterpenoid of hopanes and 2-8 are isolated from M microcarpa for the first time. In order to discover natural active compounds as potential agents of anti-ulcerative colitis (UC), an in vitro drug high-throughput screening model targeted x-box-binding protein 1 (xbp1) was employed to evaluate the activity of the major chemical constituents of M microcarpa. The result confirmed that two dihydrobenzophenanthridines, dihydrosanguinarine (9) and dihydrochelerythrine (10), showed a certain activity on activating the transcription of xbpl, a transcription factor (TF) associated with the occurrence, development, and potential treatment of UC, with their relative activating ratios being 1.76 and 1.77 times, respectively, as compared with control group.

Objective To compare intramedullary nailing assisted by minimally invasive cerclage with simple intramedullary nailing in the treatment of femoral long oblique subtrochanteric fractures. Methods From April 2010 to September 2015,our department treated 39 patients with femoral long oblique subtrochanteric fracture.Of them,16 were treated by cephalomedullary nailing combined with minimally invasive cerclage (observation group of 11 males and 5 females with an average age of 42.8 ± 13.2 years) and 23 by simple cephalomedullary nailing (control group of 17 males and 6 females with an average age of 46.2 ± 10.1 years).Their operation time, intraoperative blood loss, radiologic results (union time and alignment) and functional results [Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Harris hip score] were compared between the 2 groups. Results The 39 patients were followed up from 12 to 30 months (average,15 months). For the observation group, the varus angle (2.2°± 1.4°) was significantly smaller than for the control group(4.1°±2.2°),the VAS scores at 1 and 3 months postoperatively (3.43 ± 1.54,1.13 ± 1.20) were significantly lower than for the control group (5.61 ± 1.41,3.34 ± 1.82),and the clinical union ratio at 3 months postoperatively(87.5%,14/16) significantly higher than for the control group (47.8%,11/23) (P < 0.05).There were no significant differences between the 2 groups in terms of operation time, intraoperative blood loss,Harris hip score at one year postoperatively,VAS score at 6 months postoperatively,or clinical union ratio at 6 or 12 months postoperatively(P > 0.05).Conclusions Cephalomedullary nailing is effective for the treatment of femoral long oblique subtrochanteric fractures no matter it is assisted by minimally invasive cerclage or not. However, since minimally invasive cerclage has the advantage of improving reduction and mechanical stability, combination of minimally invasive cerclage and cephalomedullary nailing may be more advantageous in early pain-relieving and functional recovery.

Three new lignan glucosides, baicalensinosides A-C (1-3), were isolated from the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis. The structural elucidation was achieved by in-depth spectroscopic examinations and qualitative chemical test. Structurally, these compounds belong to the 3,4-dibenzyltetrahydrofuran-type lignan glycoside with a mono-hydroxyl substitution at the 7'-position of benzylidene group on the numbering system of lignans being one of their shared critical features. The anti-osteoporotic activity of the isolated compounds was assessed in an in vitro osteoprotegerin (OPG) transcriptional activity assay using dual luciferase reporter detection. At 10 μmol/L, compounds 1-3 increased the relative activating ratio of OPG transcription to 1.83, 0.84 and 0.98 times that of the control group, respectively.
