2.Detection of Infectious Fungal Diseases of Frogs Inhabiting in Korea.

In recent years, there has been a rapid decrease in amphibian populations worldwide, and infectious diseases have been associated with this decline. Diseased frogs inhabiting Korea were collected from fields, and the diseases were identified by morphological and molecular analyses. Two fungal diseases-saprolegniasis and chromomycosis-were detected in the frogs. Saprolegniasis caused by Saprolegnia spp. was found in Rana plancyi chosenica from Gangwon-do and Rana huanrenensis from Chungbuk. Chromomycosis, which is caused by infection with Cladosporium cladosporioides, was detected in Rana catesbeiana from Busan.

3.Two Children with Nontyphoidal Salmonellosis Assumed by Pets.

Nontyphoidal Salmonella are gram negative bacilli organism, which may induce systemic infection such as febrile enteritis, bacteremia, and osteomyelitis. Main route of infection is known as food but also possible through reptile, amphibian, and fish raised as pets in the house. There is no known cases report of Salmonella infection through pets in Korea and also rare in the overseas. We report 2 patients who visited Severance children's hospital with chief complaint of fever and diagnosed as nontyphoidal salmonellosis. Each case had a history of raising turtle or tropical fish with possibility of Salmonella infection through these pets. Increasing incidence of raising pet reptile and fish lately, contact precaution and proper prevention and control of Salmonella infection of these pets especially in children under 5 years old are necessary due to higher risk of serious complications of salmonellosis.

4.Food-borne Parasitic Diseases.
Journal of the Korean Medical Association 2004;47(6):496-507
This article briefly reviews parasites transmitted by food materials and their diseases in Korea. They are taxonomically classified into 31 species of helminths, which include nematodes(6 species), trematodes(20), cestodes(6), and 1 species of protozoan. The food materials serving as the source of human infections are fishes, snails, crustacea, amphibia, reptiles, and mammals. These parasites include those that have been veiled by the previously common and well-known parasites such as Ascaris and Trichuris, and those that have been newly identified as human-infecting parasites. For prevention of these infections, avoidance of raw or improperly cooked foods is the most important strategy.

6.A Case of Peritoneal Dialysis-related Peritonitis Caused by Aeromonas Hydrophila in the Patient Receiving Automated Peritoneal Dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis is a major cause of injury and technique failure in patients undergoing PD. Aeromonas hydrophila is ubiquitous in the environment, and is a Gram-negative rod associated with infections in fish and amphibians in most cases; however, it can also cause opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. We report a case of A. hydrophila peritonitis in a 56-year-old male on automated PD. Peritonitis may have been caused by contamination of the Set Plus, a component of the automated peritoneal dialysis device. Although Set Plus is disposable, the patient reused the product by cleansing with tap water. He was successfully treated with intraperitoneally-administered ceftazidime and has been well without recurrence for more than 2 years.
