OBJECTIVETo observe the effects of Salvia miltiorrhiza (SM) on levels of neuropeptide Y1-36 and calcitonin gene-related peptide immune reactive substances (ir-NPY, ir-CGRP) in blood plasma and pons-oblongata after hypoxia-ischemic brain injury (HIBI) in neonatal rats.
METHODSSeven-day old rats were randomized into HIBI group (A), HIBI + SM group (B) and sham operation group(C). And each group was subdivided into 4 subgroups according to the different time after operation. 0.5 ml SM was injected intraperitoneally immediately and every 12 hrs afterwards. Changes of ir-NPY and ir-CGRP levels in plasma and pons-oblongata were observed immediately and 12, 24 and 48 hrs after HIBI by radioimmunoassay.
RESULTSPlasma levels of ir-NPY and ir-CGRP in different times after HIBI were all significantly raised but those in pons-oblongata were either raised or lowered to a certain degree. Part of the elevated ir-NPY could be reversed by SM injection.
CONCLUSIONCentral and peripheral neuropeptide Y1-36 and calcitonin gene-related peptide take part in the pathophysiological process of HIBI, SM could partially reverse the abnormal post-HIBI elevation of ir-NPY, which may be one of the pathways of SM in promoting recovery of damaged brain function.

Objective To investigate the diagnosis and treatment of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) in abdominal cavity. Methods The clinical manifestations, imaging examination, pathology, methodology, effect of treatment and prognosis of 28 MFH patients were retrospectively analyzed. Results Tumors were in the retroperitoneal space in 17 cases, within abdominal cavity in 6, in mesentery in 3 cases, and in the abdominal wall in 2 cases. The clinical symptoms were body weight loss, abdominal pain and mass. B ultrasonography and CT scanning showed mass in the abdomen. 24 cases were with multiplefoci,4 cases were with a single mass. Seventeen cases underwent complete tumor resection,11 cases with partial resection, 16 cases received postoperative chemotherapy and 14 cases with postoperative radiotherapy. The overall survival rate of 1-, 3- and 5- year was 76.9%,26.9% and 3.9%,respectively. Conclusion MFH is most often located in retroperitoneal space, surgical resection was the treatment of choice. The prognosis in patients with MFH might be improved by complete resection combined with chemotherapy or/ and radiotherapy.

OBJECTIVETo investigate whether insulin resistance exists in patients with colorectal cancer and its clinical significance.
METHODSA total of 135 patients with colorectal cancer were included as the study group, and 120 healthy subjects were included as the control group. Height, weight, and blood pressure were recorded. Fasting plasma glucose, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and insulin were measured. Insulin resistance index(lnHOMA-IR) was calculated.
RESULTSThe lnHOMA-IR was 0.84±0.38 in the study group and 0.42±0.08 in the control group(P<0.05). The incidence of metabolic syndrome was 34.1%(46/135) in the study group and 22.5%(27/120) in the control group(P<0.05). Insulin resistance index did not differ between the groups according to metabolic syndrome(0.98±0.41 vs. 0.74±0.22, P>0.05). There were no significant associations between insulin resistance index and tumor differentiation, depth of invasion, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, and TNM staging(P>0.05).
CONCLUSIONInsulin resistance exists in colorectal cancer patients, and it is possibly associated with metabolic syndrome and the tumor.

OBJECTIVETo develop the first grade standard analytical reference material of bovine blood lead.
METHODSAccording to standards and technology specification of primary standard reference material (JJG1006-1994), ISO 17511, and volume-effect relationship, a bovine blood lead model was developed by adding acetate lead in the feed in dose of 2-5 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1). Cow blood was collected when blood lead concentration went up to low, medium and high concentration range (90-100, 190-200, 280-300 microg/L). Blood sample was kept in tube and frozen after irradiation. The samples were tested for homogeneity and stability. ID-MS method was used to measure the lead concentration through comparison with two standard lead samples from the USA NIST SRM 955b.
RESULTSSamples of the three lead concentrations showed uniformity by single factor analysis of variance (F = 0.61, 1.64, 0.28, respectively, P > 0.05) . After 14 months monitoring, the RSD was 0.85%, 1.05% and 0.49% (t = 0.787, 1.132, 0.854, respectively, P > 0.05). The characteristic and indefinite values were 102.4 +/- 5.5; 181.2 +/- 4.0; 304.5 +/- 3.9, respectively (unit: microg/L). The reproduction of the two USA NIST SRM 955b samples further showed our methods and procedures were correct. Our sample was stabile for four days at room temperature.
CONCLUSIONThe standard reference material of bovine in our research had reached the national standard material requirements.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the relationship between hypertriglyceridemic waist to height ratio phenotype (HWHtR) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in a community population in South China.
METHODSA cross sectional study was conducted among 2142 residents in Zhuhai (Guangdong Province, China) from June to October of 2012. The HWHtR phenotype was defined as a waist to height ratio(WHtR) ≥0.55 and triglyceride level ≥2.0 mmol/L, based on which the participants were divided into HWHtR group and nonHWHtR group. CKD was defined as an eGFR<60 mL/min per 1.73 m2 or an ACR ≥30 mg/g. A logistic regression model was established to investigate the relationship between chronic kidney disease and HWHtR phenotype.
RESULTSCompared with the nonHWHtR group, the HWHtR group had a higher prevalence of chronic kidney disease (11.1% vs 33%, P<0.001). Analysis using the logistic regression model showed that HWHtR was significantly associated with CKD in the unadjusted analyses (OR=3.23, 95% CI: 2.32-4.48, P<0.001). After adjustment for age, sex, history of hypertension, history of diabetes, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, drinking, physical exercise, education and current smoking, HWHtR was significantly associated with CKD (OR=2.36, 95% CI: 1.52-3.67, P<0.001); the association of HWHtR and CKD was still significant after further adjustment for BMI (OR=2.12, 95%CI: 1.34-3.35, P<0.001).
CONCLUSIONOur finding suggests that HWHtR is associated with CKD in this community population.
