Neural stem cells are a category of cells with self-renewal and differentiation potential. Proliferation and differentiation of neural stem cells have closely relation with growth factor, cell factor, environmental signal, and so on. In recent years, evidence indicates that neural stem cells possessing multipotency naturally occur in adult brain. The found of adult neural stem cells have changed the theory that central nervous system cannot regenerative. Chinese Traditional Medicine can effectively induce adult neural stem cells to proliferate and differentiate, opening up unprecedented direction in the research for the treatment of nerve regeneration, and showing great potency for curing cerebral ischemic injury.

Abatract:Objective To study the relationship of the processes of chronic hepatitis B infection with the degree of depression and the level of serum Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).Methods 126 patients with different processes of CHB infection were divided into 3 groups, which were asymptomatic HBV carriers (ASC group),liver cirrhosis (LC group)and hepatic cell carcinoma (HCC group).40 healthy volunteers were selected as normal control.Questionnaire was used to study demographic data and the degree of depression was assessed by using Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17).The levels of the serum BDNF were detected by ELISA.Results The ratio of divorced or widowed in LC and HCC groups was higher than that of the control (χ2 = 6.354,11.972;P < 0.01).Severity of depression in ASC,LC and HCC groups was higher than that of the control (χ2 = 16.151,42.150,49.636;P <0.01).Severity of depression in ASC and LC group was lower than that of HCC group (χ2 = 14.345,28.772;P <0.01).The role of BDNF (x ±s,ng/ml)in ASC,LC,HCC and control group were 11.10±3.26,8.66 ± 3.11,7.39 ±2.52 and 12.18±2.59.The levels of serum BDNF in LC and HCC group was lower than ASC group and the control (P <0.01).The process of CHB infection had positive correlation with the score of HAMD (r=0.719,P <0.01),but had negative correlation with thelevels of serum BDNF (r=-0.504,P <0.01). There was negative correlation relationship between the score of HAMD and the levels of serum BDNF (r=-0.526,P <0.01).Conclusion The process of CHB infection can obviously aggravate the degree of depression, and reduce the levels of BDNF gradually. The levels of serum BDNF can be suggested as a psychological laboratory reference basis for the CHB pa-tients with depression. It is expected to improve the level of clinical diagnosis and treatment in CHB with depression.

A UPLC method has been developed in the current investigation for simultaneous determination of nine chemical markers of Bletilla striata, 4-hydroxymethylphenyl beta-D-glucoside, blestroside, dactylorhin A, militarine, dihydrophenanthrene 5, gymnoside V, dihydrophenanthrene 1, benzylphenanthrene 3 and gymnosides IX. Separation was performed at 45 degrees C on an ACQUITY UPLC BEH C18 column (2.1 mm x 150 mm, 1.7 microm) with a gradient solvent system of acetonitrile-water as the mobile phase. The flow rate was 0.3 mL x min(-1), the detection wavelength was 280 nm. The results showed that the nine chemical markers could be well resolved and that in the selected linear range, all calibration curves of the nine chemical markers showed good linearity (r > or = 0.999 3). The recoveries (n = 6) were in the range of 98.15% - 102.2% and RSDs were between 2.1% - 3.6%. The data suggested that the developed UPLC-UV method had good reproducibility, robustness, and accuracy, which was suitable for the quality control of Bletilla striata. Applications of the method showed that the nine chemical markers had higher contents in the wild B. striata than in the cultivated ones.

Objective To investigate the effects of morroniside on activation of caspase-3 in rats with focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion. MethodsThe model was induced with occlusion of middle cerebral artery with suture embolus, ischemia for 30 min, and reperfusion for 72 h in rats. Vitamin E used for the positive control. The activity of caspase-3 was detected with spectrophotometry. ResultsCompared with sham group, the caspase-3 activity increased obviously in model rat. Compared with model group, Morroniside (30 mg/kg,90 mg/kg,270 mg/kg) decreased the activation of caspase-3 remarkably, which was dose-dependent (P<0.05). ConclusionMorroniside may reduce apoptosis by decreasing the activation of caspase-3 in rats.
